Subrata Dutta (Hindi :सुब्रतदत्त);(18 September 1945 - 29 November 1975) popularly known as Jouhar was an Indian communist politician and guirella leader. Jouhar served as the General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation between 1974 and 1975. [1] [2]
Subrata Dutta was killed on Bhojpur Uprising in action with CRPF and Bihar Police. He was killed on firings with CRPF on 29 November 1975. [3] [4] [5]
Subrata Dutta was born on 18 September 1945 in a middle class family in Behala,West Bengal. His father Satyavrata Dutta was one of the founder of Students' Federation in Bengal and one of the senior journalist of Hindustan Times. [6] In 1953 The dutta family moven to Delhi. Jouhar spent his early student life in Delhi. [6] In 1961,Subrata dutta and his family returned to Calcutta.
In Calcutta Jouhar came to indentify himself as a anti-imperalist,anti-congress. In 1962,During India-China War he joined the Communist Party. After 1964,he joined Communist Party of India (Marxist). But in 1967,after the Naxalbari Farmers' Uprising he left CPIM. After 1969,He joined Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). He became the secretary of Bengal-Bihar border region of Chhotanagpur committee of CPIML. [6]
In 1970,Jouhar became a member of the Bihar state Committee member of the party. Following the martyrdom of Charu Majumdar he led the reorganisation of the party in Bihar and West Bengal. On 28 th July 1974,He was elected as general Secretary of the reorganised Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). It was under the leadership of reorganised Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) headed by Jouhar that the peasants armed struggle in Bihar entered the new revolutionary struggle phase. Jouhar worked hard in the armed struggle of Bhojpur peasent uprising. he finally embraced martyrdom on 29 th November 1975,in a attack of Central Reserve Police Force and Bihar Police. [11]

As of 1970 he was the Gopibhallavpur Area Committee secretary of CPI(ML). He emerged as a leader of tribal communities in Jhargram district,and struggled for promotion of Santhali language. Tudu was released from jail in 1977. He contested the Nayagram Assembly constituency seat in the 1977 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. He finishing in third place with 7,071 votes (17.49%). He stood as a candidate in the Jhargram constituency in the 1980 Indian general election,finishing in third place with 29,338 votes (5.97%).

On 28 July 1974 a new party central committee formed with Jouhar,Vinod Mishra and Swadesh Bhattacharya. Swadesh Bhattacharya is the founding central committee member along with Vinod Mishra and Subrata Dutta of the reorganised Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Anti-Lin Biao fraction. Subrata Dutta (Jouhar) became the first general secretary of the reorganised CPIML.
