Soban Singh Jeena University (SSJ University) is a state university [1] situated at Almora, Uttarakhand, India. The University was established in 2020 under the Soban Singh Jeena University Act, 2019 (Uttrakhand Act No. 19 of 2020), [2] which was approved by the cabinet of Uttarakhand in October 2019. [3] The university started operation in August 2020 [4] when Prof. Narendra Singh Bhandari, the founder Vice-Chancellor of the university, assumed his position. [5]

The University has three campuses affiliated to it :-

  1. Soban Singh Jeena Campus, Almora
  2. Laxman Singh Mahar Campus, Pithoragarh
  3. Pt. Badri Dutt Pandey Campus, Bageshwar [6]

Both the Pithoragarh and Bageshwar campuses were established in 2020 with the separation of SSJ University from Kumaun University.

He also served as 2nd Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002 and thereafter, was the leader of the opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2003. He also served as an MLC in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and MLA in Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. He later served as an MP in Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014 from Uttarakhand and then the MP in the 16th Lok Sabha from Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar constituency, earning him the distinction of being elected in both houses of State Legislature and both houses of National Parliament respectively.

The college established by the Government of Uttarakhand and Uttarakhand Technical University has been reconstituted as a Campus Institute of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University Dehradun with effect from 9th May 2023.

National Highway 309A, commonly referred to as NH 309A, is a single lane highway connecting the city of Rameshwar to Almora in the Indian State of Uttarakhand. Before the creation of Uttarakhand state in 2000, the Almora-Bageshwar stretch of this Highway was a part of the State Highway 37 of Uttar Pradesh, which ran from Bageshwar to Bareilly.

The Sarju, also known as Sarayu, is a major river draining Central Kumaon region in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Originating from Sarmul, Sarju flows through the cities of Kapkot, Bageshwar and Seraghat before joining Mahakali at Pancheshwar. The Sarju is the largest tributary of the Sharda River. The river forms the South-eastern border between the districts of Pithoragarh and Almora. Temperate and sub-Tropical forests cover the entire Catchment area of the River.
