The Texas Winter League (TWL) was an independent instructional baseball league based in San Antonio, Texas, operating annually from 2012 to 2014. It provided opportunities for players returning from injury, free agents seeking contracts, and prospects looking to sign their first professional deal.
During its final season in 2014, 62 players signed professional contracts with teams in leagues such as the United League, American Association, and Frontier League. [1]
In 2013, 47 players were similarly signed to professional contracts across independent leagues including the Atlantic League. [1]
Founded in 2012, the Texas Winter League operated as a showcase for free agents and players seeking to re-enter professional baseball. The league ran for three seasons before folding in 2014.
Managers who participated in TWL and its affiliated summer league included several former Major League Baseball (MLB) players and coaches such as Jose Canseco, Ozzie Canseco, Von Hayes, Mike Marshall, Rusty Meacham, Dan Firova, and Greg Tagert. Other notable coaches included Jorge Alvarez, Brooks Carey, Chris Carminucci, Eddie Dennis, Orv Franchuk, John Harris, Pete LaCock, Les Lancaster, Scott "Nate" Nathanson, and Chris Paterson. [2]
The league featured six teams based in San Antonio. Games were primarily used for scouting and player development rather than competitive standings.
Despite its short lifespan, the TWL helped launch or revive the careers of numerous players in independent leagues across the United States.
