The Hex is a 2018 video game by Canadian independent developer Daniel Mullins. Its narrative takes place in a bar with six different characters the player controls; through the usage of flashbacks, the game encompasses different gameplay genres, each of which is associated with a player character. Mullins created the game as a follow-up to the success Pony Island , his previous game. The Hex was well-received by critics.
In The Hex, the player controls six characters based on archetypical video game genres. The player experiences each of their pasts through gameplay associated with that genre — for instance, a platformer or top-down shooter. Each section of gameplay shares common controls, where the player uses the arrow keys. [2] In between these segments, there are short puzzles in the form of an adventure game. [3] As the game's narrative progresses, the world of the games and the narrative outside them is blended in a variety of ways, [4] and the game interlaces multiple genres at once. [5]
If the player follows hidden instructions, they are lead to a secret ending that involves interacting with a free Steam game, Beneath The Surface, which implies it was created by a character from The Hex's fictional universe. [6]
The Hex features a cast of six prototypical video game characters who have met up in a bar, where they are informed that a murder will occur on the premises that night. The player learns of each character's backstory via flashback sequences in which the player controls the character in their original video game. In each segment, the character comes to despise the game environment, and attempts to become overpowered and remove themselves from the game world. This causes interference from Gameworks, who runs the non-player characters and game logic, and punishes them for non-compliance by psychologically torturing them. Between each flashback, the player controls the different characters as they navigate the tavern attempting to solve the mystery. The penultimate flashback, "Vicious Galaxy" is an unforgiving top-down shooter; in it, the different genres start to meld together, and the character ends up on a mission to steal an artifact from Gameworks.
The final game is a walking simulator, "Walk", which sees the player assume the role of a faceless stand in. The game is an autobiographical account of the creator of the other games, Lionel Snill. Snill describes building and discarding several game ideas while navigating the stresses of video game industry, but he eventually alienates those around him. At the end of "Walk" the non-player characters interfere to allow the player to acquire the artifact, which the "Vicious Galaxy" flashback was actually a cover to retrieve. This artifact, the titular Hex, allows the barkeep, a character from Snill’s very first game, to enter the real world and murder him, solving the mystery.
The game's developer, Daniel Mullins, first attempted to enter game development with a failed Kickstarter project, before finding success with the metafictional game Pony Island . After completing that game, he realised that to succeed, he had to continue doing games with unconventional gameplay. [7] Alongside himself, he employed Pony Island composer Jonah Senzel and modeller Brendan Sullivan. [8] After completing Pony Island, Mullins announced The Hex in July 2016. [9]
His game development process was inspired by working on game jams, leading to an improvisational spirit. [7] Although his use of the Unity game engine simplified development, Mullins stated that the creation of independent gameplay elements was difficult. Much of the genres in the game were aided by his experience working on actual small games of various genres. [1] Initially, the game would have included autobiographical elements, with the fictional developer of the game's characters being "Lienad Snillum" (Mullins's name reversed). However, as he continued development, the character evolved into the more negative figure of Lionel Snill. [1]
The game was released for Windows, Mac, and Linux in October 2018. [8]

According to aggregation site Metacritic, The Hex was generally favourably received by critics. [10] Writing for Destructoid , Kevin Mersereau praised the changing of game genres, praising its "insanely creative twists". [2] Eurogamer Italy's Luca Del Pizzo stated that "it only takes a few minutes... to understand the peculiarity, madness, courage and originality" of the game. [3]
Del Pizzo praised the level of challenge in the game, describing it as balanced. [3] Conversely, Mersereau stated that the game "holds your hand a little too much for my liking", describing a segment where the game gave the answer to a puzzle before he had the chance to solve it. [2]
John Walker of Rock Paper Shotgun praised the depth of the game, saying it was a "joy to chat to others who've finished it". However, he criticised the pacing of some portions, saying that they "drag on for far too long". [5] Nathan Grayson concurred in his review for Kotaku , but stated that those portions were forgettable as "there's so much to like". [4]

The caves are procedurally generated, making each run-through of the game unique.

Rust is a multiplayer survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. It was first released in early access in December 2013 and received its full release in February 2018. Rust is available on Windows and macOS. Console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One developed in conjunction with Double Eleven were released in May 2021. Rust was initially created as a clone of DayZ, a popular mod for ARMA 2, with crafting elements akin to those in Minecraft.
Pony Island is a video game developed and published by Canadian indie developer Daniel Mullins. As a metafictional game, the game has the player interact with what appears to be an old arcade cabinet game called "Pony Island". The player soon discovers the game is corrupted by Lucifer himself, who is trying to claim the player's soul. The player is aided by the soul of a previous player who helps the player access Pony Island's internal programming to get around the traps left by Lucifer and save not only his soul, but the many tormented souls that are trapped within the game's code.
Celeste is a 2018 platform game developed and published by indie studio Maddy Makes Games. The player controls Madeline, a young woman with anxiety and depression who aims to climb Celeste Mountain. Dead Cells is a 2018 roguelike-Metroidvania game developed by Motion Twin and Evil Empire, and published by Motion Twin. The player takes the role of an amorphous creature called the Prisoner. As the Prisoner, the player must fight their way out of a diseased island in order to slay the island's King. The player gains weapons, treasure and other tools through exploration of the procedurally-generated levels. Dead Cells features a permadeath system, causing the player to lose all items and other abilities upon dying. A currency called Cells can be collected from defeated enemies, allowing the player to purchase permanent upgrades.
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander is a strategy video game and turn-based tactical RPG hybrid developed and published by Massive Damage. It was released on September 8, 2016 for Windows, OS X and Linux, and October 19, 2017 for iOS. Taking place in a science fiction setting, the player must reclaim and rebuild the derelict ancient space station Halcyon 6 in order to stop an impending alien invasion of Earth.
The Gardens Between is an adventure/puzzle video game developed by Australian studio The Voxel Agents and published in September 2018 for Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. It was later released for Xbox One in 2018, iOS in 2019, Android in 2020, and PlayStation 5 in 2022. The game, which conveys its story through visuals and gameplay rather than dialogue or narration, follows two children, Arina and Frendt, in the treehouse in a garden between their houses. In a dreamscape, they progress through sets of island levels, each representing different shared experiences. The characters walk along a path that winds through each level, and the player solves environment-based puzzles that prevent the pair from reaching and activating a portal at the end of the path. To do so, the player controls the flow of time forwards and backwards and causes the characters to interact with nearby objects and spheres of light, rather than moving the pair directly.

The game has the player take the role of a Grim Reaper, who must bureaucratically decide the fates of humans, specifically whether they will live or die. The game shares its ideology with the death-positive movement. On March 18, 2020, Placeholder Gameworks uploaded the game code under the MIT License on GitHub.

In Night Call, player assumes the role of a Parisian taxi driver who survived the actions of a serial killer, and is compelled to solve a murder mystery following his awakening from a coma. Aside from pursuing interactions with the driver's passengers as the conceit behind the investigation, the gameplay of Night Call also incorporates aspects of a management simulator, which reflects Houssine's need to make a living as a taxi driver.
Inscryption is a 2021 roguelike deck-building game developed by Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital. Directed by Daniel Mullins, it was originally released for Windows on October 19, 2021, and on Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S over the following two years. The game puts the player in a cabin where a mysterious gamemaster makes them play a tabletop game.
Unsighted is a 2021 indie video game developed by Studio Pixel Punk and published by Humble Games for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PS4.
