Sunil Mendis is a Sri Lankan corporate executive. He was the eleventh governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and a former chairman of the Hayley's Group of Companies. [1]
Educated at the St. Servatius' College,Matara [ citation needed ] and Royal College,Colombo,Sunil Mendis was a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Joining Hayleys,one of Sri Lanka's oldest and largest conglomerates,he went on to become its chairman and chief executive officer after having served there for 42 years. Prior to his appointment,he was a committee member of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and was a director of the Bank of Ceylon for many years. His other positions include being a Director of the Private Sector Infrastructure Development Company,the United States Educational Foundation in Sri Lanka as well as being a director of Export Development Board and the Board of Investment and on the Presidential Salaries Commission. After retiring as chairman of Hayleys Mendis was appointed as Governor of the Central Bank on 1 July 2004. [3]
During the period 2004-2005,Mendis served as the director of National Council for Economic Development at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and served as the chairman of the Sovereign Rating Committee for the Government of Sri Lanka. [4] He was awarded the title of Deshamanya in 2005 by the Sri Lankan Government. [4] During the same year,he also attended the opening of the Hatton National Bank's museum [5] and decided to change interest rates despite last year's tsunami disaster. [6]
He has been on the board of over 100 state and private sector institutions in Sri Lanka as well as 7 companies internationally. [7] He retired from the position of Governor on 30 June 2006,only two years into a six year term,following the election of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mendis then took on a role as a Director of Cargills PLC.
The mixed economy of Sri Lanka was worth $84 billion by nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 and $296.959 billion by purchasing power parity (PPP). The country had experienced an annual growth of 6.4 percent from 2003 to 2012,well above its regional peers. This growth was driven by the growth of non-tradable sectors,which the World Bank warned to be both unsustainable and unequitable. Growth has slowed since then. In 2019 with an income per capita of 13,620 PPP Dollars or 3,852 (2019) nominal US dollars,Sri Lanka was re-classified as a lower middle income nation with the population around 22 million (2021) by the World Bank from a previous upper middle income status.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka is the monetary authority of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1950 under the Monetary Law Act No.58 of 1949 (MLA) and in terms of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act No. 16 of 2023,the CBSL is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. The Central Bank has administrative and financial autonomy. The CBSL has two main boards in operation,namely,the Governing Board (GB) and the Monetary Policy Board (MPB).

Deshamanya is the second-highest national honour of Sri Lanka awarded by the Government of Sri Lanka as a civil honour. It is awarded for "highly meritorious service",and is conventionally used as a title or prefix to the recipient's name.

Chandrasekera Rohitha Bandara Bogollagama is a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was the former Governor of Eastern Province,prior to which he served as the Cabinet Minister of Foreign Affairs from 28 January 2007 until he was defeated in the General Elections held on 8 April 2010,losing his seat in parliament.
Deshamanya Gamani Corea was a Sri Lankan economist,civil servant and diplomat. He was also the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1974 to 1984,Ceylon's Ambassador to the EEC,Belgium,Luxembourg and the Netherlands,the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs of Ceylon and the Senior Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Ceylon.

Amarananda Somasiri Jayawardena was a Sri Lankan economist and civil servant. He was the former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka,the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance &Treasury and an Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He died on 29 May 2018 at the age of 81 or 82.

Through Hayleys,Perera controls Amaya Leisure,The Kingsbury and Singer while Royal Ceramics,LB Finance,and Lanka Tiles are controlled by Vallibel One. Perera has been closely linked to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa,having served as chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka from 2007 to 2010 and Transport Secretary from 2011 to 2015. He was appointed a Member of Parliament in the National List in June 2022,succeeding Basil Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna,briefly serving President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as his Minister of Investment Promotion from June to July 2022.
Lakshman Arjuna Mahendran is a Sri Lankan-born Singaporean economist and banker. He is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL),having been appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in January 2015 and served until the end of his term on 30 June 2016. He was the former Managing Director of HSBC Private Bank,Chief Investment Officer of Emirates NBD as well as chairman and Director-General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka. Mahendran is currently residing in Singapore,which has refused to extradite him on a request from Sri Lanka routed through interpol.
