Terence McLaughlin (born 1956) is a Canadian sailor and Olympics silver medallist. [1]
McLaughlin was born July 24, 1956, in Toronto, Ontario to Paul McLaughlin and his wife Mary. His father [1] competed in the 1948 Olympic dinghy regatta. [2] He attended St. Michael's College School and then majored in economics at Queen's University. [3]
In 1980 McLaughlin and his crew Evert Bastet won the 1980 World Championship in the Flying Dutchman class. [4]
McLaughlin won a silver medal in the Flying Dutchman Class at the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics with Evert Bastet. He wished to have competed in the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics but was unable due to the boycott of the event by western countries. [1]
McLaughlin unsuccessfully helmed Canada One in the 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup [1] that determined the challenger for the America's Cup.
McLaughlin won the York Cup match-racing series five times [3]
McLaughlin skippered yachts named Reliant (owned by Paul James Phelan) and Defiant (owned by Paul L'Heureux), out of RCYC, to win the 2001, 2003, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Canada's Cup. [5] [6] [7]

McLaughlin skippered the Royal Canadian Yacht Club Swan 42 yacht Daring owned by John Hele, with crew comprising navigator Allan Megarry, mainsail trimmer David Jarvis, jib trimmer Andrew McTavish, offside jib trimmer and strategist John Millen, boat captain and pitman Jim Gibson, spinnaker trimmer Rob Gale, mastman Will Gyles and bowman Sandy Andrews [11] to win the 2011 [12] [13] and 2013 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cups and the 2013 Swan 42 National Championships. McLaughlin and his crew Sandy Andrews, David Ogden, and David Jarvis [16] won the J24 silver medal at the XVII Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015. [17]
McLaughlin helmed an 8 Metre yacht Bangalore (owned by Meuring/Howard) in 3 World 8 Metre championships. In 2010 he and his team were second in the 8 Metre Worlds. In 2016 he won the 8-Metre Worlds and Sira Cups with a team comprising Geoff Moore, Shannon Howard, Bart Meuring, Jeff Gillmeister, Robb Graham and Jason Williams as crew. In 2017 he placed third in the Sira Division of the 8 Metre World Championships in Norway with team comprising John Millen (sailor), Shannon Howard, Bart Meuring, Jeff Gillmeister, Robb Graham, Geoff Moore and Sandy Andrews. In a J105 - Mandate, co-owned by McLaughlin and Rod Wilmer, he skippered Mandate to win the J105 North American Championships with crews, which have included Rod Wilmer, Graham Hicks, Fraser Howell, Evert McLaughlin and John Millen in 2014, 2016 and 2018. [21] [22]
The International 2.4mR is a one-person keelboat. The class is a development class governed by the 2.4mR rule. The rule controlled by World Sailing is one of the few classes designated as an International Class. The International 2.4mR Class rule is closely related to the International 12mR class rule that was used at the America's Cup.
The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) is a private social club and yacht club based in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1844 by nine prominent sportsmen. The members have contributed to the sport of yachting and yacht design. As of 2001, the organization was reported to have about 3,000 members. Membership in the club is by invitation only. The Dragon is a one-design keelboat designed by Norwegian Johan Anker in 1929. In 1948 the Dragon became an Olympic Class, a status it retained until the Munich Olympics in 1972. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC) is a private yacht club in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1852, it is one of the world's older and larger yacht clubs. Its summer home is on a trio of islands in the Toronto Islands. Its winter home since 1984 has been a purpose-built clubhouse located at 141 St. George Street in Toronto, which includes facilities for sports and social activities. In 2014, the club had approximately 4700 members, about 450 yachts and a number of dinghies, principally International 14s.
The International Six Metre class is a class of classic racing yachts. Sixes are a construction class, meaning that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formula, in this case International rule. At their heyday, Sixes were the most important international yacht racing class, and they are still raced around the world. "Six metre" in class name does not, somewhat confusingly, refer to length of the boat, but product of the formula; 6mR boats are, on average, 10–11 metres long.

Jennifer J. Isler, best known as J. J. Isler and also known by her maiden name of J. J. Fetter, is an American yachtswoman. She is a two-time Olympic medalist and a world sailing champion. She was a starting helmsman in the 1995 America's Cup races. A pioneer in the sport of women's sailing, in 2005 she was the first woman inducted into the Sailing World Hall of Fame and in 2015, she was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
Frank Joseph McLaughlin is a Canadian sailor and three time Olympian. Frank was a three time Canadian under 20 Youth Champion and placed 8,9 and 5th in the World Youth Championships from 1977 to 1979. Frank won the International 14 World Championship in 1981 with John Millen in Annapolis Maryland. Frank and John placed 3rd in the 1986 Flying Dutchman World Championships in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and 2nd in the 1986 European Championships in Yugoslavia. Frank won a bronze medal in the Flying Dutchman Class at the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea with John Millen. He also finished 9th in the same category at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Frank placed 15th at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the 470 class with Martin Ten hove. Frank and Martin won a bronze medal in the 470 class at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas Venezuela. Frank's father Paul was a two time Olympian and represented Canada in the Firefly class at the 1948 Olympics in Torquay England, and in the Finn class at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki Finland. Frank's brother Terry won a silver medal in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles with Evert Bastett.

Paul James McLaughlin was a Canadian sailor. He competed at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics in single-person dinghy and finished fifth and eighth, respectively. At both Games he was the captain and manager of the Canadian sailing teams. In 1977 he was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
