The Archers were an American contemporary Christian music group. They were originally brothers Tim and Steve Archer, Fred Satterfield, Nancye Short and Billy Rush Masters. After Masters and Short departed in 1977, sister Janice Archer joined. They enjoyed greater longevity than most of the pioneering CCM artists, recording chart hits in the decades of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. [1] Their hits included, "Jesus Is The Answer", "Little Flowers", "It Wouldn't Be Enough" (Aldridge), [2] "Fresh Surrender", "Stand Up!", and "Heaven In Your Eyes". [3] Former Maranatha! Music artist and CCM pioneer Erick Nelson defined The Archers' role in the development of contemporary Christian music as representing one-half of a convergence: traditional vocal groups like The Archers got hipper while the hippie rock groups (like the Maranatha bands) got more mellow—eventually both evinced the polished, commercial sound that would be identified as stereotypical contemporary Christian music. Growing up the sons of a pastor in the San Joaquin Valley of northern California, Tim and Steve Archer began singing in their father's church during their childhood. Eventually they branched out to other churches in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the mid-1960s they spent their summers touring with their older brother Gary as the gospel trio, "The Archer Bros." This was a pivotal period in the group's evolution to what eventually became known as contemporary Christian music, since it was the first time they began to incorporate their own electric accompaniment, a rare introduction to evangelical Christian music of the time. [5] In 1966, Tim and Steve entered a talent search contest and placed second nationally. [6] In 1967 with both Tim and Gary playing guitar they began an evolution toward an even more Contemporary sound. Before long (with Gary moving into artist management), they took on additional personnel, drummer Fred Satterfied and guitarist and songwriter Billy Rush Masters and Steve Smart then later adding vocalist Nancye Short after Smart's departure, taking the name The Archers. [7]
By 1971, they were performing in churches and Jesus festivals throughout Southern California with other Christian artists, and came to the attention of Andrae Crouch and Light Records’ chief, Ralph Carmichael. [8] With Masters writing many of the early songs, including Fresh Surrender, the group collaborated on vocal arrangements and a new sound, previously unheard of in evangelical circles began to emerge. As Jesus music began to gain a stronger foothold in North America, [9] they came into contact with Pat Boone, eventually touring with him. [10] In the spring of 1972, they went into TTG Studios in Hollywood, California to record their first album, Any Day Now , with Gary producing for their independent "Charisma Records" label. Its release coincided with the group's performance at EXPLO '72 in Dallas, Texas with over a quarter million people in attendance. [11] Masters penned most of the songs for the album including "God's Love", "Put On Jesus", and "For Me, For You". [12] The album also included two songs written by their friend, Andrae Crouch, entitled "It Won’t Be Long" and "Jesus is the Answer". [13] Both "God's Love" and "Jesus Is The Answer" became Number One hits in the U.S. and Canada. [14]
In 1973, the J.T. Benson Company of Nashville, Tennessee bought Charisma re-releasing the album on its Impact Records imprint as The Archers . By this time The Archers included a full support band with Tim Jacquette (bass), Tim Johnson (keyboards) and Tim Short (drums) all of whom had played on the first album and in earlier concert appearances. [15] With an increasing national profile, the group continued to expand their schedule, appearing in churches and larger concert venues nationwide and Canada. In 1974, they recorded their second and last album for Impact, Keep Singin' That Love Song with Bob MacKenzie producing. [16] Nancye Short contributed heavily to the project, writing and co-writing "Children", "Truth, Peace and Joy", and "He Love's You". Dannie Lee Stutzman, leader of the Jesus band, Danny Lee and The Children of Truth, penned other songs including "Keep Singing That Love Song" and the Number One hit "Little Flowers". [17] Andrae Crouch contributed a tune specifically for the project, "He Washed My Sins Away." [18] The album received critical praise and widespread airplay, laying the foundation for their move to Ralph Carmichael's Light Records.
