Stacy John Bragger (born 1984) is a Falkland Island journalist and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency since the 2017 general election. [1]

Education and career

Bragger grew up in the Falkland Islands before moving to the UK to study at Peter Symonds College and then the Surrey Institute of Art & Design. [2] After returning to the Falklands, Bragger went on to work at Falkland Islands Radio Service, rising to the position of News Editor during which time he worked on the documentary series Falklands 30 which marked the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War and was broadcast on BBC Radio. [2]

In 2012 he represented the Falkland Islands at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament [3] and following the 2013 Falkland Islands sovereignty referendum, Bragger toured Latin American nations with MLA Gavin Short to promote the Islanders' position in the sovereignty dispute. [4] In 2014 Bragger was appointed Executive Secretary for the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce.

Bragger has also served as Chairman of the Media Trust, Secretary of the Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association and in 2015 was the General Team Manager for the Falkland Islands at the Island Games in Jersey. [2]

Politics of the Falkland Islands

The politics of the Falkland Islands takes place in a framework of a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary representative democratic dependency as set out by the constitution, whereby the Governor exercises the duties of head of state in the absence of the monarch and the Chief Executive acts as the head of government, with an elected Legislative Assembly to propose new laws and hold the executive to account.

The Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands is the unicameral legislature of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands. The Legislative Assembly replaced the Legislative Council when the new Constitution of the Falklands came into force in 2009 and laid out the composition, powers and procedures of the islands' legislature.

Constitution of the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands Constitution is a predominantly codified constitution documented primarily within the Falkland Islands Constitution Order 2008, a statutory instrument of the United Kingdom. The Constitution, in its present form, was made on 5 November 2008 by Queen Elizabeth II in a meeting of the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace. It was laid before Parliament on 12 November 2008 and came into force on 1 January 2009, replacing the 1985 constitution.

Director of Finance of the Falkland Islands

The Director of Finance of the Falkland Islands is the government officer responsible for economic and financial matters in the Falkland Islands. The role and powers of the Director of Finance are set out in Chapter VI of the Falkland Islands Constitution. The position replaced the office of Financial Secretary in 2009 when the new Constitution came into effect.

William Robert Luxton is a Falkland Islander farmer and politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from the 2009 general election until his resignation in 2011. Ian Hansen

Ian Hansen is a Falkland Islander farmer and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since winning an uncontested by-election in 2011 which filled the seat vacated by Bill Luxton. Hansen had already served on the Legislative Assembly from 2003 until 2009. He was initially elected as a member of the Legislative Council, which was reconstituted into the Legislative Assembly with the implementation of the 2009 Constitution.

A referendum on political status was held in the Falkland Islands on 10–11 March 2013. The Falkland Islanders were asked whether or not they supported the continuation of their status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom in view of Argentina's call for negotiations on the islands' sovereignty.

Michael Poole is a British, Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2013 to 2017. Poole was the first member of the Legislative Assembly to have been born after the Falklands War.

Phyllis Mary Rendell MBE is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from 2013 to 2017.

Same-sex marriage in the Falkland Islands has been legal since 29 April 2017. A law to permit same-sex couples to marry passed the Legislative Assembly on 30 March, and was signed by Governor Colin Roberts on 13 April. The territory also recognises civil partnerships, open to both same-sex and different-sex couples.

2020 Falkland Islands electoral system referendum

A referendum on reforming the electoral system was held in the Falkland Islands on 24 September 2020, after being postponed from 26 March 2020 following the Coronavirus pandemic. Voters were asked if they wanted to replace the two existing electoral constituencies with a single constituency for the whole of the Islands. Although a majority of those who voted supported the change, the required two-thirds majority in both of the islands' constituencies was not achieved.
