The Russia national rugby union team, nicknamed Medvedi, represented Russia in men's international rugby union international competitions. The team is administered by the Rugby Union of Russia (RUR). The RUR is considered the official successor union of the Soviet Union by World Rugby and the combined CIS team which played in the early 1990s. Since 1992, the team has played as Russia. Its first test match as Russia was against the Barbarians in Moscow in June 1992 and the country's first test against an official Test nation was against Belgium later that same year.

Rugby union in Russia is a moderately popular sport. Russia was in 2011 ranked 20th worldwide by the World Rugby, having over three hundred clubs and close to 22,000 players nationally. Russian Rugby Championship is the top-level professional competition held in Russia. Krasnoyarsk, in the middle of Siberia, is traditionally the heartland of Russian rugby.

Marat Akbarov is a former competitive pair skater for the Soviet Union. With Veronica Pershina, he is the 1985 European bronze medalist and 1979 World Junior champion.


Andrey Ivanovich Dumalkin is a Russian former rugby league footballer who played as a second-row for RC Lokomotiv Moscow in the Championship of Russia competition. He is the current coach of the Russia national beach rugby team and coach of SSHOR No. 111, He previously coached RC Zelenograd and is a Master of Sports of Russia.

Viktor Valeryevich Nechaev is a Russian rugby league footballer and rugby union coach, who played for RC Lokomotiv Moscow in the Championship of Russia competition. He is the coach of the Olymp club and of the Youth Sports School of Lokomotiv.

Igor Anatolyevich Gavrilin is a Russian rugby league footballer and rugby union coach who plays as centre. He is currently the acting coach of the Adrenalin rugby union club from Tyumen and head coach of the Tyumen region Rugby Union.

The VVA-Podmoskovye is a Russian rugby union team playing in the Professional Rugby League. The team plays at Gagarin Air Force Academy stadium in Monino, a garrison town just outside Moscow. VVA-Podmoskovye have strong links to the air force and also supplied the bulk of Russia, with which they shared a head coach, Nikolai Nerush. The team had ambitious plans for the future - it lobbied hard for inclusion in the European Challenge Cup and was close to completing a 12,500-seat purpose-built rugby stadium.

Rugby union in the Soviet Union was a moderately popular sport. It was most popular in the Georgian SSR; parts of the Russian SFSR such as Moscow and certain regions in Siberia like Krasnoyarsk; and Alma-Ata, the capital of the Kazakh SSR. Rugby enjoyed a more limited popularity in the Ukrainian SSR, Minsk in the Byelorussian SSR and parts of the RSFSR such as Leningrad and areas in Southern Russia, including Krasnodar. Rugby gained a significant following due to the vast size of the Soviet Union, but was never a major sport; despite many attempts to develop the sport, which Soviet citizens came to nickname the "leather melon" due to the shape of the ball. Still, an early championship in 1960 gives an idea of the sheer scale of Soviet rugby: one hundred teams from over thirty cities took part.

Yenisey-STM Rugby Club is a Russian rugby union club founded in 1975. It is one of the two powerful Krasnoyarsk clubs, the other being their cross town rivals Krasny Yar. They participate in the Professional Rugby League, the premier rugby championship of Russia, and in 2015–16 qualified for the European Rugby Challenge Cup, making them the first Russian rugby union club ever to compete in a major European club competition. With an operating budget of €3.5m they are largest club in Russia.

Evgeny Isayevich Klebanov, known also as Eugene Klebanov, is a Russian former rugby union player, league coach, Master of Sports of the USSR, Merited Coach of Russia in rugby, five-times winner of the Moscow rugby championship and runner-up at the USSR rugby championship in 1990. He has coached for a long time Russia at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 European Nations Cups and other international tournaments. Klebanov also trained over 100 Masters of Sports of the USSR and Russia. Currently he is the head coach of the National Rosbol Federation of Russia and the Superball Academy.