By 1975, they had appeared at virtually every significant Jesus festival in the U.S. and Canada, and completed an extensive European tour. [8] In June of that year they released their first Light album, The Archers: Things We Deeply Feel . The album produced a number of chart hits [19] including Masters’, "Giver of Life" and "Music", Andrae Crouches "Lord You've Been Good To Me", "I'm With Jesus", and the CCM Number One hit, "It Wouldn’t Be Enough" (Aldridge). [20] The song went on to be covered by a number of other artists. [18] As their profile grew the group's album sales increased and they began to headline larger venues, including main stage performances at Disneyland's "Night of Joy". [21] In late 1976, after returning from a tour of South Africa they entered the studio again teamed with arranger and Elvis Presley TCB Band alumnus, Larry Muhoberac to record their second LP for Light. [22] With the departure of Billy Masters and Nancye Short (who participated on background vocals), Janice Archer assumed the role of female lead. The group reemerged with a dramatically changed look and sound on the 1977 release of the GMA Dove Award nominated, Fresh Surrender . [23] The album, their best selling to that date, produced seven back-to-back hits, including, Masters' title track and "I Need You" and Short's, "I'm Gonna Rise", "Make Me An Instrument", and "With Every Breath I Take" (Aldridge). [24] Both Tim and Steve made their first venture into composing, co-penning the soul single, "Water Into Wine" and Steve's "Sanctified Life." [25] The year 1978 brought the new lineup to a performance at the White House for President Jimmy Carter. [7] Returning to the studio late that year, the group again teamed with Muhoberac, this time as co-producer (with John Guess), for the critically acclaimed, Stand Up. [26] Tim and Steve again contributed tracks with two top ten hits, the title song co-written by Steve, and Tim's "Pickin’ Up The Pieces". [27] Other tracks included "Fools Paradise", Kelly Willard's, "Blame It On The One I Love", "Living In Your Love" (later covered by TG Shepard), and "Only His Love" (Aldridge).
In 1980, The Archers released their only live album, Celebrate – Live , recorded en-the-round at one of America's first mega-churches, "Melodyland Christian Center" in Southern California. Rick Riso, formerly of the CCM group, "Messenger", wrote the title song and they performed a decade of previous hits. [28] Another career highpoint came in 1981, when they performed on the 1980 Grammy Awards telecast, winning a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary or Inspirational for their contribution to Reba Rambo and Dony McGuire's The Lord's Prayer. They sang on the telecast again the next year, nominated in the same category for Spreadin' Like Wildfire , also produced by McGuire. In 1982, with opening act Bryan Duncan, they were the first contemporary Christian band to perform at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. The performance was sold out. [29] The anniversary year of their first decade as recording artists also brought the release of The Archers: At Their Very Best a compilation of their most popular Light tracks. Billboard Magazine reviewed the release saying, "This collection of the Archers' popular songs of the past decade proves their versatility, covering mainstream pop, light jazz and near-choral arrangements. The retrospective finds several tunes holding up well over the years, including 'It Wouldn't Be Enough,' 'Picking up the Pieces' the soothing 'Music,' and the popular 'Make Me an Instrument.' " [30] In 1984, The Archers released their last album for the now struggling Light Records, All Systems Are Go , which became a catalyst—along with their earlier Grammy win—for their 1985 television show by that name on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). Following a five-year recording hiatus, with each working on solo projects (as well as doing several Archer performances a year) in 1991, the group returned to the studio for, Colors of Your Love , this time on the Reunion label. Their last project as a group, the CD is distinctive in that all of its songs with the exception of "Music (All Around The World)" were penned by outside writers. Still, the project spawned the CCM hits with the title song and "Be Our Guest". [31] The Archers toured in support through 1994, when they disbanded. In 1992 at Canyon Hills Assembly of God in Bakersfield, California at a concert during the "Colors of your Love" tour, Gary Archer was in the audience and was asked to come up on stage to perform with Tim and Steve, "The Archer Bros" performed a couple of songs together.
