Finningley railway station was a railway station built to serve the villages of Finningley and Blaxton, South Yorkshire, England. [2]
The first railway station to be built was some 500 yards (460 m) to the west of the level crossing on the main Bawtry to Thorne road (A614). The second station, still in South Yorkshire, was on the east of the level crossing, some 2 miles (3 km) west of the county boundary. It was located on the Doncaster to Lincoln Line approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) from RAF Finningley (now Doncaster Sheffield Airport). Although the station closed to passengers on 11 September 1961 [3] it was opened specially for trains from Doncaster to the Finningley Air Show until 1965 and on one occasion to serve the Royal Train when H.M. The Queen visited the Royal Air Force airfield. [1]
Nowadays only the derelict platforms remain, along with the former station buildings (which are a private residence) and the signal box, which remains in use to operate the adjacent level crossing.
Planning permission for a new station further north to serve the airport was granted by Doncaster Council in 2008 [4] and discussions regarding station design and service levels took place between the local authority, Network Rail and the various TOCs with a view to opening the new station in 2012. However, there was no progress on building a new station by June 2016. A 2012 report by Network Rail stated that more trains on the line would be required to make the station viable. [5] The service over the line was sparse, with just five Doncaster to Lincoln Central trains each way from Monday to Saturday in the May 2017 timetable. [6] There has been a call from Sheffield Chamber of Commerce [7] to provide a rail link to the Doncaster Sheffield airport and a new railway station for the air terminal. [8]
The council applied for the station in the New Stations Fund 2 in 2017 but was unsuccessful. [9]

The Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Railway, colloquially referred to as "the Joint Line" was a railway line connecting Doncaster and Lincoln with March and Huntingdon in the eastern counties of England. It was owned jointly by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and the Great Eastern Railway (GER). It was formed by transferring certain route sections from the parent companies, and by the construction of a new route between Spalding and Lincoln, and a number of short spurs and connections. It was controlled by a Joint Committee, and the owning companies operated their own trains with their own rolling stock. The Joint Line amounted to nearly 123 miles (198 km) of route.
Joan Croft Halt railway station was a small halt on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) situated by a level crossing at Joan Croft Junction in South Yorkshire, England. The junction gives access from the ECML to the Skellow line of the West Riding and Grimsby Railway and eventually to Hull, Immingham and Grimsby Docks.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport railway station was a proposed railway station in the Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) terminal area to allow an interchange of services between rail and air. The area used to have a railway station called Finningley to the north-east of the airfield, and was used by personnel from the former Royal Air Force base that the airport is sited on. However, the proposed station would have been a new-build facility on a new section of railway connecting the airport with the East Coast Main Line (ECML).
