History

Sitananda College emerged through the collaborative efforts of the local community in Nandigram following independence. It stemmed from the collective desire for higher education accessible to all, regardless of social or religious background. Spearheaded by visionary individuals such as Dr. Prabodh Kumar Bhowmick, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, and Bhopal Chandra Panda, the college was founded with generous donations from both affluent and ordinary citizens. With contributions of funds, land, and labor, the college became a reality on July 21, 1960, initially affiliated with Calcutta University and later with Vidyasagar University from 1985. The name 'SITANANDA' was derived from the initials of the two principal donors, Sitanath Pal and Ananda Mohan Maity.

Commencing with Arts and Science faculties, Sitananda College progressively broadened its academic spectrum. In 1966, it introduced Bengali Honours, followed by Mathematics and Political Science in 1970. The institution later incorporated Honours courses in Anthropology, Zoology, History, English, Sanskrit, alongside General Courses spanning Education, Philosophy, and more. Notably, its Anthropology Department, established at inception, marked a significant milestone as the second undergraduate department of its kind in West Bengal. Further enriching its offerings, Education and Chemistry Honours were integrated in the 2006-2007 session, with Physics Honours following suit in 2008-2009. [3]
