Stig Asmussen is an American video game developer best known for his work on the God of War series for Santa Monica Studio and the Star Wars Jedi series for Respawn Entertainment. Stig Asmussen founded his own new AAA video game development studio in 2024.

Biography

Asmussen graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1998 with an Associate of Specialized Technology in Computer Animation Media. [1] He is the son of Jes Asmussen, University Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and Laser Applications at Michigan State University.[ citation needed ]

Throughout the God of War series, he worked as a lead environment artist, art director, and was game director of God of War III after Cory Barlog's departure. [2] In 2011, Stig Asmussen won the BAFTA Best Artistic Achievement Award for his work on God of War III. [3] In an interview in April 2012, according to David Jaffe (creator of God of War ), Asmussen was "doing cool stuff" at Santa Monica, and did not work on God of War: Ascension . [4]

In 2014, Asmussen left Santa Monica Studio. He has since joined Respawn Entertainment as a game director. [5] On May 4, 2016 – Star Wars Day – Asmussen announced Respawn Entertainment was making a third-person Star Wars game. [6] This was announced as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order . In 2022, Stig Asmussen announced a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor . [7] Asmussen left EA on September 13, 2023, five months after Star Wars Jedi: Survivor released. [8]

Stig Asmussen announced the founding of a new independent AAA video game studio in 2024. Asmussen revealed that the studio is currently developing a new AAA single-player game built on Unreal Engine 5. [9] The Giant Skull leadership team, in addition to Asmussen, consists of the following: lead producer Lauren McLemore, art director Patrick Murphy, CTO Jon Carr, design director Jeff Magers, animation director Brian Campbell, and COO/CFO Anthony Scott. Although no names were given, the press statement introducing Giant Skull stated that Rockstar, the studio behind GTA and Red Dead, had also contributed talent to the team. [10]

Kratos (<i>God of War</i>) Character and protagonist of the God of War video game series

Kratos is a character and the protagonist of Santa Monica Studio's God of War series, based on Greek mythology and, later, Norse mythology. He first appeared in the 2005 video game God of War, which led to the development of eight additional titles featuring the character as the protagonist. The game was first released on March 12, 2013, for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. It is the seventh installment in the God of War series and a prequel to the entire series. Loosely based on Greek mythology, it is set in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central motif. The player controls the protagonist, Kratos, the former servant of the God of War Ares, who tricked Kratos into killing his wife and daughter. In response to this tragedy, Kratos renounced Ares, breaking his blood oath to the god. Kratos was, therefore, imprisoned and tortured by the three Furies, guardians of honor and enforcers of punishment. Helped by the oath keeper, Orkos, Kratos escapes his imprisonment and confronts the Furies, aiming to free himself of his bond to Ares.

Marianne Krawczyk is a screenwriter and video game writer. She wrote the screenplay for Appleseed Alpha (2014), based on the manga by Masamune Shirow and directed by Shinji Aramaki. Krawczyk is best known for writing the installments of the God of War video game franchise, from its start in 2005, until 2015. She won a BAFTA Game Award for Best Story and Character for her work on God of War II (2007).

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a 2019 action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The story is set in the Star Wars universe, five years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. It follows Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis, who becomes a target of the Galactic Empire and is hunted throughout the galaxy by the Imperial Inquisitors while attempting to complete his training, reconcile with his troubled past, and rebuild the fallen Jedi Order. The player can use Kestis' lightsaber and Force powers to defeat enemies, including stormtroopers, wild beasts and bounty hunters. The game adopts a Metroidvania style of level design where new areas are accessed as Cal unlocks skills and abilities.

Project Ragtag was a codename for an untitled third-person action-adventure video game set within the Star Wars universe. It had been under development by Visceral Games since around 2013 and set to be published by Electronic Arts before its cancellation in 2017. The project was led by the creator of the Uncharted series, Amy Hennig. It was to be a linear game about a large-scale heist, taking place in the wake of events of Star Wars IV: A New Hope. Motive Studios and EA Vancouver had assisted the game's development. Visceral Games was shut down by Electronic Arts on October 17, 2017, and the game's development was rebooted by EA Vancouver to become an open world title. Despite this, the project was reportedly cancelled.

The 20th British Academy Video Game Awards are set to be hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on 11 April 2024 to honour the best video games of 2023. Held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, a host for the ceremony is yet to be announced. Nominations were announced on March 7, 2024, with epic fantasy roleplaying game Baldur's Gate 3 earning a leading ten nominations.
