The Backrooms is an upcoming American science fiction horror film directed by Kane Parsons, in his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Roberto Patino and Will Soodik. It is based upon the urban legend and creepypasta of the same name that was made into Parsons' YouTube series Backrooms . The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.
The Backrooms is scheduled to be released in the United States by A24.
After her patient disappears into a strange dimension beyond reality, a therapist is forced to brave the unknown in order to bring him back alive. [1]
On January 7, 2022, Kane Parsons began uploading a video series, titled Backrooms onto his YouTube channel Kane Pixels; the concept being loosely based on the internet urban legend/creepypasta, the Backrooms. [2] In February 2023, a film adaptation was announced as a joint production between A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment, with Parsons directing and Roberto Patino writing. In May 2025, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti entered negotiations to star in the film. [4] Ejiofor would be confirmed the following month, with Will Soodik writig the latest draft, and Milioti's deal ultimately falling through; Renate Reinsve would be cast in her place. [5] Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia would be added to the cast in July. [6]
Principal photography began on July 7, 2025 in Vancouver, Canada under the working title of Effigy, [7] wrapping on August 14, 2025. [8]
The Backrooms is set to be released in the United States by A24. [3]
