The Affiliated Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University is a Chinese institution for study and treatment in the fields of Ophthalmology and Optometry. The hospital was founded in 1998 in Zhejiang Province of the People's Republic of China. [1] [2] [3] The institute collaborates with the New England College of Optometry to offer a Joint MS/OD Degree of optometry and ophthalmology, in which participating students undertake clinical practice both in Wenzhou and Boston. [4] The hospital is associated with national government programs including the Optometry Research Center (Ministry of Public Health), the key laboratory for visual science (Ministry of Health) and the National key lab, Optometry and Ophthalmology, and Vision Science (Ministry of Science and technology). Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in ophthalmology. The credentials include a degree in medicine, followed by additional four to five years of ophthalmology residency training. Ophthalmology residency training programs may require a one year pre-residency training in internal medicine, pediatrics, or general surgery. Additional specialty training may be sought in a particular aspect of eye pathology. Ophthalmologists are allowed to use medications to treat eye diseases, implement laser therapy, and perform surgery when needed. Ophthalmologists may participate in academic research on the diagnosis and treatment for eye disorders.
Optometry is a health care profession that involves examining the eyes and applicable visual systems for defects or abnormalities as well as the medical diagnosis and management of eye disease.
The Chinese Journal of Optometry & Ophthalmology, published since 1999, is a bimonthly journal, co-sponsored by China National Optometry Research Center and Wenzhou Medical College. It is the only academic journal of optometry in China. [6]

Fan Lu is a Chinese professor and Vice President of optometry at the Wenzhou Medical College from which she graduated in 1986. After graduation she became a resident in the field of ophthalmology at the Affiliated Eye Hospital of which she became a Vice Director as well. During the same time she was a Vice Director of the China National Optometry Research Center and in 2002 got her optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry. Currently she works as an eye surgeon and has at least five publications related to contact lenses.
