The University of the West of England is a public research university,located in and around Bristol,England,UK. With more than 36,000 students and 4,200 staff,it is the largest provider of higher education in the South West of England.

Sir Howard Joseph Newby is a British sociologist. He was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Liverpool in 2008 and retired in December 2014. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1994 to 2001. He was appointed as the vice-chancellor of the University of the West of England (UWE),from March 2006. After 15 months at UWE he moved to the University of Liverpool and was almost immediately put on "gardening leave" at UWE for the duration of his year-long notice period,with the then deputy vice-chancellor,Steve West,acting up to the VC role before his subsequent substantive appointment. On 11 February 2014,it was announced that Newby would retire from his role as vice-chancellor of Liverpool in 2015.
Paul Gerard O'Prey is an academic leader and author who was Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Roehampton,London,for fifteen years 2004 - 2019. In 2019 he was appointed chair of the Edward James Foundation,which owns a large rural estate in the South Downs and runs West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. After working in various senior roles at the University of Bristol,in 2004 O'Prey was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Roehampton in south-west London,where he was also Professor of Modern Literature.
