History

Spartanburg was first known as Newberg, and under the latter name was founded in 1832. [4] A post office was established under the name Spartanburg in 1842, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. [5]

The Union Literary Institute, located at 8605 East 600 South, Union City, Indiana was a school founded in 1846 by abolitionist Quakers and free blacks from Ohio, Kentucky, and North Carolina, after the Indiana Legislature decreed in 1843 that "colored students" could not attend the public schools.
