The Society for Financial Studies (SFS) is a nonprofit, academic society in the field of finance. It owns and runs three academic journals: (1) the Review of Financial Studies, (2) the Review of Asset Pricing Studies, and (3) the Review of Corporate Finance Studies. It organizes the SFS Cavalcade North America and the SFS Cavalcade Asia-Pacific, which are annual academic conferences. It financially supports and co-sponsors many independent finance academic conferences. [1] [2] Its governing board is the SFS Council.
The Society for Financial Studies was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in California in 1987. [3] Its initial purpose was to own and run a new academic journal, which was called the Review of Financial Studies (RFS). The founding officers of SFS were Joseph Williams (President), George Constantinides (Vice President), and Mark Weinstein (Secretary/Treasurer). [4] The founding editor of the Review of Financial Studies was Michael Brennan. The founding publisher was Oxford University Press, which has continued to publish RFS up to the present day. [5]
The Review of Financial Studies is an academic journal that covers the field of finance. It began publication in 1988 with 18 regular research articles spread out over 4 quarterly issues. In 2019, it published 123 regular research articles spread out over 12 monthly issues. According to Journal Citation Reports, it has a 2019 citation impact factor of 4.975. The Review of Asset Pricing Studies is an academic journal that covers the finance sub-field of asset pricing. It began publication in 2011. It is published by Oxford University Press. [14] In 2019, it published 10 articles in two issues. It has an unofficial citation impact factor of 1.063 [15] based on the same methodology as Journal Citation Reports. [16] The current editorial team is Jeffrey Pontiff [17] (Executive Editor), Hui Chen, Nikolai Roussanov, and Thierry Foucault. [15]
The Review of Corporate Finance Studies is an academic journal that covers the finance sub-field of corporate finance. It began publication in 2012. It is published by Oxford University Press. [18] in 2019, it published 11 articles in two issues. It has an unofficial citation impact factor of 1.938 [19] based on the same methodology as Journal Citation Reports. [16] The current editorial team is Andrew Ellul [20] (Executive Editor), Isil Erel, Gregor Matvos, and Uday Rajan. [19]
The SFS Cavalcade North America is an annual academic conference held in North America covering the field of finance. The inaugural Cavalcade in 2011 was hosted by the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan with a program that contained 42 papers. The 2019 Cavalcade North America was hosted by the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University with a program that contained 135 papers. The conference chairs were Antoinette Schoar (Chair), Monika Piazzesi (Vice Chair), Ulrike Malmendier (Associate Chair), and Josef Zechner (SFS Advisory Chair). According to a comparison of 45 academic finance conferences by Reinartz and Urban (2017), "The Society for Financial Studies (SFS) Finance Cavalcade conference is the best large finance conference according to subsequent publication rates in TOP3 finance journals." [21] The 2020 Cavalcade North America will be hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the 2021 Cavalcade North America will be hosted by the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.
The SFS Cavalcade Asia-Pacific is an annual academic conference to be held in Asia-Pacific covering the field of finance. The inaugural Cavalcade Asia-Pacific in 2017 was hosted by PBC School of Finance at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. The 2019 Cavalcade Asia-Pacific was hosted by the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong, China with a program that contained 60 papers. The conference chairs were Kalok Chan (Chair) and Jun-Koo Kang (Vice Chair).
The SFS Council is the governing board of SFS. It includes three SFS officers, a council chair, and several councilors. The SFS officers are Laura Starks (President), Josef Zechner (Vice President), and Craig Holden (Secretary/Treasurer). The council chair is Raman Uppal. The councilors are Renee Adams, Alon Brav, Allaudeen Hameed, Kai Li, Tarun Ramadorai, and Karin Thorburn. [22] SFS holds an annual membership meeting each year at the SFS Cavalcade North America. At that meeting, the SFS officers, SFS journal executive editors, and the SFS Cavalcade Chair report on SFS activities to the membership.
The American Finance Association (AFA) is an academic organization whose focus is the study and promotion of knowledge of financial economics. It was formed in 1939. Its main publication, the Journal of Finance, was first published in 1946.
Maureen Patricia O'Hara is an American financial economist. O'Hara is the Robert W. Purcell Professor of Management, a professor of finance, and acting director in Graduate Studies at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. She has won numerous awards and grants for her research, served on numerous boards, served as an editor for numerous finance journals, and chaired the dissertations of numerous students. In addition, she is well known as the author of Market Microstructure Theory. She was the first female president of the American Finance Association. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from three European universities.

It was established following discussions at the 1986 Western Finance Association meetings, and the first issue was published in 1988. The current editor-in-chief is Itay Goldstein. It is considered to be one of the premier finance journals. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2020 impact factor of 5.814, ranking it 5/110 in the category "BUSINESS, FINANCE".
Sheridan Dean Titman is a professor of finance at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the McAllister Centennial Chair in Financial Services at the McCombs School of Business. He received a B.S. degree (1975) from the University of Colorado and an M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1981) from Carnegie Mellon University.
