At the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 26–30 July 2002. The route for the marathon event crossed Manchester city centre and finished in the stadium. The race walk events began alongside the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays. There were twenty-five men's events and 23 women's events; the schedules were identical except that there were men's 3000 metres steeplechase and 50 kilometres walk events. Pole vaulter Dominic Johnson won a bronze medal, Saint Lucia's only medal of the Games.

Fiji competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from 23 July to 3 August. This marks Fiji's return to the Commonwealth Games. The country was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations in September 2009 following the 2006 military coup which brought Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to power. With elections due on 17 September to restore democracy after eight years of military-led rule, Fiji's suspension was lifted in March 2014. After missing the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the country was thus able to return in time for Glasgow however it came too late for them to enter a team in the rugby sevens tournament. The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee confirmed a delegation of twenty-six athletes in six sports.

Four athletes took part in track and field athletics, all in marathons, while two participated in the swimming tournament's 50 m freestyle category. The flagbearer for the opening ceremony was Andrew Thomas Mlugu, who was Tanzania's first Olympic judoka. His counterpart in the closing ceremony was Alphonce Felix Simbu, who had earned the nation's best finish at the Games by placing fifth in the men's marathon. Prior to these Games, Tanzania had sent athletes to twelve editions of the Summer Olympics.