The Archers maintained a full touring band for the first fifteen years of their career. The core band for both their tour and recording bands included lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. [32] Tim Archer played rhythm guitar [33] and Billy Rush Masters played lead. [34] Nancye Short played piano as well. In a genre known for poor recording production standards [35] they were known for creating well produced albums. [36] They used top musicians, which held true with their touring and recording bands [37] which included some of the best known in West Coast recording history. [38] Although personnel changes occurred in the tour band, a number of members remained for long periods and some went on to prominent careers. Christian rock is a form of rock music that features lyrics focusing on matters of Christian faith, often with an emphasis on Jesus, typically performed by self-proclaimed Christian individuals. The extent to which their lyrics are explicitly Christian varies between bands. Many bands who perform Christian rock have ties to the contemporary Christian music labels, media outlets, and festivals, while other bands are independent.
The Choir is an atmospheric Christian alternative rock band currently comprising Derri Daugherty on guitar and vocals, Steve Hindalong on drums, and Dan Michaels on saxophone and lyricon. Long-time bassist Tim Chandler died in 2018, and guitarist Marc Byrd was the fifth member of the band between 2005–2014. As of 2022, the band has released 16 full-length studio albums, three EPs, five live albums, one single-disc compilation, one retrospective box set, and is still actively recording new material.
DC Talk is a Christian rap and rock trio. The group was formed at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1987 by Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max Smith. They released five major studio albums together: DC Talk (1989), Nu Thang (1990), Free at Last (1992), Jesus Freak (1995), and Supernatural (1998). In 2002, the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music called DC Talk "the most popular overtly Christian act of all time."
Servant was a Christian rock group that grew out of the counter-culture Jesus Movement of the sixties and seventies. The band was founded in Victoria, British Columbia in 1976 by Jim Palosaari and performed to audiences throughout North America, Europe and Australia for over 12 years. Originally named "Higher Ground", the group later changed their name to Servant. The lyrics of their songs were known for challenging the Christian Church to turn back to social justice and caring for the poor.
Sonicflood is an American contemporary worship music band from Nashville, Tennessee, that has been touted as "The Fathers of the Modern Worship Movement." The group took the name "Sonicflood", a reference to a line in the Book of Revelation, chapter 19, verse 6.
Voices in Shadows is the first studio album by Christian alternative rock band the Choir, released in 1985.
Shades of Gray is the second studio release, and first EP, by Christian alternative rock band the Choir, released in 1986. All five songs were later included as bonus tracks on the CD release for Chase the Kangaroo.
Diamonds and Rain is the third studio release, and second full-length studio album, from Christian alternative rock band the Choir, released in 1986. It is the first release under the band's new moniker after dropping "Youth" from their name.
Speckled Bird is the eighth studio release, and seventh full-length studio album, from Christian alternative rock band the Choir, released in 1994. The album is largely a remixed and reworked version of the independent Kissers and Killers project with an additional five tracks.
Love Song was one of the most prominent Jesus music bands, and one of the first Christian rock bands. They released two studio albums—Love Song (1972) and Final Touch (1974)—and one live album—Feel the Love (1977)—before disbanding. They subsequently released Welcome Back in 1994, remastered versions of the three early albums and Love Song: The Book of Love as a box set in 2010.
Steve Archer is an American singer-songwriter and producer. He is a pioneer of the genre of Jesus music, later to become known as contemporary Christian music. He is the former lead singer of the Archers, a contemporary Christian music and Jesus music band who toured and recorded throughout the decades of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
The Archers was the first nationally released major label album for The Archers. Originally released as Any Day Now in 1972 on their independent Charisma Records label, it garnered the group almost immediate national attention and launched them on to the national stage. Issued before radio charts for Jesus music or Contemporary Christian music were established, it included the hits, "Life In Jesus", "Jesus Is The Answer" and "God's Love".
Things We Deeply Feel the fourth album release for The Archers and their first release for the West Coast’s powerful CCM franchise, Light Records. The record company went all out for the project, bringing in some of Hollywood’s top studio players, including several Steely Dan alumni. Released before national charts were created, it spawned several top airplay list hits, including the #1 “It Wouldn’t Be Enough”.
