St Stephen's Hospital Delhi is a private hospital in New Delhi, India. The hospital has 600 beds and currently functions as a superspecialty tertiary care center. [1]

Contents

History

The institution started as a dispensary in 1876 by the Delhi Female Medical Mission, on the banks of river Yamuna. The hospital was later established in 1885 [2] as a small facility with 50 beds in Chandni Chowk and opened by Lady Dufferin, Vicereine of India. [3] It was the first hospital for women and children. [4]

The hospital was started as 50 bedded facility in Chandni Chowk, overlooking Queen's Gardens [5] now known as Company Bagh way back in 1885 as a hospital for women and children. It was the dream of the Delhi Female Medical Mission to operate in a hospital. The St. Stephen's Hospital for Women and Children was founded in memory of Priscilla Winter, founder of Delhi Female Medical Mission In the late 1890s, the Mission's treated around 600-700 patients in the new hospital, 15,000 at the dispensaries, and 1,200 through home visits [6]

The hospital was centrally located in old Delhi and was the first hospital solely dedicated to the care of women and children in Delhi. [7] The hospital was known for its thorough hygiene and discipline. Although the hospital initially first lacked both resources and staff, it began to take off in 1891.

The hospital hired their first female doctor, Jenny Muller, a woman of Indian-German origins who had attended the London School of Medicine for Women. In 1893, a second female doctor, Mildred Staley joined. [8]

The hospital building was opened by Lady Dufferin, Vicereine of India. The foundation stone for the old hospital building at Tis Hazari was laid in 1906 and the hospital was opened in 1909. [9]

The maternity block at Tis Hazari campus was opened in 1969 by Indira Gandhi the Prime Minister of India. The foundation stone for the General Hospital was laid in 1972 by V. V. Giri the President of India and opened by Indira Gandhi in 1976. [10] The mother and child block was later named after Dr Lucy Oommen, the first Indian medical director of the institute and a Padma Shri awardee by Dr.A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India

A commemorative stamp was issued by the postal department in 1985 [11] with the picture of the central hospital building and the first day cover depicting the first hospital building at Chandni Chowk.

Education

St. Stephen's Hospital was the first one to begin training the Indian women as nurses in 1867.[ citation needed ] The training School for nurses was started under Alice Wilkinson—the first trained British nurse who joined the hospital in 1908. [12] Wilkinson became the hospital's nursing superintendent. She also founded the Trained Nurse's Association of India and worked as its secretary until 1948. [13] The first school of nursing in India was started much later in 1871 at Government General Hospital, Chennai.

The hospital is also one of the major teaching hospitals offering speciality and superspeciality courses affiliated to the National Board of Examinations and recognized by the Medical Council of India. The hospital also won the national award from the National Board of Examinations for the excellence in teaching in the Diplomate of National Board programme [14]

The hospital also trains laboratory technicians to perform standardized Hemophilia tests under the aegis of Hemophilia Federation of India [15]

The hospital has a rich tradition contributing to research and knowledge advancing healthcare. Records of publications from the institute date back to 1894 [16] on surgical procedures to much recent on red cell abnormalities. [17] The hospital also contributed to the World Health Organization Trauma Care Checklist Program Care Process Measures. [18] An active research group works in the area of gestational diabetes [19] and Rheumatology. [20]

The organisation is recognized by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.

Community Health Centre

The Community Health Centre, established in 1981 and inaugurated by Jagmohan, the then Lt Governor of Delhi and situated in Nand Nagri serve people with preventive, pro motive, curative & rehabilitative care [22]

Last polio ward in India

The hospital also runs the distinction of running the last polio ward in the country. [23] While, India eradicated polio in 2011, millions live with the scars left over by the disease. [21] The ward run by Dr Mathew Varghese, a renowned orthopedic surgeon who provides care, treatment and rehabilitation to individuals debilitated by polio [24]

Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavati was an Indian cardiologist. She was director of the National Heart Institute, Delhi, and the founder president of the All India Heart Foundation. The institute collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) in training students in preventive cardiology. Padmavati was awarded India's second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan in 1992. Padmavati, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was the first woman cardiologist in India and established the first cardiac clinic and cardiac catheter lab in India.

Purshotam Lal is an Indian cardiologist and chairman and director of Interventional Cardiology of the Metro Group of Hospitals. He has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan (2009), Padma Bhushan (2003),Dr. B. C. He had served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences in the BJP-led NDA government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 30 May 2019 to 7 July 2021. He represents Chandni Chowk in Delhi as a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha. He was elected to the office of Chairperson of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization from May 22, 2020. Vardhan has been prominent in the Indian government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He later resigned from his cabinet post ahead of the cabinet reshuffle in July 2021.

The Delhi Female Medical Mission (DFMM) was a medical mission in Delhi, India that was founded in the mid-19th century by an Indian-born Englishwoman named Priscilla Winter. The organization started as a dispensary along the Yamuna River in Delhi, but over time developed into a mission, which was then established as St. Stephen's Hospital for Women and Children, a hospital that remains in operation today.

Lucy Oommen was an Indian gynaecologist and the first medical director of Indian origin at the St Stephen's Hospital, Delhi. Born to P. K. Oommen and Kochannamma and sister to Jacob Oommen and Alice, in the south Indian state of Kerala, she graduated in medicine from the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore and joined St Stephen's Hospital Delhi as a surgeon in 1942. She then took charge as superintendent from Dr. Morris.

Dr Malvika Sabharwal is an Indian gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon and obstetrician at the Nova Specialty Hospitals of the Apollo Healthcare Group and at Jeewan Mala Hospital, New Delhi. The team led by her has been credited with the successful performance of the removal of the largest recorded fibroid through laparoscopic surgery. She leads the Gynae Endoscopy, a team of 140 doctors, involved in endoscopic surgical practices related to gynecology.

Yash Gulati is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He specializes in joint replacement and spine surgeries and is a visiting consultant at RAK Hospital, Ras al-Khaimah. He is the youngest orthopedic surgeon to win the civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Marie Elizabeth Hayes</span> Irish medical missionary to India

Marie E. Hayes, a native of Raheny, Ireland, one of few early female medical graduates from Ireland in 1904, became a medical missionary and chief of Rewari Hospital in India, part of the Cambridge Mission to Delhi. Hayes died unexpectedly from a pneumonia in 1908. Known for her work, passion, and character, a ward was built in her name in St Stephen's Hospital, Delhi.
