The Light of Smiles is the fourth album by American rock musician Gary Wright. It was released in January 1977 on Warner Bros. Records as the follow-up to his commercial breakthrough, The Dream Weaver . The album was produced by Wright and recorded in Los Angeles in 1976. Aside from drums and orchestral strings, the music was created entirely on synthesizers and other keyboard instruments. The lyrics reflect Wright's preoccupation with spirituality, particularly the teachings of Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda.
Although the album failed to match the commercial impact of its predecessor, The Light of Smiles was moderately successful and received a favorable response from some music critics. In the United States, it peaked at number 23 on Billboard 's albums chart, while the single "Phantom Writer" reached number 43 on the Hot 100.
Gary Wright began writing songs for The Light of Smiles while on tour in 1976, [1] having become a popular concert draw with the success of The Dream Weaver . [2] Recording started in Los Angeles during the summer, with Wright using members of his tour band, including keyboardist Peter Reilich and drummer Art Wood, and session musicians David Foster and Jim Keltner, [3] both of whom had contributed to The Dream Weaver. [4] In early June, Chris Charlesworth of Melody Maker reported that the new album would be "a logical development" of its predecessor and focus solely on sounds generated through keyboard instruments, particularly synthesizers. [5] Played mainly by Wright, Foster and Reilich, the range of keyboard instruments includes clavinet, organ, and Moog, Oberheim and ARP synthesizers. [6] Reilich also provided arrangements for orchestral strings on "Phantom Writer" and "Child of Light". [7]
On "I Am the Sky", Wright gave a songwriting credit to the late Indian guru and Kriya Yoga teacher, [8] Paramahansa Yogananda. [9] The latter's poem "The Light of Smiles", taken from his book Metaphysical Meditations, [10] appeared on the LP's inner sleeve. [7] During the recording sessions, Wright and Foster also contributed to George Harrison's first album for Warner Bros. Records, Thirty Three & 1/3 , with Wright playing synthesizer on "See Yourself", [11] one of the album's two Yogananda-inspired tracks. [12] Having been introduced to Yogananda's book Autobiography of a Yogi by Harrison in the early 1970s, Wright subsequently acknowledged the guru as a lifelong influence. [13] The front cover of The Light of Smiles includes a portrait of Wright painted by John Silletto. [14]
Warner Bros. issued The Light of Smiles in January 1977, with "Phantom Writer" as the album's lead single. [15] Wright toured extensively to promote the release. [16] In his 2014 autobiography, he regrets choosing "Phantom Writer" for the single, and cites this decision as an example of his "smug" belief that, after his hit singles "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive" in 1976, "anything I released would be hugely successful". Wright says he should have edited down "Water Sign" instead for release as the lead single. [16]
Although it failed to match the commercial success of The Dream Weaver, [17] the album proved popular. [18] On the U.S. charts compiled by Billboard , it peaked at number 23, [18] while "Phantom Writer" reached number 43 on the Hot 100. [19]
Billboard's reviewer recognized The Light of Smiles as an advance on The Dream Weaver, in that "Wright proves himself even more highly developed as a virtuoso of blending ethereal sounds into a brilliantly commercial texture." The reviewer also said: "His arrangements are increasingly varied and dynamic, his voice is more flexible and feathery than ever. This is softly pulsating, spacey music that never gets boring or pretentious." [20]
In his review for Rolling Stone , Stephen Holden admired the album for blending "the erotic and the spiritual into an overawed romanticism" with a subtlety that he found lacking in other examples of contemporary "mystical art rock", and for Wright's use of musical virtuosity "as elements of song structure and not as side trips or self-justifying entities". He said that although the Yogananda-inspired lyrics engaged with spirituality on a more superficial level than artists such as Stevie Wonder, Andy Pratt and Harrison applied in their work, "such sweetness issuing from one who sounds like Stevie Winwood beatified is almost impossible to dislike." Holden concluded by saying that The Light of Smiles was "even sweeter than its predecessor" and so would "cinch Gary Wright's position as prince of the new guru rock". [21] Writing in The Rolling Stone Record Guide , however, Dave Marsh dismissed the album with a one-star review. Marsh grouped it with Wright's next two releases as examples of the artist's overindulgence and propensity for "a spacy, mystical froth of synthesizers and remarkably poor vocalizing". [22]

On the Third Day is the third studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and the first to be recorded without input from Roy Wood. It was released in the United States in November 1973 by United Artists Records, and in the United Kingdom on 14 December 1973 by Warner Bros. Records. From this album on, the word The was dropped from the band's name. The album was reissued on 12 September 2006.

Thirty Three & 1⁄3 is the seventh studio album by English musician George Harrison, released in November 1976. It was Harrison's first album release on his Dark Horse record label, the worldwide distribution for which changed from A&M Records to Warner Bros. as a result of his late delivery of the album's master tapes. Among other misfortunes affecting its creation, Harrison suffered hepatitis midway through recording, and the copyright infringement suit regarding his 1970–71 hit song "My Sweet Lord" was decided in favour of the plaintiff, Bright Tunes Music. The album contains the US top 30 singles "This Song" – Harrison's satire on that lawsuit and the notion of plagiarism in pop music – and "Crackerbox Palace". Despite the problems associated with the album, many music critics recognised Thirty Three & 1⁄3 as a return to form for Harrison after his poorly received work during 1974–75, and considered it his strongest collection of songs since 1970's acclaimed All Things Must Pass.
Masque is the third studio album by American progressive rock band Kansas. The album was released in September 1975, remastered for CD in 2001, and again remastered and reissued on vinyl in 2014. The opening track, "It Takes a Woman's Love ", was remixed for release as a single but was not popular, including additional guest vocals and segments far different from the album version.
"Here Comes the Sun" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1969 album Abbey Road. It was written by George Harrison and is one of his best-known compositions. Harrison wrote the song in early 1969 at the country house of his friend Eric Clapton, where Harrison had chosen to play truant for the day to avoid attending a meeting at the Beatles' Apple Corps organisation. Gary Malcolm Wright was an American musician and composer best known for his 1976 hit songs "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive". Wright's breakthrough album, The Dream Weaver (1975), came after he had spent seven years in London as, alternately, a member of the British blues rock band Spooky Tooth and a solo artist on A&M Records. While in England, he played keyboards on former Beatle George Harrison's triple album All Things Must Pass (1970), so beginning a friendship that inspired the Indian religious themes and spirituality inherent in Wright's subsequent songwriting. His work from the late 1980s onwards embraced world music and the new age genre, although none of his post-1976 releases matched the same level of popularity as The Dream Weaver.

"See Yourself" is a song by English musician George Harrison, released on his 1976 album Thirty Three & 1/3. Harrison began writing the song in 1967, while he was a member of the Beatles, in response to the public outcry surrounding bandmate Paul McCartney's admission that he had taken the hallucinogenic drug LSD. McCartney's announcement created a reaction in the press similar to that caused in 1966 by John Lennon's statement that the Beatles were more popular than Christianity. In its finished form, the song's lyrics advocate self-awareness and consideration for the consequences of one's actions. Musically, the composition contains unusual shifts in time signature from standard 4/4 to 9/8, while the songwords reflect the era of its genesis by recalling themes first espoused in the Beatles tracks "Within You Without You" and "All You Need Is Love".

It contains "Stand for Our Rights", an anthem-like song calling for social unity that was issued as a single in advance of the album. Wright changed his approach to songwriting for the album by collaborating with other writers on six of the nine songs. The album was recorded with only keyboard instruments, aside from vocals, drums, and percussion.