Fresh Surrender was The Archers fourth studio album and third Light Records release. It and its title song were nominated for a Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Award, and claimed an astounding seven airplay hits for the Jesus music stars. Perhaps more importantly it signaled a marked change for the band, both in sound and appearance. It was recorded on the departure of two founding-members, Billy Rush Masters, who wrote the song “Fresh Surrender” and Nancye Short-Tsapralis who had been linchpins in the creation of the group’s sound and writing team for six years. Now a trio with sister, Janice Archer, who had been traveling with the combo for some time, The Archers took off in a new direction that would define them for the rest of their career. The project was arranged by Elvis Presley's original TCB Band keyboardist, Larry Muhoberac who went on to co-produce The Archers' next album, Stand Up! also released by Light Records. Once again, the band was joined in the studio by an elite group of Los Angeles recording musicians, including Steely Dan alumni Ben Benay, Dean Parks, Lee Ritenour, Wilton Felder, David Hungate, Mike Baird, and Jim Keltner.
Stand Up! was The Archers fifth studio album and fourth Light Records release. It was co-produced by Elvis Presley’s TCB Band keyboardist Larry Muhoberac and studio engineer John Guess.
Keep Singin' That Love Song was The Archers first major label album. Impact Records re-released their independent recording, The Archers, a year earlier and sent master producer Bob MacKenzie to the West Coast for the new project. The album included the Number One hit, “Little Flowers” and “Jesus, He Is The Son Of God”. Paul Revere and The Raiders’ arranger, Bobby Sisco who would meet an untimely death during the recording of the group’s Things We Deeply Feel project one year later, arranged the album’s rhythm and orchestration. Musicians included Derek and the Dominos’ drummer Jim Gordon and Steely Dan regular Ben Benay. The Archers moved on to Ralph Carmichael’s Light Records shortly after its release, where they would remain for most of the following decade.
Billy Rush Masters was an American composer, and rock guitarist. He is best known as a songwriter and founding member of the pioneering Jesus music and contemporary Christian music band, the Archers between 1970 and 1977. His hits included “God’s Love,” “Thank You Lord Jesus,” “Music ,” “Brand New Day,” and “Fresh Surrender,” which was nominated for a GMA Dove Award in 1977.
Andrus, Blackwood & Company was a racially integrated Contemporary Christian Music group, releasing six albums between 1977 and 1984. The group was composed of two former members of The Imperials, Sherman Andrus and Terry Blackwood as co-lead vocalists. Rounding out the group's first touring band in 1977 were Rocky Laughlin on bass, Tim Marsh on drums, Bob Villareal on guitar and backing vocals, and Karen Voegtlin on keyboards and backing vocals. Other alternating band members between 1978 and 1986 included Billy Blackwood on drums, John Mays on bass, Mark Hughes on bass (later with Dobie Gray and owner the world's largest used music store, Mr Mark's Music in Nashville, Jeff Chambers on guitars, Randy Dennis on keyboards, David Ennis on keyboards, Gerritt Wilson on Synths, David Hassell on keyboards and vocals, Mark Burchfield on bass. David Hassell also worked as office manager and tour manager for the group. The group's final performance came in June 1986 at Six Flags theme park in Chicago, IL.
Highlands is the ninth album by the Christian rock band White Heart and the band's last album with Star Song Records. The album was released and just coming off the singles that were from their Grammy nominated album Tales of Wonder (1992) as well as touring. Highlands was produced by White Heart founders Mark Gersmehl and Billy Smiley with Darrell A. Harris as executive producer. The first radio single "Once and for All" topped the Christian CHR/Pop chart and features members of the 1990's female Christian rock group Rachel Rachel near towards the end of the song. A music video was made for the album's third radio single "Heaven of My Heart". The album peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.
Redemption is the eleventh and, to date, final studio album by the Christian rock band White Heart. It is their second and final album on Curb Records. Following the departures of lead guitarist Brian Wooten, bass guitarist John Thorn and drummer/percussionist Jon Knox and following up their 1995 album Inside, the group is now reduced to the trio of lead singer Rick Florian and White Heart founders Billy Smiley and Mark Gersmehl and has once again stylized as Whiteheart for this album. The trio has brought in studio musician friends to fill in the rhythm section and have made what critics are calling a redefining album. Redemption is produced by Smiley and Gersmehl with production assistance by Richie Biggs. The album debuted and peaked at number 33 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.
