The Best Man is the third mini-album by South Korean recording artist Wheesung. It was released on May 12, 2014, under YMC Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. The record is the first release following the completion of his military service.
An extended play record, often referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally contain a minimum of four tracks and maximum of six tracks, and are considered "less expensive and time-consuming" for an artist to produce than an album. An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well.
Choi Whee-sung, better known by his stage name Wheesung, is a South Korean R&B singer, record producer, and musical theatre actor. In 2017, Wheesung set up an independent label called Realslow Company, and also promotes under another stage name Realslow.
Military service is service by an individual or group in an army or other militia, whether as a chosen job or as a result of an involuntary draft (conscription).
Following a series of photo and video teasers, The Best Man and the lead single "Night and Day" were simultaneously released; the mini-album debuted and peaked at number four on the Gaon Album Chart. Wheesung promoted the record on music chart programs across television networks by performing the single, which earned him one music show win on MBC Music's Show Champion .
Gaon Album Chart, part of Gaon Music Chart, is a national chart that ranks the best-selling albums, including mini and single albums, in South Korea, provided by the Korea Music Content Industry Association. It has been tracking sales since the beginning of 2010 and launched in February the same year as part of the Gaon Music Chart. The charts are made up of charts tracking domestic album sales, international album sales and a combined overall album sales in weekly, monthly and year-end format.
MBC Music is a South Korean specialty television channel owned by MBC Plus Media. The cable channel primarily broadcasts programming related to music.
Show Champion is a South Korean music television program that broadcasts live every Wednesday 6:00 p.m. KST at Bitmaru Broadcasting Center in Ilsan by MBC Music. It is hosted by comedian Kim Shin-young, and various guest MCs.
Wheesung was subject to conscription in South Korea and enlisted for military service on November 7, 2011. [1] As 2012 came to a close, it was reported that he became subject to an investigation for abusing propofol. The Chuncheon District Prosecutor`s Office denied summoning Wheesung to investigate any substance abuse. [2] Shortly before completing his service, Wheesung was hospitalized after sustaining spinal disc herniation and developing alopecia areata. In midst of his stay, he utilized his mobile phone without permission; he spent three days in military prison for breaching regulations. [3] He completed his service and discharged on August 9, 2013. [4]
Conscription in South Korea has existed since 1957 and requires male citizens between the ages of 18 and 28 to perform in the army compulsory military service. Women are not required to perform military service, but may voluntarily enlist.
Propofol, marketed as Diprivan among other names, is a short-acting medication that results in a decreased level of consciousness and lack of memory for events. Its uses include the starting and maintenance of general anesthesia, sedation for mechanically ventilated adults, and procedural sedation. It is also used for status epilepticus if other medications have not worked. It is given by injection into a vein. Maximum effect takes about two minutes to occur and it typically lasts five to ten minutes.
Chuncheon is the capital of Gangwon Province in South Korea. The city lies in the north of the county, located in a basin formed by the Soyang River and Han River. There are some large lakes around the city, most notably Lake Soyang and Lake Uiam. The area is renowned for its small river islands, such as Sangjungdo, Ha-Jungdo, Bungeodo and Wido.
Musically, The Best Man is an R&B record. [5] It opens with "Best Man", a "rhythmical" track where he sings his desires as a man as opposed to a singer. "I Like the Song" begins with the tune of a "tranquil" piano. [6] "Night and Day" is an R&B and pop song accompanied by an electric guitar. [7] [8] "Lying Beside You" describes the "fluttering" feeling of loving a woman. Previously released two years prior, "A Masterpiece Called You" was remastered for inclusion on the mini-album; Wheesung creates a "romantic atmosphere" and utilizes a figure of speech to describe the "masterpiece" of loving a person. A breakup song, "I Don't Want to Know" details the feeling of loneliness. "I Need to Make Money" is a slow-tempo track where Wheesung reveals his concern of earning profit as a musician. [6]

On March 31, 2014, it was revealed that Wheesung was scheduled to release a mini-album in May. [7] The release date announced was May 12, two years and five months since They Are Coming (2011). [9] It was unclear if Wheesung would pursue a promotional cycle for The Best Man in light of the sinking of MV Sewol the previous month. [10]
They Are Coming is the second mini-album by South Korean recording artist Wheesung. It was released on October 10, 2011, under YMC Entertainment and distributed by CJ E&M Music. The record served as the final release before the singer enlisted in military service.
The sinking of MVSewol, also referred to as the Sewol Ferry Disaster, occurred on the morning of 16 April 2014, when the passenger/ro-ro ferry was en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The South Korean ferry sank while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 Korea Standard Time. In total, 304 passengers and crew members died in the disaster. Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes after the South Korean coast guard.
A "night version" photo teaser for The Best Man was revealed on May 8. [11] A "day version" was posted on the following day. [12] The music video teaser for "Night and Day", which features cameos by Yura of Girl's Day and C.A.P of Teen Top, was uploaded on the next day. [13] The mini-album and the music video for the lead single were simultaneously released on May 12. [8]

Girl's Day (Hangul: 걸스데이) is a South Korean girl group formed by Dream Tea Entertainment in 2010. The group currently consists of four members: Sojin, Minah, Yura and Hyeri. Members Jisun and Jiin officially left the group in 2010, while Jihae left in late 2012.

Wheesung began promoting "Night and Day" by performing the song on weekly music chart shows upon release. [8] He first performed on MBC Music's Show Champion , the program's first episode to resume regular broadcasting following the Sewol incident. [14] He followed up with a performance on Seoul Broadcasting System's (SBS) Inkigayo . [15] The following week, Wheesung ranked first on Show Champion, which earned the single its first and only music show win. [16] He continued performing the following days on Mnet's M Countdown [17] and Arirang's Simply K-Pop . [18]
Writing for online magazine IZM , Kim Ban-ya rated The Best Man three and a half stars out of five, complimenting "Night and Day" for its "grandeur" and "dramatic" rise in scale. [19] Also rating the mini-album three stars out of five, Oh Lee of Rhythmer felt that Wheesung accomplished to "upgrade" himself, describing the album as a reflection of the singer due to the "personal sensitivity" of the lyrics. [20] Jung Hae-wook of News Tomtato gave the musicality of the record a full five stars, while awarding it three for its appeal and experimentation. He named "I Need to Make Money" the best track on the record aside from the lead single. [6]
On the chart dated May 11–17, 2014, The Best Man debuted at number four on the Gaon Album Chart. [21] By the end of the month, the mini-album sold 6,102 copies in South Korea. [22]