Alexander Ljungqvist is a Swedish economist, educator, scholar, writer, and speaker. He is a professor of finance at the Stockholm School of Economics, where he is the inaugural holder of the Stefan Persson Family Chair in Entrepreneurial Finance. His areas of expertise include corporate finance, investment banking, initial public offerings, entrepreneurial finance, private equity, venture capital, corporate governance, and asset pricing. Professor Ljungqvist teaches Master's, MBA, and executive courses in private equity and venture capital and a PhD course in corporate finance.
Campbell Russell "Cam" Harvey is a Canadian economist, known for his work on asset allocation with changing risk and risk premiums and the problem of separating luck from skill in investment management. He is currently the J. Paul Sticht Professor of International Business at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in Durham, North Carolina, as well as a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also a research associate with the Institute of International Integration Studies at Trinity College Dublin and a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford. He served as the 2016 president of the American Finance Association.

Söhnke Matthias Bartram is a professor in the Department of Finance at Warwick Business School (WBS). He is also a research fellow in the Financial Economics programme and the International Macroeconomics and Finance programme of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a charter member of Risk Who's Who, and a member of an international think tank for policy advice to the German government. Prior to joining the University of Warwick, he held faculty positions at Lancaster University and Maastricht University and worked for several years in quantitative investment management at State Street Global Advisors as Head of the London Advanced Research Center.
Craig Woodworth Holden was the finance department chair and Gregg T. and Judith A. Summerville Chair of Finance at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. His research focused on market microstructure. He was secretary-treasurer of the Society for Financial Studies. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Markets. His M.B.A. and Ph.D. were from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. He received the Fama-DFA Prize for the second best paper in capital markets published in the Journal of Financial Economics in 2009, the Spangler-IQAM Award for the best investments paper published in the Review of Finance in 2017-2018, and the Philip Brown Prize for the best paper published in 2017 using SIRCA data. His research has been cited more than 4,300 times. He has written two books on financial modeling in Excel: Excel Modeling in Investments and Excel Modeling in Corporate Finance. He has chaired 22 dissertations, been a member or chair of 62 dissertations, and serves on the program committees of the Western Finance Association and European Finance Association.
The European Finance Association (EFA) is a professional association of more than 2,000 professionals and financial economists involved in the high-level research, study, teaching, and practice of finance. The association was founded in 1974 and hosts an annual meeting in August. The 40th annual meeting of the EFA was held in Cambridge, UK in 2013. The 48th annual meeting was chaired by EFA President Professor Elena Carletti and was organised by Bocconi University in Milan, Italy in August 2021. The 49th annual meeting was organised by IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, in August 2022 and chaired by EFA Vice President Professor Xavier Vives. The 50th annual meeting will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2023 chaired by Professor Albert J. Mankveld at Vrij Universiteit Amsterdam. EFA also organises doctoral events including an intensive and competitive tutorial designed for PhD students in Finance who are nearing the end of their doctoral thesis and will soon be on the job market.
Gordon Phillips is an American financial economist, currently at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. He obtained his bachelor's degree at Northwestern University in 1986 and his Ph.D. and M.A. from Harvard University in 1991.
Ilya A. Strebulaev is a Russian- American financial economist, researcher, author, and speaker with expertise in venture capital, startups, and corporate innovation. He has been a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 2004. From 2018 to 2022 he was on the board of directors of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google.
Orly Sade is a financial economist based out of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who has been noted for her research regarding behavioral and experimental finance and crowdfunding platforms. Sade is the Israel Associate Professor of Finance at the Department of Finance, School of Business Administration at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is the first female professor in the field of finance at Hebrew University.
Henrik Cronqvist is the Robert J. and Carolyn A. Waltos Dean and Professor of Economics of the George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University in Orange, California, a position he has held since August 2022. He previously served as a professor of finance, Bank of America scholar, and vice dean for faculty and research at the University of Miami School of Business, where he conducted interdisciplinary research and taught finance and management courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Anat Ruth Admati is an economist and currently the George G.C. Parker Professor of Finance and Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business. In 2014, Time listed her as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Mariassunta Giannetti is an economist and a professor of finance at the Stockholm School of Economics. She won the Assar Lindbeck Medal in 2013.
Manju Puri is an economist who currently works as the J. B. Fuqua Professor of Finance at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Rüdiger Fahlenbrach is a German economist specialised in finance. He is a professor of finance at EPFL and holds the Swiss Finance Institute Senior Research Chair.
The Review of Finance is a bimonthly peer-reviewed academic journal covering all aspects of financial economics. It is published by Oxford University Press and is the official journal of the European Finance Association. The editor-in-chief is Marcin Kacperczyk.
Martin Schmalz is a German financial economist. He is the Head of the Finance, Accounting, Management, and Economics Area and Professor of Finance and Economics at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School. He is also the Chief Economist and Director of the Office of Economic and Risk Analysis of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.
