Suzanne Miles (born November 18,1970) [1] is a Republican politician from her native Owensboro,Kentucky,who represents the 7th District (Daviess,Henderson,and Union counties) in the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Miles graduated from Apollo High School in Owensboro,and continued her education at Transylvania University in Lexington,Kentucky. During her senior year at Transylvania,Miles became a small business owner when she purchased a clothing store in Owensboro,Kentucky. Shortly after graduating from Transylvania,Miles began working at Town and Countrywear Ladies Clothing and Accessories,which she owned and operated until 2008. [2] Miles continues to live in Owensboro to this day.
Miles won her position in a special election held on December 10,2013. She defeated Democrat Kim Humphrey of Morganfield in Union County,3,548 (50.8 percent) to 3,436 votes (49.2 percent). Miles's narrow victory was propelled by her strong showing in her own Daviess County in western Kentucky,where she and her father,Billy Joe Miles,are well known. She beat Humphrey 2,564 to 976 in Daviess County. [3]
The seat opened when Democrat John Arnold of Sturgis in Union County resigned in September amid allegations that he had sexually harassed legislative staffers. [4] Arnold had won the seat by only five votes over the Republican Tim Kline in the general election held on November 6,2012. [3]
Prior to her election to the legislature,Miles had been a district representative for U.S. Representative Brett Guthrie of Kentucky's 2nd congressional district. Miles became the 46th Republican in the Kentucky House,the highest strength her minority party had held in the chamber since 1921. [3]
Owensboro is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Daviess County,Kentucky,United States. It is the fourth-most populous city in the state. Owensboro is located on U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 165 about 107 miles (172 km) southwest of Louisville,and is the principal city of the Owensboro metropolitan area. The 2020 census had its population at 60,183. The metropolitan population was estimated at 116,506. The metropolitan area is the sixth largest in the state as of 2018,and the seventh largest population center in the state when including micropolitan areas.

Wendell Hampton Ford was an American politician from Kentucky. He served for twenty-four years in the U.S. Senate and was the 53rd Governor of Kentucky. He was the first person to be successively elected lieutenant governor,governor,and United States senator in Kentucky history. He was the Senate Democratic whip from 1991 to 1999,and was considered the leader of the state's Democratic Party from his election as governor in 1971 until he retired from the Senate in 1999. At the time of his retirement he was the longest-serving senator in Kentucky's history,a mark which was then surpassed by Mitch McConnell in 2009. He is the most recent Democrat to have served as a Senator from the state of Kentucky.

David E. Boswell is a former Democratic member of the Kentucky Senate,having represented the 8th District from 1990 to 2011. Earlier he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1978 through 1983. In 1983,he defeated Republican Richard Turner to be elected Agriculture Commissioner of Kentucky with 64%. In 1987,he was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor unsuccessfully in the Democratic Primary on a ticket paired with Grady Stumbo. The Stumbo-Boswell ticket came in fourth. He returned the political arena and was the 2008 Democratic nominee for U.S. Representative for Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District,and lost to Republican nominee Brett Guthrie. The congressional seat became open because of the retirement of Republican Ron Lewis.

Thomas Stevenson Pettit was a newspaper publisher and politician from the U.S. state of Kentucky. Orphaned at age ten,he found work in a printing house in his hometown of Frankfort. In 1864,he moved to Owensboro,Kentucky,and purchased a newspaper called the Monitor. He incurred the wrath of Union Army General Stephen G. Burbridge because he vigorously criticized the Republicans' policies during the Civil War;Burbridge ordered Pettit arrested and relocated behind Confederate lines for the duration of the war.
Kenneth Upchurch is an insurance agent with Upchurch Insurance and Financial services. He was the owner publisher of the Monticello Stage,a community newspaper in Monticello,Kentucky,who is a Republican member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from District 52,which encompasses Wayne,McCreary,and a portion of Pulaski counties in the south-central portion of the state. Upchurch held this seat from January 1999 to January 2011 and then returned after a two-year hiatus to the position early in 2013.
