Wang Hao is a retired Chinese table tennis player. and the current Chinese Men's Team head coach. He became the world champion in men's singles in Yokohama, Japan, in May 2009, defeating three-time World Champion Wang Liqin 4–0. His other notable accomplishments include being a three-time World Cup Champion in 2007, 2008 and 2010, a singles silver medalist at the 2004 Summer Olympics, 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. In January 2010, he was replaced by Ma Long as the #1 rank on the official ITTF world rankings. He was previously ranked #1 on the official ITTF world rankings for 27 consecutive months, from October 2007 to December 2009. In April 2011, he was again the top ranked male player in the world. He is known to execute the Reverse Penhold Backhand (RPB) with exceptional skill.

Tennis competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were held from August 10 to August 17 at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre. The DecoTurf surface rendered the event a hardcourt tournament.
The tennis tournaments at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were staged at the All England Club in Wimbledon, from 28 July to 5 August. Tennis has been a part of the Summer Universiade program since the games' first edition in 1959, with the exception of the 1975 Summer Universiade and again in 1989. The first change at the program was at the 1987 edition, when FISU decided awards two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals, extinguishing the fourth place. The second change was in 2009, when the team competitions were included. Currently, seven events are played at Universiade. Individual, double and team contests for men and women, as well as mixed doubles.

The competition featured 40 long course (50m) pool events and 2 open water events, held at the Universiade Center Aquatic Center and the Seven Star Bay, respectively. This edition marked the first time an open water event was held at an Universiade.

Svetlana Germanovna Parkhomenko is a retired Soviet and Russian tennis player and tennis coach. She was the winner of the Soviet singles tennis championships in 1985 and nine times Soviet champion in women's doubles and mixed doubles. On the international level, she was the winner of the 1983 European amateur championships in women's and mixed doubles, bronze medalist of the 1983 Universiade in women's and mixed doubles, and winner of eight WTA Tour doubles tournaments.
