The Friggs were a garage rock band from Camden, New Jersey active from 1990 to 2000. Its original members were Palmyra Delran (guitar) and Jezebel (singer/songwriter), the latter of whom was later replaced by Lexi Plumm.

History

The band played its first show in Philadelphia on New Year's Eve 1991/1992, and released their first single, a cover of The Troggs' "Come Now," in 1991, before playing any live shows. [1] This was followed by several more singles and an EP, America's Only Rock & Roll Magazine Parody. The cover of this 1994 EP, which was produced by Ben Vaughn, [2] closely mimicked the cover of an old issue of Creem . [3] Late that year, Jezebel left the band, whereupon she was replaced by Lexi Plumm. Delran decided to hire Plumm after she was impressed by the sound of motorcycles on her answering machine. [4] The band released their only album, Rock Candy, in 1997 on E-Vil Records. It was also produced by Vaughn. [4] Rock Candy received positive reviews, which led to the band opening for Beck and Cheap Trick. [1] The band performed at SXSW in 1997 [5] and broke up in 2000. [6]

Film appearances

The Friggs' song "Bad Word for a Good Thing" appeared in both the films Jawbreaker and Fuck . Their cover of Pat Benatar's song Heartbreaker also appeared in Jawbreaker, but was left off the soundtrack. [7] Their song "Shake," from their second single release in 1991, appeared in the film Superbad . [1] On the heels of this exposure, the band decided to reunite in 2008 for a few more performances. [8]

Style

The Friggs themselves have described their style as "trashy pop", and MTV News' Frank Tortorici concurred with this description. The Austin Chronicle has described the Friggs as "an all-female version of The Standells" [9] and their music as "'60's-influenced trash-pop". [10] Similarly, The Morning Call has praised the band for their "danceable retro-'60s sound." [11]

<i>Faithless Street</i> 1995 studio album by Whiskeytown

Faithless Street is the debut studio album by alternative country band Whiskeytown, released in 1995 on Mood Food Records. The album was re-issued by Outpost Recordings in 1998 with several bonus tracks added, and the track "Oklahoma" omitted. Pitchfork Media has called the album "an alt-country touchstone".

<i>Jawbreaker</i> (film) 1999 film by Darren Stein

Jawbreaker is a 1999 American teen black comedy crime film written and directed by Darren Stein. The film stars Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and Julie Benz as girls in an exclusive clique in their high school. Charlotte Ayanna has a non-speaking cameo role as the murdered fourth member of the group. The film was inspired by the 1988 film Heathers, and is often compared to it, particularly the use of bright pastels, the plot involving a popular female clique, and the ostensibly accidental killing of one of its members.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas. It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. There was no in-person event in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austin; in both years there was a smaller online event instead.


Dash Rip Rock is an American rock band. The band is best known for its cowpunk sound, which mixes punk rock, rockabilly, hard rock, country and boogie. The New York Times stated that Dash Rip Rock combines “fluency in American roots music with a robust dose of punk-rock spirit.”Dash Rip Rock has toured consistently for decades.Bill Davis, Dash Rip Rock's founder and frontman, is a songwriter known for his blistering guitar work. Spin praised Dash Rip Rock as “undeniably the South’s greatest rock band.” In 2012, Dash Rip Rock was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

The Sour Notes are an American independent rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in 2008 by multi-instrumentalist Jared Boulanger—who writes and composes all of the band's material.

Automatic 7 is an American rock trio. Formed in 1993, they have released three albums to date. They released their debut album self-titled Automatic 7 on November 22, 1995, on BYO Records. Band members John Hulett, Nic Nifoussi and Ray Mehlbaum (drums) toured North America and Europe with Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Face to Face, Bouncing Souls, Less than Jake, D.O.A., Youth Brigade, Shades Apart, Down By Law, Suicide Machines in addition to various shows with Love and Rockets, Lit, Jimmy Eat World, Reverend Horton Heat and John Doe of X. In 1996 Automatic 7 contributed a cover version of the Psychedelic Furs "Pretty in Pink" to the Vagrant Records V/A release Before You Were Punk along with other various 1980s themed covers by bands such as Blink 182 and Face to Face.

Lions were an American rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in 2005. The lineup consists of singer Matt Drenik, guitarist Austin Kalman and drummer Jake Perlman. Trevor Sutcliffe was Lions' bassist from their formation until his departure in 2009, where he was replaced by Mike Sellman. The band formed following the breakup of The Good Looks, the previous band of both Drenik and Perlman.

Glorium was a prolific art punk band that was formed in San Antonio, Texas, in 1991. After moving to Austin, Texas, in 1992, the band released several 7-inch records and albums, many on local Austin independent record labels. The band's music is a blend of post-punk, emo, art rock, classic rock, garage rock, progressive rock and noise rock with a strong DIY ethic.
