The Block Party Series is a Nigerian urban music event held monthly since January 2018, first in Lagos, until the 2020 pandemic. The Mainland BlockParty [1] is on the last Sunday of the month except for the anniversary edition on 1 January. Island BlockParty is on 24 December. Its block party series includes Capital BlockParty, Gold BlockParty, Garden BlockParty, and Premier BlockParty.

History

The Block Party Series is organized by Tobi Mohammed of The Top-Boy Firm, Moyo Shomade of TASH Studios NG, Bizzle Osikoya, and Asa Asika of The Plug. [2] It has partnered with MTV Base, [3] Spotify, [4] [5] Jameson, Johnnie Walker, [6] and A Whitespace Creative Agency. [7] On 12 November 2016, BlockParty in-partnership with A Whitespace Creative Agency, to launch the AWCA BlockParty. [7]

The Block Party series has featured in five major cities across West Africa; Lagos (Island and Mainland), Port Harcourt, Abuja, Accra and Ibadan. On stage, it has featured the likes of; Major Lazer, Sarz, Niniola, Teni, Zlatan, Skales, DJ Obi, M.I Abaga, Perruzi, Bnxn, BOJ, Blaqbonez, Ice Prince, Victony, King Perryy, Omah Lay, Falz, Skiibii, Chinko Ekun, Ycee, and Odumodublvck. In 2023, OkayAfrica listed Block Party as one of the Places in Lagos to Have Fun this Weekend. [14]

Discography

On 8 August 2020, Mainland BlockParty present a collaborative single with Victony titled "Space & Time", [15] as the first single off its collaborative project titled Saturn [16] with Victony. On 8 April 2021, Mainland BlockParty released a compilation studio album titled Confluence Project in partnership with Jameson Irish Whiskey. The album features Alpha P, Fave, Naeto C, Ladipoe, Terry Apala, Bnxn, and Joeboy. Exclusively produced by Tobi Mohammed, with additional production from Sess The PRBLM Kid, SynX, and Adey. [17]

The festival provides a venue for live bands, DJs, and musical acts to perform. It also features outdoor activities, local vendors, and artisans. The main show features a line-up of African acts from numerous countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Congo, Kenya, and the United Kingdom. The goal of the festival is to encourage the development of African talent and promote artists both within the continent and into overseas markets.

Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, professionally known as Spinall, is a Nigerian disc jockey, record producer, songwriter, label executive, and media personality. He first gained prominence in 2004, while working as a radio DJ at Raypower 100.5 FM, Spinall studied at Tenstrings Music Institute. He later joined Industry Nite where he promoted underground talents at the weekly platform. He was the official DJ to Wande Coal while he was affiliated with Mavin Records. He created a style edge to his outfit known as TheCAP, tracing his roots back to his culture. TheCAP, which fans tags as "TheCrazyAzzParty" has since then been his brand power and identity. Prior to April 2021, he went by the stage name DJ Spinall, and started an Afromix series on Apple Music, on 15 April 2021. and hosted a television show, known as Smirnoff Infamous Mix on MTV Base, Soundcity TV with a podcast series launched on Audiomack and various radio stations in Nigeria. On 6 April 2021, Smirnoff Infamous Mix first episode featured guest appearance from Wurld.

Oludemilade Martin Alejo, known professionally as Ycee, is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter. He gained popularity after his single "Condo", which features vocals by Patoranking, earned him two nominations at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. He was also nominated for Best Artist in African Pop at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards and for Next Rated at The Headies 2016. Ycee signed a record deal with Sony Music in October 2016, but terminated his contract with the label in February 2018.

Victony Nigerian musician

Anthony Ebuka Victor, known professionally as Victony is a Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter. He is from the Orsu local government area of Imo State. He was influenced while growing up by artists like Davido, Wizkid, Mi, and Falz. He is signed to a Nigerian record label called Mainland BlockParty and Jungle Records. He released a debut studio album Saturn, in August 2020. He released his first single titled Ina Benz, which was his first appearance in the music industry.

Daniel Benson, known professionally as Bnxn and formerly known as Buju, is a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer, songwriter and record producer.

Ekeh Chiaka Joseph known professionally as Majeeed is a Nigerian Afropop Singer, and Songwriter signed to Dream Empire Music. He is known for his breakthrough single "Yawa No Dey End", released in 2022 as the lead single off his extended play Bitter Sweet. On 29 April 2022, a new version of "Yawa No Dey End", was released with Joeboy, through Dream Empire Music, and emPawa Africa, which peaked at number 41 on the Nigeria TurnTable Top 50 chart, on the week of May 9, 2022.

Michael Chigozie Alagwu, better known by his stage name Tempoe, is a Nigerian record producer, DJ, singer and songwriter. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he is popularly known for the tag "MÄD!", at the beginning or end of all his music productions. His production of CKay's breakout afrobeats song, Love Nwantiti received global recognition.

Marcel Larry Akunwata popularly known as Blaisebeatz or Blaise Beats, is a Nigerian record producer, and songwriter. He rose to stardom in 2020 with, the production hit "Pami" by DJ Tunez. His other production hits includes "Enjoy" by Tekno, "Sinner", "It Is What It Is", and "Mercy" by Adekunle Gold, "Call Me Every Day" by Chris Brown, "Buga" by Kizz Daniel, and "No Wahala" by 1da Banton. In 2022, he won the Afro Highlife Producer Of The Year and Afro Dancehall Producer Of The Year category at The Beatz Awards.
