Leiden University Libraries is a library founded in 1575 in Leiden, Netherlands. It is regarded as a significant place in the development of European culture: it is a part of a small number of cultural centres that gave direction to the development and spread of knowledge during the Enlightenment. This was due particularly to the simultaneous presence of a unique collection of exceptional sources and scholars. Holdings include approximately 5,200,000 volumes, 1,000,000 e-books, 70,000 e-journals, 2,000 current paper journals, 60,000 Oriental and Western manuscripts, 500,000 letters, 100,000 maps, 100,000 prints, 12,000 drawings, 300,000 photographs and 3,000 cuneiform tablets. The library manages the largest collections worldwide on Indonesia and the Caribbean. Furthermore, Leiden University Libraries is the only heritage organization in The Netherlands with five registrations of documents in UNESCO's international Memory of the World Register.

Lodewijk Woltjer was an astronomer, and the son of astronomer Jan Woltjer. He studied at the University of Leiden under Jan Oort earning a PhD in astronomy in 1957 with a thesis on the Crab Nebula. This was followed by post-doctoral research appointments to various American universities and the subsequent appointment of professor of theoretical astrophysics and plasma physics in the University of Leiden. From 1964 to 1974 he was Rutherford Professor of Astronomy and Chair of the Astronomy Department at Columbia University in New York. From 1975 to 1987 he was Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), where he initiated the construction of the Very Large Telescope. In 1994–1997 he was President of the International Astronomical Union. Woltjer was honored in 1987 with the Karl Schwarzschild Medal.

This standard work was also translated into Russian and Chinese. Professor Torenbeek received the 58th Ludwig Prandtl Ring (2016) "in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of aircraft design in teaching, research and application" from the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics.

He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for the year 2020 in mathematical science category. He is affiliated to the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University, the Netherlands from 2021. Prior to that he was affiliated to Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Dr. Hazra has a very broad range of research interests including extreme value theory, regular variation, random matrices, free probability, Gaussian free fields, branching random walks, membrane models, random graphs, etc.
Johan Rooryck is a Belgian linguist and a visiting professor at Leiden University where he was Professor of French Linguistics between 1993 and 2020. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal Glossa and the former executive editor of Lingua (1999-2015). Rooryck is known for his works on generative grammar. He is the executive director of cOAlition S and is a recipient of Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship (2011/2012).
