The Cimarons are a British reggae band formed in 1967. They were the UK's first self-contained indigenous reggae band. [1] [2]
Jamaican natives, The Cimarons emigrated to London as teenagers and met at the Tavistock Youth and Community Centre in Harlesden, North London in 1967. [3] With a lineup consisting of Franklyn Dunn (bass), Carl Levy (keyboards), Locksley Gichie (lead guitar), Maurice Ellis (drums) and vocalist Carl Lewis. They performed their first concert in 1968. [3] Vocalist, Winston Reid (better known as Winston Reedy) joined in 1973. They were primarily session musicians at Trojan Records, and backed many artists, including Jimmy Cliff and Dennis Brown, and performed with Bob Marley in 1972. [3] They performed at the Edinburgh Reggae Festival in 1973, where they also backed Nicky Thomas's performance of Syl Johnson's original, "Is It Because I'm Black". They appeared on Top of the Pops in multiple performances including with Ken Boothe in 1974. [3] They were studio musicians and producers on Boothe’s Everything I Own album on certain tracks. The band often appeared under aliases such as the Hot Rod All Stars or the Soul Messengers. [3]
Their first album In Time, released on Trojan Records in 1974 featured a rendition of the O'Jays' "Ship Ahoy", "Utopian Feeling", a Johnny Arthey-arranged version of "Over the Rainbow," and "My Blue Heaven". [3] Vulcan Records, one of the first independent foundation conscious roots reggae and dub labels in the UK and a sister label to Grounation record label, released their second album On the Rock two years later, which was recorded both in Jamaica at Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark Studio, Joseph Hoo Kim's Channel One Studios and Randy Chin's Randy’s recording studio and in England at London’s Chalk Farm Studios. [3] The album included a cover of Bob Marley's "Talking Blues" which charted in Jamaica at the number 1 spot for several weeks where it was released on Tommy Cowan's Talent Corp label. [3] The album also featured a tribute to Paul Bogle, the leader of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion who was made a National Hero by the Jamaican government in 1969.
In the late 1970s when punk rock was in ascendance in England, The Cimarons regularly played with bands such as The Clash and Billy Idol's Generation X at a time when the Rock Against Racism movement catalysed and captured the zeitgeist. They switched to Polydor Records, releasing Live at the Roundhouse in 1978. Polydor released Maka the same year. During this period, they did a major British tour supporting Sham 69, who had just released their John Cale-produced debut single. Three more albums followed: Freedom Street, Reggaebility and On the Rock Part 2. After the last of these, in 1983, they didn't surface again until 1995 when Lagoon Records released People Say and Reggae Time, both compilations of earlier albums, followed by The Best of the Cimarons, released in 1999 on Culture Press.In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Lloyd 'Jah Bunny' Donaldson was active in the roots reggae and sound system scene, releasing records with Dennis Bovell's Matumbi (band) and with The African Brothers, who released vocal and dub discomixes for Greensleeves Records.Winston Reedy went on to a prolific and active solo career, releasing records mostly in the Lovers Rock, dancehall and conscious roots reggae style with Gregory Isaacs, Jackie Mittoo, Enos McLeod, Vin Gordon, Joseph Cotton, Mafia & Fluxy, and Dennis Alcapone.
Gichie and Dunn continue to perform as The Cimarons.
The Cimarons also backed several singers on Trojan singles, often credited on the B-side with an instrumental version of the A-side.
Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minott was a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer, record producer and sound-system operator.
Horace Andy is a Jamaican roots reggae songwriter and singer, known for his distinctive vocals and hit songs such as "Government Land", as well as "Angel", "Spying Glass", and "Five Man Army" with English trip hop group Massive Attack. He is also famous for a cover version of "Ain't No Sunshine". Andy is often described as one of the most respected and influential singers in Jamaica.
Alton Nehemiah Ellis was a Jamaican singer-songwriter. One of the innovators of rocksteady, he was given the informal title "Godfather of Rocksteady". In 2006, he was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame.
Gregory Anthony Isaacs OD was a Jamaican reggae musician. Milo Miles, writing in The New York Times, described Isaacs as "the most exquisite vocalist in reggae".
Prince Far I was a Jamaican reggae deejay and producer, and a Rastafarian. He was known for his gruff voice and critical assessment of the Jamaican government. His track "Heavy Manners" used lyrics about government measures initiated at the time against violent crime.
Donat Roy Mittoo, better known as Jackie Mittoo, was a Jamaican-Canadian keyboardist, songwriter and musical director. He was a member of The Skatalites and musical director of the Studio One record label.
Kenneth George Boothe OD is a Jamaican vocalist known for his distinctive vibrato and timbre. Boothe achieved an international reputation as one of Jamaica's finest vocalists through a series of crossover hits that appealed to both reggae fans and mainstream audiences.
Joe Gibbs born Joel Arthur Gibson was a Jamaican reggae producer.
Manley Augustus Buchanan, better known as Big Youth, is a Jamaican deejay, mostly known for his work during the 1970s.
Dennis Emmanuel Brown CD was a Jamaican reggae singer. During his prolific career, which began in the late 1960s when he was aged eleven, he recorded more than 75 albums and was one of the major stars of lovers rock, a subgenre of reggae. Bob Marley cited Brown as his favourite singer, dubbing him "The Crown Prince of Reggae", and Brown would prove influential on future generations of reggae singers.

Derrick Clifton Harriott OD is a Jamaican singer and record producer. He was a member of the Jiving Juniors with Herman Sang before embarking on a solo career. He has produced recordings by Big Youth, Chariot Riders, The Chosen Few, Dennis Brown, The Ethiopians, Keith & Tex, The Kingstonians, Rudy Mills, Scotty, Sly & Revolutionaries, and Winston McAnuff.
Keith Hudson, was a Jamaican reggae artist and record producer. He is known for his influence on the dub movement.
Harris Lloyd "B. B." Seaton, also known as "Bibby", was a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, and record producer who was a member of The Gaylads, The Astronauts, Conscious Minds, and The Messengers, and who had a long solo career dating back to 1960.
Matumbi were one of the top British reggae bands of the 1970s and early 1980s, and are best known as the first successful band of guitarist and record producer Dennis Bovell. The group wrote and performed the opening theme song to Empire Road, a British television series made by the BBC in 1978 and running until 1979. The popularity of the song led to it being released as a single in 1978.
Winston Tucker, better known as Winston Groovy, is a Jamaican reggae singer best known for his recordings between the late 1960s and 1980s.
Keith Williams, better known as Honey Boy, is a Jamaican reggae singer best known for his recordings in the 1970s who is regarded as one of the pioneers of lovers rock.
Zap Pow is a Jamaican reggae band, founded by singer/bassist Michael Williams aka Mikey Zappow and guitarist Dwight Pinkney. Members also included singer Beres Hammond, trumpeter David Madden, saxman Glen DaCosta, and drummer Cornell Marshall. They originally existed from 1969 to 1979; they re-formed in 2016.
Paul Douglas is a Jamaican musician, best known for his work as the drummer, percussionist and bandleader of Toots and the Maytals. His career spans more than five decades as one of reggae's most recorded drummers. Music journalist and reggae historian David Katz wrote, "dependable drummer Paul Douglas played on countless reggae hits."
