Tapiolan urheilupuisto (Swedish : Hagalunds idrottspark, 'Tapiola Sports Park') is a sports park in the Tapiola district of Espoo, Finland. The park includes several sports halls and football pitches, as well as the multipurpose Espoo Metro Areena. [1] The Urheilupuisto metro station, which connects the park to the Länsimetro, was opened in 2017. [2]

Football fields

The park includes the home stadium of the football teams FC Honka of the Veikkausliiga and FC Honka Naiset of the Kansallinen Liiga. The stadium was built in 1970 and later expanded in 2007. It is owned by the City of Espoo and seats 4,100. The pitch measures 104 m x 67 m.

There are several other football pitches and practice fields, surfaced with grass or artificial turf with sand infill, in the Tapiola Sports Park. They are available to the public and are used for both training and matches. [3]

Esport

Esport is a fitness and exercise company that operates six sports centers across Greater Helsinki. The two Esport locations at Tapiolan Urheilupuisto, Esport Center and Esport Arena, together constitute one of the largest indoor sports centers in the Nordic countries, covering over 55,000 m2 (590,000 sq ft).

Esport Center

Esport Center was opened in 1981 and the adjoining Esport Fitness Center was opened in 1983. Comprising over 20,000 m2 (220,000 sq ft), the center features two gyms with diverse training options; more than 50 racket sport courts, including thirteen indoor and two outdoor tennis courts, sixteen badminton courts and six squash courts; a selection of group sports facilities, including the HotStudio for hot yoga and pilates and the TripStudio for Les Mills The Trip indoor cycling classes; the Esport Pro Shop, a sports equipment store; and the Esport Café. Espoo Center houses the OVO Training Center, a facility used by the gymnastics club Olarin Voimistelijat ry (OVO), which boasts one of the top aesthetic group gymnastics teams in the world. [5]

The center serves as physical headquarters to the Espoo Squash Rackets Club (ESRC), the largest squash club in Finland. [6]

Extreme Esport

Extreme Esport was opened at the Esport Center in 2018. It offers a wide range of indoor athletic activities and games including a giant trampoline area, a "Ninja Warrior" obstacle course, dodgeball courts, a ropes course, and a foam pit. [7]

Espoo Metro Areena

Espoo Metro Areena (previously Barona-areena) is a privately owned sports arena located in the Tapiolan Urheilupuisto. The arena has been primarily used for ice hockey and it was the home arena of the Espoo Blues of the Liiga from 1999 to 2016, and of Espoo United of the Mestis from 2016 until the franchise was dissolved in 2018. It is able to accommodate 6,982 seats for ice hockey games and 8,000 for concerts. [8]

Espoo hosted the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship and all games were played at Espoo Metro Areena. [9] [10]

Kiekko-Espoo Naiset are an ice hockey team in the Auroraliiga. They play in the Tapiola district of Espoo, Finland at the harjoitusareena of the Tapiolan urheilupuisto. The team was founded as Espoon Kiekkoseura (EKS) in 1989 and has also been known as Espoo Blues Naiset and Espoo United Naiset during its tenure in the Auroraliiga. Kiekko-Espoo have won the Aurora Borealis Cup as the Finnish Champions in women's ice hockey sixteen times, six more wins than any other team in league history; at least one Finnish Championship medal was won under each of the four names.

FC Honka is a Finnish football club based in Espoo. It was founded in 1957 as Tapion Honka, and changed its name to FC Honka in 1975. The club will play in Kakkonen in the 2024 season, after Esport Honka filed for bankruptcy in November 2023. The club previously played in the Finnish premier division (Veikkausliiga), having been promoted for the first time in their history at the end of the 2005 season. It plays its home matches at the Tapiolan Urheilupuisto.

The 2019 Veikkausliiga was the 89th season of top-tier football in Finland. Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi were the defending champions. KuPS won the title.

Alavuden Peli-Veikotry or APV is a sports club in Alavus, Finland. APV was founded in 1953 as a speciality football club – tradition holds that it was the first specialty football club to be founded in rural Finland – but expanded to include other sports over time. The club now offers programs in football, futsal, ice hockey, and pesäpallo and is best known for its youth and junior teams. APV's representative ice hockey teams play in the men's fourth-tier II-divisioona and in the women's second-tier Naisten Mestis. The club's representative men's pesäpallo team plays in the Suomensarja, the third-tier league below the Superpesis and Ykköspesis.

The 2020–21 Naisten Liiga season was the thirty-eighth season of the Naisten Liiga, Finland's elite women's ice hockey league, since the league's creation in 1982. The season began, as scheduled, on 5 September 2020, making the Naisten Liiga the first women's national ice hockey league in Europe and, quite likely, in the world to return to play for the 2020–21 season.

The 2022 World Ringette Championships was an international ringette tournament and the 14th (XIV) World Ringette Championships. The tournament was organized by the International Ringette Federation (IRF) and was contested in Espoo, Finland, from October 31 – November 6, 2022. The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, acted as a patron of the event. The previous world championships, the 2021 WRC, had been planned to be hosted by Finland in Helsinki, but were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
