In 2023 an earthquake hit southern Turkey [3] and cracks over a metre wide were reported, engineers considered the dam to be damaged beyond repair. [4] As a precaution the Turkish authorities opened the dam. [5]

Ceyhun Özçelik from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Department of Water Resources said that the water level in the dam had decreased to a meter and a half. [6]
