The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a public research university in unincorporated Orange County, Florida. It is part of the State University System of Florida. With 71,913 students as of the Fall 2020 semester, it currently has the largest student body of any public university in the United States.

New College of Florida is a public liberal arts college in Sarasota, Florida. It was founded as a private institution, spent several years merged into the University of South Florida, and in 2001 became an autonomous college, the eleventh independent school of the State University System of Florida. Upon achieving independence, the school adopted its current name: New College of Florida. The school is distinguished by its unusual "contract system," in which students are given written evaluations instead of grades and agree to semester-long contracts in which a certain number of classes must be passed. For example, in a "three out of five" contract, a student who failed two classes would face no penalty, although one who failed three classes would risk losing the entire semester's credits. The system was devised to encourage academic experimentation and foster curiosity about disparate topics outside one's usual course of study.

It is located in Gainesville near the University of Florida, one of the state's major research institutions. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the joint college of engineering of Florida A&M University and Florida State University. Mark B. Rosenberg is the fifth president of Florida International University and former Chancellor of the State University System of Florida. Rosenberg earned a B.A. with Omicron Delta Kappa honors in 1971 from Miami University of Ohio and a Ph.D. in Political Science with a graduate certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976.
The history of the University of Florida is firmly tied to the history of public education in the state of Florida. The University of Florida originated as several distinct institutions that were consolidated to create a single state-supported university by the Buckman Act of 1905. The earliest of these was the East Florida Seminary, one of two seminaries of higher learning established by the Florida Legislature. The East Florida Seminary opened in Ocala 1853, becoming the first state-supported institution of higher learning in the state of Florida. As it is the oldest of the modern University of Florida's predecessor institutions, the school traces its founding date to that year. The East Florida Seminary closed its Ocala campus at the outbreak of the American Civil War and reopened in Gainesville in 1866
