The Chisel are an English punk rock formed in London in 2020. Founded by former Arms Race members Nicholas Sarnella and Charlie "Chubby Charles" Manning-Walker, as well as Cal Graham, the band has released two studio albums and four EPs. Maximum Rocknroll writer Eric Anderson named them one of the leaders of "the new wave of Oi!". [1]

History

The Chisel was formed at the beginning of 2020 in London, [2] and has its origin in Arms Race vocalist Nicholas Sarnella and Cal Graham discussing forming a band together, although with no particular style in mind. Once these discussion began to be realised, the pair recruited Arms Race's guitarist Charlie "Chubby Charles" Manning-Walker. This trio recorded the EP Deconstructive Surgery (2020) with Manning-Walker on guitar, Sarnella on drums and Graham on vocals, before hiring bassist Tom Ellis and additional guitarist Luke Younger. [3] On 15 January 2021, they released their second EP Come See Me / Not The Only One, [4] then on 5 March 2021, released their third EP Enough Said. [5]

On 8 October 2021, they announced that their debut album Retaliation was set to be released on 26 November, and released the album's title track as a single. [6] In August 2022, they toured European support the Circle Jerks. [7] On 28 November 2022, they released a split EP with Mexican street punk band Mess. [8] On 6 April 2023, they announced they had signed to Pure Noise Records. [9] On 26 April, the label re-released the band's album Retaliation. [10] On 6 May 2023, they released their single "Cry Your Eyes Out". [11] From 19 to 27 May, they supported the Chats on their UK headline tour. [12] From 28 May to 12 June, they supported GBH on their US headline tour. [13] The band were featured on Pure Noise's Dead Formats Volume 2 compilation album, which they contributed a cover of Elton John's 1973 song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting". [14]

Musical style

Critics have categorised the Chisel's music as punk rock, [15] oi!, [16] [17] street punk [18] and hardcore punk, [17] [19] incorporating elements of pub rock, [2] anarcho-punk, UK82 [20] folk [21] and rock and roll. [11] Their music is often fast and aggressive while also being melodic. [22] Graham's lyrics discuss topics such as fighting and working class struggle, with his vocals showcasing his Lancashire accent, with some songs making use of harmonicas and pianos. [23] [21] [24] Stereogum writer Tom Brieham called their style a merger of "the speed and focus of the hardcore" and "classic UK street-punk, with its beery melodic abandon and its group-hug chant-along choruses". [25]

They have cited influences including the Angelic Upstarts, Conflict, the Exploited, the Partisans, [3] the Ramones, the Replacements and Leatherface. [26]

Crucifix was an American hardcore punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area, active from 1980 to 1984. They were among the most popular acts of the San Francisco punk scene of the early 1980s. Fronted by Cambodian-born singer Sothira Pheng, Crucifix were distinct among American underground bands for their strong D-beat musical characteristics and anarchist lyrical content and graphic design. The band's debut 1983 full-length album Dehumanization on Crass Records‘ offshoot Corpus Christi Records, is considered by many critics and fans to be a cornerstone of political punk music. After their breakup, Crucifix’s members went on to form the bands Loudspeaker and Proudflesh.

Neurosis is an American post-metal band from Oakland, California. It was formed in 1985 by guitarist Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson, and drummer Jason Roeder, initially as a hardcore punk band. Chad Salter joined as a second guitarist and appeared on the band's 1987 debut Pain of Mind and then Steve Von Till replaced him in 1989. The following year, the lineup further expanded to include a keyboardist and a visual artist. Beginning with their third album Souls at Zero (1992), Neurosis transformed their hardcore sound by incorporating diverse influences including doom metal and industrial music, becoming a major force in the emergence of the post-metal and sludge metal genres.

Scream is an American hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C.; they originally formed in the suburb of Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia. Scream originally formed in 1981 within the vanguard of the Washington Hardcore explosion. In 2009, the band reunited, and as of January 2012 were on tour in Europe. As of 2017, the band was still touring in both America and the United Kingdom.

Terror is an American hardcore punk band from Los Angeles, formed in 2002. The band has undergone several line-up changes, all overseen by founding members Scott Vogel and Nick Jett (drums). Its current lineup also features guitarists Martin Stewart and Jordan Posner, as well as bassist Chris Linkovich. The band has released eight studio albums – the most recent of which, Pain Into Power, was released in May 2022. The band are noted as one of the most influential modern bands within beatdown hardcore and hardcore punk, with Stereogum describing Terror as "an institution within their genre".

Koyo is an American melodic hardcore band formed in 2020 in Stony Brook, New York. The band was formed as a supergroup of hardcore bands including SeeYouSpaceCowboy, with vocalist Joey Chiaramonte hailing from the band Typecaste. They released their debut EP Painting Words Into Lines in March 2020. In 2022, Koyo signed a record deal with Pure Noise Records.

Scowl is an American hardcore punk band from Santa Cruz, California. The band consists of singer Kat Moss, guitarists Malachi Greene and Mikey Bifolco, bassist Bailey Lupo, and drummer Cole Gilbert.

Zulu is an American hardcore punk band formed in Los Angeles in 2019. Beginning as a solo project by multi–instrumentalist and principal vocalist Anaiah Lei, the band grew to also include Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar) and Satchel Brown (bass). Zulu has released two EPs in addition to their 2023 debut album A New Tomorrow. In a 2023 article, Metal Hammer described them as the year's "most vital hardcore band".

Sunami is an American hardcore punk band formed in San Jose, California in 2019. Originally intended as a short-lived joke band by members of various San Francisco Bay Area hardcore bands, Sunami sought to parody the ignorant style of many hardcore bands on their 2019 demo Demonstration. However, after gaining notoriety for their violent debut live performance, the band continued past their planned time frame. They have since released three EPs, with their debut self-titled album being released on June 14, 2023. A 2023 article by Revolver credited them as "in the upper echelon of bands dominating the hardcore zeitgeist".

Gulch was an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2016. The band released only one studio album Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress (2020), as well as two EPs and one demo tape. They performed their final live performance on July 31, 2022, at the peak of their popularity. The New York Times credited them as one of the driving forces of American hardcore's "Rennaissance" in the 2020s.

Drain is an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2014. Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited them as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s.
