Contents

Cliffhangers

The annual Shortland Street cliffhanger is a storyline at the end of the year's season, often a crisis, that leaves behind a question to be answered the following year. This technique is used to lure viewers back after the long break. Cliffhangers are usually carefully written as so storylines from throughout the year finally interconnect and come to a head.

Baby Landry or Donny Johnson 16 April 2018 Erin Landry Damo Johnson Erin Landry had a labour contraction at the hospital, and gave birth to a baby boy named Donny Johnson. Damo Johnson was revealed to be the actual father.
Billy Whitley-McCaskill 8 August 2018 Harper Whitley Drew McCaskill While Harper was relaxing in the hot tub at her home, she suffered a labour contraction, so she asked Drew and Boyd for help. Minutes before Drew arrived home, she had given birth to a baby named Billy, who is an intersex child, thanks to the help of Boyd Rolleston. Billy is Shortland Street's first ever intersex character for the first 26 years of the soap opera show. It is unknown whether Billy Whitley-McCaskill is actually a boy or a girl or even both genders born with both male and female genitals. Billy Whitley-McCaskill is played by actor Arlo Jackson.
Faith9 August 2019JenniferBrandonWhile in ED, Jen suffered a cardiac arrest due to complications with lung cancer, and also went into labour. She died just as the baby came out, Kylie convinces Brandon to name the baby "Faith" because of their faith in God. Kylie also made a promise to Jen, for her and Daniel Reinhart to be the godparents of Faith. Brandon tells Kylie that her and Dan are responsible to look after the baby for the rest of their life as he is emigrating to Papua New Guinea to do a mission for their church.
Amelie Warner 19 December 2019 Tess Hutchinson Phoenix Warner After Phoenix kept hiding secrets about the money for the necklace he bought her, Phoenix leaves to go to work. A few hours later, Tess has a contraction and was rushed to hospital. Phoenix and Chris made it to resus just in time for the baby to come out, and the baby was delivered by TK and Kylie

Kawe Osbourne 25 September 2018 Head injury or severe brain bleed due to a fall from a balcony Knowing that Esther had terminal heart failure, he proposed and married her on 23 September. However, he was killed on 25 September as Trevor and his associates threw him off the balcony of the hotel, with Esther suffering a cardiac arrest from the shock. Trevor died the day after at the operating table due to brain damage. Te Rongopai tried to donate Kawe's heart to Esther as his dying wish, which is both unethical and illegal under Commonwealth laws.
Robert Humphries17 December 2018Injuries from plane crashRobert, the pilot to the plane carrying Chris Warner, Mo Hannah, Kate Nathan and Jack Hannah, along with separately travelling Denise Fendley, suffered a heart attack whilst flying the aircraft. Chris tries to land the plane, but Rob awakens, causing Chris to lose control, and subsequently crash the plane. Afterwards, despite Chris and Denise's efforts, Rob's injuries prove fatal.
Ian Reid17 December 2018MurderedConvicted rapist Ian was admitted into hospital after being stabbed in prison. His nurse, and victim, Clare Sullivan, struggles to treat him, and ends up attacking him in rage. During a blackout at the hospital, a hooded figure, presumably Kylie Brown by the dark hood and grey sweatpants she is seen later wearing, entered Ian's room and killed him by pulling his stitches.
Dylan Reinhart17 December 2018Suffocated by Kylie Brown Whilst trying to kill new wife Kylie in a car accident, mirroring his previous victims, Dylan himself bore the worst of the injuries. Trapped, the car catches alight, and he himself catches fire. He escapes, and is brought into hospital with deep dermal burns to 40% of his body. Whilst recovering, he finally admits to the murders of Stephanie, Miranda and Julia to Boyd Rolleston and Kylie, leaving her distraught and dashing from the room in a state. She later reenters, and, alone with Dylan, kisses him. He declares her as perfect, to which she responds saying she isn't perfect, before climbing on the bed and suffocating him to death.
Mo Hannah 17 December 2018Injuries from plane crashIn the plane crash, Mo's son Jack Hannah is left with serious injuries, primarily a broken leg. Other passengers Chris Warner, Kate Nathan, Denise Fendley and himself have minor injuries; pilot Rob Humphries was already fatally injured. Mo goes looking for a road that Chris claims to have seen, brushing off Kate's concern when he leans over in pain, but returns without finding one. As the surviving members set up camp, Mo begins to blame Chris, despite Kate and Denise labelling him as heroic. A rapidly deteriorating Jack is in need for desperate medical attention, Mo and Chris go searching for help. During their tense search, the two come to blows, where Mo blames Chris for the death of his late daughter, Pixie Hannah, and the state of Jack. Mo then collapses in pain, where the severity of his injuries come to light. Chris goes to help, but Mo refuses, not wanting to seem weak and to be strong for Kate and Jack. When they return, Kate finds out Denise has been keeping the satellite phone for herself, but she threatens to kill her with the flare gun. Mo and Denise grapple for the flare, which she sets off in the sky accidentally. Angrily, she punches Mo in the affected area, before running. When the remaining group hear a helicopter, Mo and Kate kiss in relief, but Mo begins to cough up blood. Collapsing, he asks Chris to look after Jack and Curtis Hannah. Looking into the sun, he hears Pixie, before dying next to Chris and a sobbing Kate, as rescuers arrive too late.

He would be presumed dead for the next 18 years, until the Ferndale Volcanic Eruption, where he ran into Chris Warner at the Hospital, with what appeared to be suffering from amnesia.
Dr. Justine Jones 11 September 2008Car Bombing Justine faked her death to escape Don Lennox and the Whitetails, hired by the dodgy pharmaceutical company Scott Spear to kill her. She fled to Australia but returned to testify at the trial of John Grainger and the dodgy drug company. Now resides in Australia.

Nurse Hawks Logan 24th or 27th November 2017 Prison bombing in Syria While Hawks was working in a prison hospital in Syria, Sass Warner was informed by Foreign Affairs that Hawks was killed with no survivors in the bombing. A few months later however, on the day of Finn and Esther's wedding, in April 2018, Sass was later informed that Hawks is actually still alive, but had lost a leg from the explosion.
