Eyer L. "Slonnie" Sloniger was the first chief pilot and holder of pilot seniority #1 at American Airlines. He later became chief pilot and director of flight operations at Matson Airlines.
Eyir Sloniger was born to Commodore and Margaret Sloniger on July 28, 1896, on a farm outside of Moorefield, Nebraska. (Commodore was a birth name, not a rank) Eyir was the middle child of nine siblings, six boys and three girls. [1] Eyir was not given a middle name at birth, but liked the sound of "E.L." and decided to use the initial "L" as his middle name. [1] The Sloniger's moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Sloniger became an Eagle Scout, finished high school, and enrolled at the University of Nebraska. [1] World War I broke out while Sloniger was attending college, impelling him to drop out of school and join the war effort. The Army misspelled his name as "Eyer", which led to the final iteration of his name "Eyer L. Sloniger". [1]
Sloniger joined the United States Army Air Service on November 7, 1917 [2] and was sent to the University of California, Berkeley for officers training. He was then assigned to the 110th Aero Squadron at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas for his flight training. After earning his wings, he was shipped out to the Issoudun Aerodrome in France where he flew Nieuport [3] and SPAD [4] pursuit planes. Sloniger was learning to fly his assigned patrol route with instructors when the war ended. [1] He was four days shy of being sent to the front. [1] Sloniger was released from active duty on February 9, 1919. [2]
After the war, Sloniger returned to Lincoln and purchased a surplus Jenny airplane. Sloniger would give airplane rides, put on aerobatic shows, and give flight instruction in order to help finish college. [1] Lincoln businessman Ray Page, owner of the Lincoln-Page Aircraft Company, operated a flying circus named "Page's Ariel Pageant". Sloniger was one of the headline acts with his aerobatic routine. [5] He then spent time flying the Tampico Oil Company payroll, in the form of cash and gold bars, from the US to Mexico. [1] In 1925, Sloniger flew for the short lived "Kansas City to Wichita Airlines".
In 1927, Sloniger was hired at Robertson Aircraft Corporation flying the CAM 2 mail route from St. Louis - Peoria - Springfield and back. Charles Lindbergh was a pilot for Robertson prior to his famous New York to Paris non-stop flight and considered Sloniger as one of his favorite fellow airmail pilots. [6] Lindbergh was also a member of Sloniger's old squadron, the renamed 110th Observation Squadron now based in St Louis, Missouri.
When American Airlines was created in 1930, it was done so by consolidating many smaller airlines. One of those airlines was Robertson where Sloniger was the senior pilot. When American created their combined pilot seniority list, Sloniger came out as pilot #1. This earned him the nickname of " Old number one". [4] [7] The Air Mail scandal of 1934 mandated that the airlines reorganize into new, more efficient organizations, which led to Sloniger being named American's first chief pilot. [1]
During World War II, many pilots and aircraft from American Airlines were absorbed into the Air Transport Command of the United States Army Air Forces to assist with the war effort. Before the war, American had been a domestic airline only, and Sloniger volunteered for the chance to fly international flights to Europe. He made 88 Atlantic crossings during the war. [5] After the war ended, American returned to its pre-war route structure of domestic flights only. [6]
Matson Navigation Company decided to start up a luxury airline serving Hawaii in an attempt to break up Pan Am's international route monopoly. Matson offered Sloniger the job of chief pilot and director of operation for the new airline. Intrigued by the opportunity to fly international routes again, Sloniger resigned from American and took the job at Matson. Fellow American pilot and author, Ernest Gann joined him at Matson. Gann wrote about their maiden flight to Honolulu in his memoir Fate is the Hunter with, "My respect for Sloniger was enormous and so I had no objection whatsoever to flying as his co-pilot." [7] Matson eventually ceased operations and Sloniger spent time working for Transocean Airlines and Cal Eastern Airlines before retiring from the airline industry in 1955. [8]
Sloniger spent the last 25 years of his life living in the San Francisco Bay Area, first in Walnut Creek and then San Mateo. [8] He was a member of the American Airlines retired pilots group the Grey Eagles and the Quiet Birdmen. [8] He enjoyed gardening and growing orchids during his retirement. [1] Sloniger died at home on August 15, 1969, at the age of 73. Sloniger was inducted into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame in 2017. [4]
Charles Augustus Lindbergh was an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist. At the age of 25, he achieved instant world fame by making the first nonstop flight from New York City to Paris on May 20–21, 1927. Lindbergh covered the 33+1⁄2-hour, 3,600-statute-mile (5,800 km) flight alone in a purpose-built, single-engine Ryan monoplane, the Spirit of St. Louis. Though the first non-stop transatlantic flight had been completed eight years earlier, this was the first solo transatlantic flight, the first transatlantic flight between two major city hubs, and the longest transatlantic flight by almost 2,000 miles. It was one of the most consequential flights in aviation history and ushered in a new era of transportation between parts of the globe.
Barnstorming was a form of entertainment in which stunt pilots performed tricks individually or in groups that were called flying circuses. Devised to "impress people with the skill of pilots and the sturdiness of planes," it became popular in the United States during the Roaring Twenties.

