Fort Worth is the 5th-most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas and the 13th-most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Tarrant County, covering nearly 350 square miles (910 km2) into four other counties: Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise. According to a 2022 United States census estimate, Fort Worth's population was 956,709. Fort Worth is the second-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, which is the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the United States, and the most populous in Texas.

The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition took place in Fort Worth, Texas from May 22 to June 7, 2009. The competitors were selected by a screening jury during screening auditions that took place in January and February 2009. The Takács Quartet performed with the semifinalists, while the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Conlon accompanied the finalists.
Gordon William Smith (1920–2010) was an artist and collector of American Indian art and ethnographic materials who lived in and was a native of Fort Worth, Texas. His collection of American Indian art, which was featured between August 2008 and August 2009 in a special exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science entitled Quest for High Bear: A Boy’s Odyssey Through Indian Country 1925-1939, and has been display at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History since November 2009, was acquired by the Houston Museum of Natural Science in 2009. Gordon W. Smith was also a publisher, and was an officer in the US Navy during World War II. He died on March 4, 2010, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Zhang Haochen is a Chinese pianist. He was a Gold Medalist of the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, becoming one of the youngest winners in the history of the competition. Zhang received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2017.
The Leventritt Competition was a highly prestigious international competition for classical pianists and violinists. It was founded in 1939 by the Edgar M. Leventritt Foundation Inc. of Cold Spring, New York, in memory of jurist Edgar M. Leventritt. The Leventritt Competition has now been discontinued.

Soviet pianist Alexei Sultanov won the competition, while José Carlos Cocarelli (Brazil) and Benedetto Lupo (Italy) were awarded the silver and bronze medals. Sultanov was 19 years old at the time. Alexander Shtarkman (USSR), Tian Ying (China), and Elisso Bolkvadze (USSR) were the 4th, 5th, and 6th place winners respectively.
