Tennis at the 2019 African Games |
The men's singles event at the 2019 African Games was held from 24 to 29 August at the Cheminots Club. [1]
Denis Indondo is the defending champion, but he doesn't participate in this year event. [2]
This event is a qualification event to the 2020 Summer Olympics. The winner is qualify to the men's singles event, if he meets the following requirements: His ranking is within the top 300 on the ATP Singles Rankings of 7 June 2021 and doesn't qualify any other athlete from his nation via Direct Acceptance. [3]
Mohamed Safwat of Egypt won the gold medal, defeating his fellow countryman Karim-Mohamed Maamoun in the final, 6–3, 6–4.

The United States' Lindsay Davenport defeated Spain's Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final, 7–6(10–8), 6–2 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics. In the bronze medal match, the Czech Republic's Jana Novotná defeated the United States' Mary Joe Fernández, 7–6(10–8), 6–4. Sánchez Vicario became the second woman to win multiple Olympic tennis medals in singles ; Fernández would have done so as well, but the rules had been changed since the last Games to add a bronze medal playoff match.
Spain's Rafael Nadal defeated Chile's Fernando González in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–2), 6–3 to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The win gave him the third of five components of the career Golden Slam, having already won the French Open and Wimbledon. He would go on to win the Australian Open and the U.S. Open to become the second man to complete the career Golden Slam in singles. Following the event, Nadal became the world No. 1 for the first time, ending Roger Federer's record streak of 237 consecutive weeks with the top ranking. González became the first man to win a medal in men's singles across consecutive Olympiads since Charles Winslow in 1920. In the bronze medal match, Serbia's Novak Djokovic defeated the United States' James Blake, 6–3, 7–6(7–4). It was Serbia's first Olympic tennis medal.
Russia's Elena Dementieva defeated compatriot Dinara Safina in the final, 3–6, 7–5, 6–3 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In the bronze medal match, Russia's Vera Zvonareva defeated China's Li Na 6–0, 7–5. This was the first Olympic medal sweep in tennis since 1908, when three British women won medals in the outdoor women's singles tournament. It was the fifth podium sweep in tennis in Olympic history, all previous sweeps were by British athletes. It was Russia's first victory in the women's singles. Dementieva became the third woman to win multiple Olympic singles medals, following Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and the first to do so in non-consecutive Games.
In the boys' singles tournament of the 2009 Australian Open, Yuki Bhambri won in the final 6–3, 6–1, against Alexandros Georgoudas.
Hsieh Cheng-peng and Yang Tsung-hua were the defending champions, but only Cheng-peng participated this year. He partnered with Francis Casey Alcantara and won the final 6–4, 6–2, over Mikhail Biryukov and Yasutaka Uchiyama.
The men's singles tennis event of the 2011 Pan American Games was held from October 17–22 at the Telcel Tennis Complex in Guadalajara. The defending Pan American Games champion was Flávio Saretta of Brazil.
Great Britain's Andy Murray defeated Switzerland's Roger Federer in the final, 6–2, 6–1, 6–4 to win the gold medal in men's singles tennis at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The final was a rematch of the Wimbledon final played at the same venue four weeks prior, in which Federer prevailed. Federer was attempting to become the third man to complete the career Golden Slam in singles. It was Federer's third consecutive Olympics as the singles world No. 1, but his silver finish remains his only Olympic medal in singles. In the bronze medal match, Argentina's Juan Martín del Potro defeated Serbia's Novak Djokovic, 7–5, 6–4. Murray's gold was Great Britain's first medal at the event since 1908, and the nation's record fourth overall. Federer's silver was Switzerland's first medal at the event since 1992. Del Potro's bronze was Argentina's first medal at the event overall.
The United States' Serena Williams defeated Russia's Maria Sharapova in the final, 6–0, 6–1 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Both finalists were attempting to become the second woman to complete the career Golden Slam in singles. Williams won the gold without losing a set, without losing more than three games in any set, and without losing more than five games in any match. Her serve was broken only once during the tournament. She also became the first tennis player to complete the career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles. It was the United States' first victory in the event since Serena's sister Venus Williams won in 2000, and its fifth gold overall. In the bronze medal match, Belarus' Victoria Azarenka defeated Russia's Maria Kirilenko, 6–3, 6–4.
The men's singles tennis event of the 2015 Pan American Games was held from July 10–15 at the Canadian Tennis Centre in Toronto, Canada.
Puerto Rico's Monica Puig defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber in the final, 6–4, 4–6, 6–1 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2016 Summer Olympics. It was Puerto Rico's first Olympic gold medal, and Puig became the first unseeded female player to win the Olympic tennis gold medal. In the bronze medal match, the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitová defeated the United States' Madison Keys 7–5, 2–6, 6–2. It was Germany's first medal in women's singles since 1992 and the Czech Republic's first since 1996.
Switzerland's Belinda Bencic defeated the Czech Republic's Markéta Vondroušová in the final, 7–5, 2–6, 6–3, to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was Switzerland's first victory in the women's singles. In the bronze medal match, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina defeated Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, 1–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–4. It was Ukraine's first Olympic tennis medal.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated Dominic Thiem in the final, 6–4, 4–6, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4 to win the men's singles title at the 2020 Australian Open. It was his record-extending eighth Australian Open title and 17th major singles title overall. With the win, Djokovic also regained the world No. 1 singles ranking. Thiem became the first Austrian player to reach an Australian Open singles final. This was Thiem's third major singles final loss in as many attempts. The match also marked the first time Djokovic came back to win in a major final after trailing two sets to one, having lost each of the last seven times this happened.
Germany's Alexander Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov of the Russian Olympic Committee in the final, 6–3, 6–1, to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was both countries' first medals at the event since 2000, and Germany's first victory. In the bronze medal match, Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta defeated Serbia's Novak Djokovic, 6–4, 6–7(6–8), 6–3.

Tommy Paul defeated the defending champion, Denis Shapovalov, in the final, 6–4, 2–6, 6–4, to win the singles title at the 2021 Stockholm Open. This was Paul's first ATP Tour title.
