The Baseball Champions League Americas, or BCL Americas, is an annual international baseball tournament organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). It is contested by the champion teams of various leagues in North America and the Caribbean, similar to the Caribbean Series (which is not WBSC-sanctioned).

It is played as a single round-robin tournament, with the first and second-place teams playing against each other in a final championship game. [1] The tournament began as a four-team invitational, but is expected to expand to an eight-team league format by 2028. [2]

The inaugural tournament was held in 2023 in Mérida, Mexico. [3] It was won by the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association. [4]

History

The first edition of the tournament was held from was held from 28 September to 1 October 2023 in the Parque Kukulcán Alamo, in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, organized by WBSC Americas. The competition was sanctioned by WBSC and the Mexican League and featured four teams from Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and the United States. [5] [6]

The 2024 championship was cancelled. The second edition of the tournament was supposed to be held in the Estadio de Béisbol Hermanos Serdán in Puebla, Mexico, home of the Pericos de Puebla, the 2023 Mexican League Champion. [7]

On 10 December 2024, it was announced that the tournament would resume in 2025 with the 2025 Baseball Champions League Americas being held from 8 to 13 April in the Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City, home of the Diablos Rojos del México. The competition will feature the Diablos Rojos, winners of the 2024 Mexican League season, plus the 2024 champions of Cuba, Curaçao, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the United States. After debuting in 2023, Colombia will not return for the 2025 tournament, while Curaçao, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico will make their debut in the Baseball Champions League Americas. [8]

Participants

While the Caribbean Series is generally limited to Latin American winter league teams, BCL Americas includes the champions of the top-level independent (i.e. not affiliated with Major League Baseball) summer leagues in Mexico and the United States. [a]

Cuba and Colombia had previously participated in the Caribbean Series, but both were dropped after the 2023 edition of the tournament. [9] [10]

The following is the qualification system and qualified athletes, countries and teams for the Baseball at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games competitions. As the host nation, El Salvador qualifies a team with 24 athletes automatically. The WBSC ranking determined the next four as of the December 31, 2022 release: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Venezuela. The top two non-qualified finishers of the Caribbean Baseball Cup, Bahamas 2022 (COCABE) will receive their quota automatically, which are Puerto Rico and Curaçao. The highest non-qualified finisher of the 2023 Centroamericano de Beisbol received the last slot, which is Nicaragua.

The Intercontinental Professional Baseball Series was a planned international club tournament to be contested by winter league professional baseball teams, as an alternative to the Caribbean Series. The first edition was scheduled to take place in from January 26 to February 1, 2024, in Barranquilla, Colombia, but was ultimately cancelled.

The Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation, or CPBC, is the body responsible for organizing the Caribbean Series, an annual club baseball tournament contested by the winter league baseball champions of the Caribbean and Latin American region. Four professional winter leagues are full members of the CPBC, and various others have been invited to participate in the tournament. It also administers the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Mexican Softball League (LMS) (Spanish: Liga Mexicana de Softbol) is a professional softball league in Mexico. The LMS was established in September 2023 and started its first official season in January 2024. The league is affiliated to the Mexican League; all of the participant teams are softball sections of the Mexican League baseball teams. The LMS is the first professional softball league in Mexico and Latin America.

The 2002 Mexican League season was the 78th season in the history of the Mexican League. It was contested by sixteen teams evenly divided into two zones: North and South. The season began on 20 March and ended on 1 September with the last game of the Serie del Rey. Diablos Rojos del México won its 13th championship after defeating Tigres de la Angelópolis in the Serie del Rey 4 games to 3, led by manager Bernie Tatis.

The 2024 Mexican League season was the 99th season in the history of the baseball Mexican League (LMB). The league is contested by 20 teams, evenly divided in North and South zones. The season started on 11 April with the series between the defending champions Pericos de Puebla and Diablos Rojos del México and ended on 9 September with the last game of the Serie del Rey, where the Diablos Rojos del México defeated the Sultanes de Monterrey to win the championship.

The Serie de las Américas is a planned international professional baseball tournament contested by winter league professional baseball teams in Latin America. Envisioend as an alternative to the Caribbean Series, the first edition is scheduled to take place from January 24 to 30, 2025, in Nicaragua
