Sol-Feace [lower-alpha 1] is a 1990 horizontal-scrolling shooter video game developed by Wolf Team and published by Telenet Japan for the Sharp X68000 computer. Versions for the Sega CD and Sega Genesis were released later on, the latter renaming the game Sol-Deace. The player takes control of the titular starship as it must prevent a malfunctioning supercomputer from enslaving all of mankind. Gameplay involves shooting down enemies and avoiding projectiles, while collecting power capsules to increase the Sol-Feace's abilities. The Sol-Feace also has dual cannons that can fire shots diagonally.
The game's soundtrack was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, who would later work on the Tales series for Namco. Alongside Micronet's Heavy Nova , it was also one of the first launch titles for Sega CD in Japan, and was made as the console pack-in game in North America. Sol-Feace was met with mixed reviews from critics, who praised its fast-paced action, graphics and soundtrack but criticized its lack of originality and subpar quality compared to other similar games on the market. Sunsoft owns the rights to Sol-Feace after their acquisition of Telenet Japan's intellectual properties in 2009.
Sol-Feace is a horizontal-scrolling shooter. Controlling the titular starship, the player is tasked with preventing a malfunctioning supercomputer before it enslaves all of mankind. [1] The objective of each stage is to destroy incoming enemies and avoiding their projectiles. [1] The Sol-Feace has a pair of dual cannons that can be modified to either point forwards, backwards or diagonally, and can be arranged parallel to each other. [1] Shooting small capsules will leave behind power-up items that upgrade the Sol-Feace's abilities when collected — these include homing missiles, a piercing laser, and a wide shot. [1]
The game is composed of six stages, including mechanical bases, destroyed star vessels and the planet Jupiter [1] — each of these end with a boss fight that must be defeated in order to progress, which have a weak point that must be shot at to inflict damage. [1] The final stage has the player fighting against the supercomputer antagonist. [1] Between stages are animated cutscenes that help explain the game's plot, with the Sega CD release giving these full voice acting. [1]
Sol-Feace was originally released for the Sharp X68000 home computer on November 22, 1990. It was developed by Japanese studio Wolf Team and published by their parent company, Telenet Japan. [2] Music for the game was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, [3] who later helped work on the Tales series for Namco. Sol-Feace was met with mixed reviews from critics; while some praised the game's visuals, fast-paced gameplay and soundtrack, others criticized its lack of originality and for being subpar compared to other shoot'em up titles available.
Computer and Video Games magazine criticized the gameplay for lacking originality, unfavorably comparing it to games such as Hellfire and Gynoug , adding that much of the game's mechanics and features were done better on other Sega Genesis games beforehand. [10] Wizard stated it offered nothing new to the shoot 'em up genre, [6] while Retro Gamer said it was a "below par" launch game for the console, saying it was simply the Genesis version with a new CD soundtrack "tacked-on". [5] GamePro wrote for the Sega Genesis release that the power-up items weren't as impressive as those in titles such as Thunder Force III , while also disliking the game's short length. [7] In a retrospective review, AllGame disliked the sound effects for being mediocre and its music for being average. [9]
In a more positive light, Electronic Games called the Sega CD conversion a "solid side-scrolling shooter" for its sound effects, graphics and fast action-based gameplay, adding that Sega should be commended for making the game a pack-in for the peripheral. [11] GamePro liked the Sega Genesis version's detailed visuals and pumping soundtrack, as well as its stage designs. [7] They also wrote that the game could be a contender for a "shoot'em up award" had it existed in the magazine. [7] Computer and Video Games stated that the Sega CD version was not a "total waste of money", complementing its sound effects, fast speed, music and cutscenes, [10] while AllGame thought the version's dual-cannon mechanic was an interesting gameplay concept. [9] AllGame also praised its frantic gameplay and colorful visuals, concluding that it was worth trying out at the very least. [9]
Columns is a match-three puzzle video game released by Jay Geertsen in 1989. Motoi Sakuraba is a Japanese composer and keyboardist. He is known for his numerous contributions in video games, including the Tales, Star Ocean, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Golden Sun, and Dark Souls series, as well as several other anime series, television dramas, and progressive rock albums.
Altered Beast is a 1988 beat 'em up arcade video game developed and published by Sega. The game is set in Ancient Greece and follows a player character chosen by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demonic ruler of the underworld, Neff. By collecting three power-ups in a level, the player character transforms into one of five magical beasts. It was ported to several home video game consoles and home computers. Altered Beast was the pack-in game when the Genesis launched in North America and the Mega Drive in Europe.

