Sydney Barta

Sydney Barta (born February 16, 2004) is an American track and field athlete. [1] An amputee, she competed in the 100 metres and 200 metres in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. [2] In 2019, she was awarded US Paralympics Track and Field Female High School Athlete of the Year. [1]

Biography

Barta was born and grew up in Arlington, Virginia. Her mother, Laura, played basketball for Princeton University in New Jersey. When Barta was six years, she was finishing a fun run the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon when metal scaffolding fell onto her, shattering her left ankle. [3] She spent the next four months in hospital and, while being treated for her injury, she developed compartment syndrome. [4] Her wound became infected leading to a portion of her left leg being removed over the course of 21 surgeries. [3] She was eight years old when she competed in her first track and field fixture in Fort Wayne. [3] Barta competed in seven events and swam the 200m freestyle swimming over the course of two days. At the event, Barta met the head of the Challenged Athletes Foundation which resulted in the organization donating an improved running blade to her. [3]

Barta won gold in the 100, 200 and 400 metres at the 2019 World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Switzerland and her performance in this championship landed her a place in the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru, where she won gold in the 100 metres. [3] [5] Barta competed in the World Para Athletics Championships in 2019 where she entered three events finishing 7th in the shot put T64, 4th in the 200 metres T64 and 9th in the discus throw T64. [4] In the 2020 Paralympic Games, Barta qualified for the 200 metres final where she narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing 4th behind Kimberly Alkemade of the Netherlands. [2]

Education

Barta is a high school graduate of The National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.. She now attends Stanford University and is a Pi Beta Phi.

She won Gold in Rio at the 2016 Paralympic Games in 100m T11 where she broke the world record and T11 200m, beating the previous Paralympic record in the process, thus making her a double Paralympic champion.

Hellen Onsando Obiri is a Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. She is the only woman to have won world titles in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. Obiri is a two-time Olympic 5000 metres silver medallist from the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she also placed fourth over the 10,000 metres. She is a two-time world champion after winning the 5000 m in 2017 and again in 2019, when she set a new championship record. Obiri also took world bronze for the 1500 metres in 2013 and silver in the 10,000 m in 2022. She won the 3000 metres race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She is the 2019 World Cross Country champion. Obiri triumphed in the 2023 Boston Marathon, her second marathon race. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world all-time list.

Nathan Maguire is a British wheelchair racer. He won multiple medals at both the 2018 and 2021 World Para Athletics European Championships, and also won the 400 metres mixed class race at multiple British Athletics Championships. Maguire competed in the 4 × 400 metres relay T53/T54 at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, and competed in the 400 metres T54, 800 metres T54 and mixed 4 × 100 metres relay events at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics. He was part of the British team that won a silver medal in the 2020 Paralympic mixed 4 × 100 metres relay. He also competed for England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and won the 1500 metres T54 event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Anna Steven is a para-athlete from New Zealand. She is representing New Zealand at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Marissa Papaconstantinou is a Canadian Paralympic athlete who competes in the 100m T64 in international level events. She qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in 100m T64 and 200m T64.