Clyde Edward Pangborn, nicknamed "Upside-Down Pangborn", was an American aviator and barnstormer who performed aerial stunts in the 1920s for the Gates Flying Circus. He was its half-owner, chief pilot and operating manager, working in partnership with Ivan R. Gates. In 1931, Pangborn and co-pilot Hugh Herndon Jr. flew their plane, Miss Veedol, on the first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean.
Ernest Kellogg Gann was an American aviator, author, sailor, and conservationist. He is best known for his novels and memoirs about early aviation and nautical adventures. Some of his more famous aviation novels include The High and the Mighty and Island in the Sky, both of which were turned into Hollywood movies starring John Wayne. Gann's classic memoir of early commercial aviation, Fate Is the Hunter, is still in print today and considered by many one of the greatest aviation books ever written. Some of Gann's nautical-themed novels include Fiddler's Green and Soldier of Fortune, which were also turned into major motion pictures.

It describes his years working as a pilot from the 1930s to 1950s, starting at American Airlines in Douglas DC-2s and DC-3s when civilian air transport was in its infancy, moving onto wartime flying in C-54s, C-87s, and Lockheed Lodestars, and finally at Matson Navigation's short-lived upstart airline and various post-World War II "nonscheduled" airlines in Douglas DC-4s.

Otto William Timm was a California-based barnstormer and aircraft manufacturer of German descent. Charles Lindbergh's first flight was flown by Timm. Timm partnered at times with his brother Wally Timm who did a lot of flying for the nascent Hollywood movie industry.
Sean Doherty Tucker is an American world champion aerobatic aviator. He was previously sponsored by the Oracle Corporation for many years, performing in air shows worldwide as "Team Oracle". Tucker has won numerous air show championship competitions throughout his career, was named one of the 25 "Living Legends of Flight" by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in 2003, and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2008. He has led several efforts to assist youth in learning to fly or becoming involved in general aviation, and currently serves as co-chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)'s Young Eagles program, a role he has held since 2013.

Thomas Paul Poberezny was an American aerobatic world champion, as well as chairman of the annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Fly-In and Convention from 1977 to 2011 and president of EAA from 1989 to 2010, presiding over a time period of expansive growth for the organization and convention. He succeeded his father, Paul Poberezny, who founded them in 1953.
Stout Metal Airplane Division of the Ford Motor Company was an American aircraft manufacturer founded by William Bushnell Stout as the Stout Metal Airplane Co. in 1922. The company was purchased by Ford Motor Company in 1924 and later produced the Ford Trimotor. At the height of the Great Depression, Ford closed the aircraft design and production division in 1936, temporarily re-entering the aviation market with the production of the B-24, at the Willow Run aircraft factory during World War II.
James Herbert "Jack" Knight was an American pilot who made the first overnight transcontinental air mail delivery. Knight was part of an airmail relay team that flew 2,629 miles across the United States on February 22–23, 1921 in an effort to show that the airmail service was much faster than the railroads. When all the other pilots were weathered-in or broken-down, Knight flew extra relay sections through the night in snow and fog and is credited with saving the airmail service from political decommission. "Jack Knight's Night Flight" made him the most famous pilot in America in the era prior to Charles Lindbergh.
Harold Ross Harris was a notable American test pilot and U.S. Army Air Force officer who held 26 flying records. He made the first flight by American pilots over the Alps from Italy to France, successfully tested the world's first pressurized aircraft, was the first airman to safely escape from an aircraft by "bailing out" using a free-fall parachute. In his civilian career he helped create the first aerial application "crop dusting" business, and later retired as vice-president of Pan American Airways.
Robertson Aircraft Corporation was a post-World War I American aviation service company based at the Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field near St. Louis, Missouri, that flew passengers and U.S. Air Mail, gave flying lessons, and performed exhibition flights. It also modified, re-manufactured, and resold surplus military aircraft including Standard J, Curtiss Jenny/Canuck, DeHavilland DH-4, Curtiss Oriole, Spad, Waco, and Travel Air types in addition to Curtiss OX-5 engines.
Major William Bryan Robertson was an American aviator and aviation executive who was the co-founder of Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field as well as the owner and President of Robertson Aircraft Corporation (RAC) located there, a company which he had co-founded with his brother, Frank, in 1918.
Blaze of Noon is a 1947 aviation adventure film directed by John Farrow and based on writer and aviator Ernest K. Gann's best-selling novel Blaze of Noon (1946), a story about early air mail operations. The screenplay was from well-known writer and aviator Frank "Spig" Wead and Arthur Sheekman and starred Anne Baxter, William Holden, Sonny Tufts and William Bendix.
