The park opened in 1981 was formerly named Colonels Softball Diamond and Colonels Softball Complex. Prior to the 2018 season, the park underwent major renovations. It included a new synthetic turf infield by Geo Surfaces, new lights and renovated dugouts and seating. [1] The renovations were funded by donations from Neal Swanner and the Norman Swanner Foundation. In honor of those donations, the playing surface was named Swanner Field. [1]
In addition to regular season play, the softball complex was the site of the 1996 Southland Conference softball tournament. [10]

The NSU Challenge is an American college football rivalry game played annually between the Nicholls Colonels football team representing Nicholls State University and Northwestern State Demons football team representing Northwestern State University. Both universities are members of the Southland Conference. The NSU Trophy, which is a wooden trophy enscripted with NSU goes to the winning team. Although Nicholls has changed their athletic brand name from Nicholls State to Nicholls in 2018, thus not going by NSU anymore in athletics, the rivalry is still called the NSU Challenge.

The Colonels, led by second-year head coach Richie Riley, played their home games at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, Louisiana as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 21–11, 15–3 in Southland play to earn a share of the regular season championship. As the No. 2 seed in the Southland tournament, they lost in the semifinals to Stephen F. Austin.
