Tangerang derby is a Indonesian football derby between two clubs from Greater Tangerang (Tangerang City and Tangerang Regency), namely Persikota Tangerang and Persita Tangerang. [1] The rivalry and hostility between these two clubs began with the expansion policy of Tangerang Regency, which then gave founded to Tangerang City. [2] The derby is known as one of the hottest derbies in Indonesian football, but unfortunately it is also known as a very forbidden derby, matches between the two are often postponed, cancelled, and have an impact on clubs losses. History

Origins

Unlike the Indonesian El Clásico between Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung which can be said to be old and long-standing, the Tangerang derby can actually be said to be still young. The beginning of the rivalry between the two Tangerang clubs was caused by the expansion of the Tangerang region (which at that time was still a regency). When it was still called Tangerang Regency, the only football club that existed was Persita Tangerang which had been established since 1953. [2]

After the separation from Tangerang Regency, Tangerang City was founded in 1993. The founding of Tangerang City was then followed by the initiation of establishing a football club for Tangerang City, and Persikota Tangerang was founded in 1994. Through the congress, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) ratified Persikota Tangerang as a football club and was entitled to compete in the 1995–96 Liga Indonesia Second Division season or one year after its founding. [2]

The emergence of rivalry

After the founding of Persikota Tangerang, football fans in Tangerang were divided, those who represent the Tangerang Regency support Persita Tangerang or are known as Benteng Viola. Meanwhile, Persikota Tangerang who represent the Tangerang City, the supporters are called Benteng Mania. The two groups of supporters often clash with each other, even when there is no match between the two. Therefore, riots often occur when these two groups of supporters meet or simply pass each other. [3]

Match banned

Continuous riots resulting in loss of life put Tangerang football under threat. The peak of this chaos was the issuance of a fatwa that it was haram by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) regarding the football match in Tangerang, especially the match between Persita Tangerang and Persikota Tangerang. Not only are official matches prohibited, but also holding football matches at Benteng Stadium is also prohibited. This decision came about because every time there was a match at Benteng Stadium, there were always riots and fatalities, so the MUI decided that holding the match at Benteng Stadium would do more harm than good. After the ban was issued, the two Tangerang clubs suffered, Persikota Tangerang and Persita Tangerang had to start the league from the lower division again. [4]

Even though the Tangerang derby did not last too long, it still left memories for the football players there. One of the former players of the Indonesian national football team who remembers the Tangerang derby is Firmansyah, who defended Persikota Tangerang for 6 seasons from 2000 to 2006. During his time as a Persikota Tangerang player, he felt the extraordinary atmosphere of the Tangerang derby, he was even included in the Persikota Tangerang squad when they were at their peak. [5]
