Sprotborough (SYR) railway station was situated on the South Yorkshire Railway's line between Doncaster Cherry Tree Lane and Conisbrough. The station was intended to serve both Sprotbrough and Warmsworth, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England.
The station was located where the Warmsworth to Sprotbrough road crosses the line over the deep limestone cutting and was approached by a covered flight of 66 steps to the Sheffield-bound platform. [1] The station had two flanking platforms and a small wooden shelter which served as both ticket office and waiting room. Following the closure of the station on 1 January 1875, this structure served as a platelayers hut until the mid-1950s. See also Sprotborough (H&B) railway station.
Worthy of note, the station incorrectly spelled the name of the village with an extra 'o'; the village is spelled Sprotbrough.
The South Yorkshire Joint Railway was a committee formed in 1903, between the Great Central Railway, the Great Northern Railway, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, the Midland Railway and the North Eastern Railway to oversee the construction of a new railway in the Doncaster area of South Yorkshire, England. The five companies had equal rights over the line, each of the companies regularly working trains over it.

Sprotbrough and Cusworth is a civil parish in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, with most of its settlements on the western edge of the Doncaster built-up area. It lies between 1 mile (1.6 km) and 4 miles (6.4 km) to the west of Doncaster and is split by the A1(M) motorway. It had a population of 12,166 in 2001 and 12,134 at the 2011 Census. The parish covers some of Doncaster's outlying western suburbs and commuter belt including the villages of Sprotbrough, Cusworth, and a small part of Scawsby, in addition to several rural hamlets and farmsteads.
Wath railway station was one of three railway stations in Wath-upon-Dearne, South Yorkshire, England. It was the southern terminus of The Hull & South Yorkshire Extension Railway which became part of the Hull and Barnsley Railway in 1898 and was the southern terminus of a branch line from Wrangbrook Junction. The station was located on Station Road between the Great Central Railway's Wath Central station and the Midland Railway's Wath North station. Branch line trains connected with Sheffield-Cudworth-Hull trains at Wrangbrook.
Dinnington and Laughton railway station was situated on the South Yorkshire Joint Railway line between the town of Dinnington and village of Laughton-en-le-Morthen, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.
Denaby and Conisbrough railway station was a small station, the southern terminus of the South Yorkshire Junction Railway branch from Wrangbrook Junction. The station, built to serve Denaby Main and Conisbrough, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, was situated just to the north of the Mexborough to Doncaster line of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, close by the road linking the villages in its name. Access to the station was by a subway under the G.C. line.
Sprotborough (H&B) railway station was a small station on the South Yorkshire Junction Railway, which ran south from Wrangbrook Junction, where it joined the main line of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. Barnby Dun railway station was a small station on the South Yorkshire Railway's line between Doncaster and Thorne. It served the village of Barnby Dun, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. The original line followed closely the canal bank and the station was resited when the line was 'straightened' in the 1860s.
Maud's Bridge was a small railway station built by the South Yorkshire Railway on its line between Thorne and Keadby. The station was situated between Thorne and Medge Hall.
The River Don Navigation was the result of early efforts to make the River Don in South Yorkshire, England, navigable between Fishlake and Sheffield. The Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden had re-routed the mouth of the river in 1626, to improve drainage, and the new works included provision for navigation, but the scheme did not solve the problem of flooding, and the Dutch River was cut in 1635 to link the new channel to Goole. The first Act of Parliament to improve navigation on the river was obtained in 1726, by a group of Cutlers based in Sheffield; the Corporation of Doncaster obtained an Act in the following year for improvements to the lower river. Locks and lock cuts were built and by 1751 the river was navigable to Tinsley.
Askern railway station was a station on the Askern branch line of the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway between Doncaster and Knottingley. It served the town of Askern in South Yorkshire, England.
Doncaster railway station was built as a terminus for services on the Hull and Barnsley and Great Central Joint Railway in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It was reached by a triangular junction from the main line just outside town. The station was set at the north end of town, just beyond the Doncaster Avoiding Line, in the fork of the old A1 and the A19.
Warmsworth railway station was a railway station to serve the village of Warmsworth, South Yorkshire, England and was on the Hull and Barnsley and Great Central Joint Railway. It was built ready for the opening of the line on 1 May 1916 with flanking platforms and facilities. However, although the line opened to goods traffic on that date, along with the other stations on the line it never opened for passengers.
The Hull and Barnsley and Great Central Joint Railway was a joint line which ran from Aire Junction, on the main line of the Hull and Barnsley Railway, near Gowdall to the Great Central and Midland Joint Railway at Braithwell Junction.
Sprotbrough is a village in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, with a population of 7,548 at the 2021 census. The village is transected by the A1(M) motorway and is situated at the top of the Don Gorge, some 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Doncaster city centre. With Cusworth to the north, it forms the civil parish of Sprotbrough and Cusworth, which had a population of 12,134 in 2011.
Warmsworth is a village and civil parish of Doncaster in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. Its population was estimated at 3,908 in 2019. The village lies along the A1(M) Doncaster Bypass and the A630. The River Don is close to the village. Sprotbrough, Edlington, Conisbrough, Levitt Hagg and Balby surround Warmsworth. It lies 4 miles from Doncaster.
The York and Doncaster branch was a railway line that opened in 1871 connecting Doncaster with York via Selby in Yorkshire, England. This line later became part of the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and was the route that express trains took between London King's Cross, the north of England and Scotland. It was opened by the North Eastern Railway (NER) between York and Shaftholme Junction, some 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of Doncaster railway station. Between its opening in 1871 and the grouping in 1923, the line was used by both the NER, and the Great Northern Railway (GNR). All of the intermediate local stations that had opened with the line in 1871 closed down in the 1950s and 1960s leaving just Selby open between the town of Doncaster and the city of York.
Upton and North Elmsall railway station, was a railway station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway (H&B) in Yorkshire, England. The station served the villages of Upton and North Elmsall,. The station closed completely in 1959 and the track was lifted in 1967, however, in 2020, a proposal was forwarded to reinstate over 2 miles (3.2 km) of line for a new heritage railway.
Snaith and Pollington railway station was a station on the Hull and Barnsley and Great Central Joint Railway between Sykehouse and Carlton. It was built with the line which opened in 1916, but the station never opened to passengers, being used for goods traffic only. Like most stations on this line, it was situated near the town of Snaith and the village of Pollington. It was renamed to Pollington in July 1951, to avoid confusion with Snaith railway station on the Wakefield to Goole line. Despite never opening to passengers, the station had the necessary facilities, and the two flanking platforms remained in situ until 1960.
