Sivasailam (Sivasaailam per the Indian census) [1] is a village located on the bank of River Gadananathi River in Tenkasi taluk, Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu, India. [2] The census village code is 642940. [1] The postal code is 627412. [3] The spoken language in this area is Tamil.
The place is greenish even during the summer months. During the month of Chitirai (mid April) to Puratasi (mid October) wind from the mountains blows gently and rain sprinkles and makes the place cool.
Within the village, there is an ancient Shiva temple named Sivasailanathar Temple. The main God of the temple is Sivasailanathar (a form of God Shiva) and his consort is Goddess Paramakalyani Amman, a form of Goddess Parvathi Amma. The temple is located on the bank of River Gadananathi River (Karunai River). The village is surrounded by Velli malai, Mulli malai and Podhigai hills, and these hills and the hill-forests are the special places of the God and Goddess.
This temple was built by pandya king. [4] It is confirmed by many sources including stone inscriptions. There are many stone inscriptions inside and near the temple and all are written in "Old Tamil." In the year 1916, a new Stone Inscription was found in Kizha Ambur. It is Stone Inscription no.518 and tells about King Ravivarman. Another inscription of Sivasailam Temple (Stone Inscription no.519) was found in Poovankurichi lake in 1916. The Stone Inscription tells that the Jamindars of Ambur, Alwarkurichi, Kadayam, Krishnapuram and Poovankurichi are responsible for collecting the tax from people and giving to the temple. The inscription says that these villages are the property of the God and the temple and the Jamindars will give the collected tax to the temple.
The Thamirabarani or Tamraparni or Porunai is a perennial river that originates from the Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats, above Papanasam in the Ambasamudram taluk. It flows through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts of the Tamil Nadu state of southern India into the Gulf of Mannar. It was called the Tamraparni River in the pre-classical period, a name it lent to the island of Sri Lanka. The old Tamil name of the river is Porunai. From the source to sea, the river is about 128 kilometres (80 mi) long and is the only perennial river in Tamil Nadu. This river flows towards north direction initially. However, it changes to east direction later.

Sivasailanathar Paramakalyani Amman Kovil, popularly known as Sivasailam Temple, is a Hindu temple in Sivasailam village of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 3 miles from Alwarkurichi in Tenkasi District. It is "an old Siva temple of large size, well sculptured and containing inscriptions." Sivasailam is surrounded by Velli Malai, Western Ghats and Mulli Malai, and is located beside the Gadananathi River. It is one of the shrines of the Vaippu Sthalams.
Tenkasi Pandyas were the Pandya kings from Sadaavarman Parakrama Pandya to his successors who ruled with Tenkasi as their capital. With the invasion of the Sultanates, Vijayanagaras, and Nayakars from the fourteenth century onwards, the Pandyas lost their traditional capital of Madurai and shifted to cities like Tenkasi and Tirunelveli. Tenkasi was the last capital of the Pandyas. All the Pandyas from Sadaavarman Parakrama Pandya and his next generations were crowned in the Adheenam Mutt in Kasi Viswanathar temple. During the same period, some Pandyas ruled with Tirunelveli as their capital. Kayatharu, Vadakkuvalliyur, and Ukkirankottai are some of their major cities. Inscriptions on them are found in Tenkasi's Kasi Viswanathar temple, Brahmadesam, Cheranmadevi, Ambasamudram, Kalakkad and Pudukkottai. The last Pandyan king to be known in the history of the Pandyas was Kolakonda, who was also among the Tenkasi Pandyas.
