Bayan Jumah is a Syrian swimmer from Aleppo. In August 2008, she withdrew from a heat in the 50 meter freestyle in which she would have faced Olympian Anya Gostomelsky, refusing to swim alongside an Israeli. Gostomelsky set a new Israeli national record in the race. Asked what her reaction was, Gostomelsky said: "I didn't notice that the lane was empty. That's her problem."

Anton Mikhailovich Chupkov is a Russian competitive swimmer. He is the European record holder in the long course 200 metre breaststroke and the Russian record holder in the long course 100 metre breaststroke. He formerly held the world record in the long course 200 metre breaststroke. At the 2015 European Games he won four gold medals in individual and relay events. He won the bronze medal in the 200 metre breaststroke at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He won the gold medal in the 200 metre breaststroke at the 2017 and 2019 World Aquatics Championships.
The 2020 European Aquatics Championships were scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 11 to 24 May 2020. However, on 5 May it was announced that the event had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 10 to 23 May 2021 set as replacement dates.

Katie Ledecky of the United States and Léon Marchand of France earned FINA Swimmer of the Meet honors based on a scoring system that awards points for top-four finishes.