Fantasy Zone is a 1986 arcade video game by Sega, and the first game in the Fantasy Zone series. It was later ported to a wide variety of consoles, including the Master System. The player controls a sentient spaceship named Opa-Opa who fights an enemy invasion in the titular group of planets. The game contains a number of features atypical of the traditional scrolling shooter. The main character, Opa-Opa, is sometimes referred to as Sega's first mascot character.
Silpheed is a video game developed by Game Arts and designed by Takeshi Miyaji. It made its debut on the Japanese PC-8801 in 1986, and was ported to the Fujitsu FM-7 and DOS formats soon after. It was later remade for the Sega CD and has a sequel called Silpheed: The Lost Planet for the PlayStation 2.
Bonanza Bros. is a 3D-style, 2D side-scrolling stealth action game developed and released by Sega in 1990. It was released in Japan in August 1995 and North America by Nintendo in December 1995. The player controls a starship, the Ragnarok, that must destroy a malfunctioning supercomputer on a human colony planet before it wipes out all of mankind. Gameplay is similar to Hudson's Star Soldier series, featuring power-up items that increase the player's abilities and parallax scrolling. The player can move their ship farther into the background to avoid enemies and obstacles in the way.
Namco Tales Studio Ltd., formerly known as Wolf Team, was a Japanese video game development company founded in 1986. The company was renamed in 2003 when Telenet Japan sold part of its stake and made Namco the majority shareholder. Namco Tales Studio was originally the primary developer of the Tales RPG series, as it had been since the series' beginning. In November 2011, it was announced that the current Tales Studio would be dissolved and would merge with their publisher, Namco Bandai Games. In February 2012, it was announced that the 80 people of the Tales team would join Bandai Namco Studios.

Valis: The Fantasm Soldier is a 1986 action-platform video game originally developed by Wolf Team and published by Telenet Japan for the MSX, PC-8801, X1, FM-7, and PC-9801 home computers. It is the first entry in the Valis series. It stars Yuko Asou, a Japanese teenage schoolgirl chosen as the Valis warrior and wielder of the mystical Valis sword to protect the Earth, the land of spirits, and the dream world Vecanti from demon lord Rogles. Throughout the journey, the player explores and search for items and power-ups, while fighting enemies and defeating bosses to increase Yuko's attributes.

King Glames, wielder of the sword Leethus, leads denizens of the dark world to conquer both Vecanti and Earth, seeking refuge for his people amid the destruction of their planet. Together with the demon warrior-maiden Cham and her sister Valna, Yuko must prevent Glames from destroying both worlds. Through the journey, the player explores and searches for items and power-ups while fighting enemies and defeating bosses.
Hellfire is a 1989 horizontally scrolling shooter arcade video game originally developed by Toaplan and published in Japan by Taito and North America by U.S.A. Games. The first horizontal shoot 'em up title to be created by Toaplan, the game takes place in the year 2998 where a space matter known as Black Nebula created by robot dictator Super Mech spreads and threatens to engulf human-controlled galaxies, as players assume the role of Space Federation member Captain Lancer taking control of the CNCS1 space fighter craft in a surprise attack to overthrow the enemies with the fighter craft's titular weapon.

It is the second entry in the eponymous series. It stars Yuko Asou, a Japanese schoolgirl teenager chosen to become the Valis warrior by wielding the titular mystical sword, after defeating the demon lord Rogles. The dream world Vecanti fell under the rule of emperor Megas, whose hatred towards his brother Rogles and bloodthirsty tendencies seeks to wipe out traces of the former tyrant, including his supporters. Gameplay varies between each version but all share similar elements, as the player explores and search for items and power-ups, while fighting enemies and defeat bosses.

Granada is a shooter video game developed and originally published by Wolf Team exclusively for the X68000 in Japan on 20 April 1990. The ninth title to be created and released by Wolf Team for the X68000 platform, the game is set on a futuristic Africa in 2016 where a war erupted over mining rights towards rare metals and has quickly escalated due to newly-introduced weapons called Maneuver Cepters, as players assume the role of mercenary Leon Todo piloting the titular Maneuver Cepter tank unit in an attempt to stop the conflict once and for all. Its gameplay mainly consists of action and shooting mixed with mission-based exploration using a main two-button configuration.
Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams is a scrolling shooter video game developed by Success and originally released in Japanese arcades in 1991. The first installment in the Cotton series, players assume the role of the young witch Cotton who, alongside her fairy companion Silk, sets out on her broomstick on a quest to defeat several monsters and get her Willow candy. Its gameplay mainly consists of shooting mixed with role-playing game elements using a main two-button configuration. It ran on the Sega System 16 hardware.
Star Cruiser is a role-playing first-person shooter video game developed by Arsys Software and released in Japan for the PC-8801 and X1 home computers in 1988. The game was released for the PC-9801 and X68000 computers in 1989, and then ported by Masaya (NCS) to the Mega Drive in 1990.
