The women's 200 metre butterfly event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 17 and 18. [1]

Polish swimmer and world record holder Otylia Jędrzejczak added gold to her two silver medals by a storming victory in this event, and by becoming the nation's first ever swimming champion, in an outstanding time of 2:06.05. [2] [3] Three-time Olympian Petria Thomas of Australia managed to repeat her silver from Atlanta, lowering her time to 2:06.36. Japan's Yuko Nakanishi, on the other hand, took home the bronze at 2:08.04. [4]

Otylia Jędrzejczak is a Polish swimmer. She was the Olympic champion from 2004 Athens in the 200 metre butterfly. She finished 4th in this event in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and also swam at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In Athens 2004 she also silvered in 400 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly. Three times she broke the world record in the women's 200 m butterfly.

Poland competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's eighteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics, except the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, because of the Soviet boycott. The Polish Olympic Committee sent a total of 194 athletes to the Games, 132 men and 62 women, to compete in 21 sports. Regarded as one of Macedonia's top swimmers, Stojanovska has earned All-American honors and numerous Atlantic Coast Conference titles in her own discipline while studying in the United States.

Mei Yen “Christel” Bouvron is a Singaporean former swimmer, who specialised in freestyle and butterfly events. She is a two-time Olympian, a double finalist at the Asian Games (2002), and a gold medalist in the 200 m butterfly at the Southeast Asian Games (2003). Bouvron also became the first swimmer to qualify for the Olympics since 1920, while training for the Fighting Irish, and majoring in anthropology and classics at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Hsieh Shu-tzu is a Taiwanese former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly and individual medley events. She represented Chinese Taipei in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later captured a silver in the 200 m butterfly at the 2000 Asian Swimming Championships in Busan, South Korea.
