Origins and Philosophy

During her early career, while traveling for her finance career, she made trips to Speyside, Paris, and Kentucky, searching out bottle shops and duty-free stands. She has since expanded her collection of whiskeys to over 1,000 bottles. [7] As whiskey values began to explode in the mid 2010s[ citation needed ], Macklowe zeroed in on an opportunity to create a single malt made in America. [7]

Production

Macklowe partnered with renowned Scottish distiller and blender Ian MacMillan, known for his work with Bunnahabhain and Bladnoch. [7] [8] The Macklowe is produced in Kentucky the way bourbon is traditionally made, using a column still and copper doubler. [9] She chose to produce a single malt because of the versatility of barley, the base grain, and the wide range of flavors. [9] The brand follows a farm-to-table philosophy, which includes a locally sourced malted barley. [10] The first releases were made in Oregon to Macklowe's specifications and aged further in Kentucky, where the initial runs are made, matured, and bottled. [11] Casks spend anywhere from 5–8 years in American white oak barrels before being hand selected by MacMillan. The product is then bottled in hand-crafted, hand painted bottles designed after flasks. [12]

Tasting Notes

With notes of vanilla and hazelnuts on the nose, The Macklowe’s Cask No. 61 is a silky, full-bodied affair marked by flavors of coffee and leather, and lingering spice. [9]

The latest release of The Macklowe, Cask No. 60, has been observed to taste like cloves, citrus, vanilla, and brown sugar, with a pronounced oakiness; the nose is strong, the finish smooth, and the seven-year-old liquid registers as spicy and warm. [7]

Reception

Bloomberg called The Macklowe “the new whiskey that is taking over Wall Street.” [7] [13] The Macklowe has consistently sold out each limited release of its Casks of Distinction within minutes of becoming available. Chef Daniel Boulud praises its “balance and purity.” [7] Jean-Georges’ restaurants, Eleven Madison Park and Daniel, the Polo Bar, and institutions like Marea, Catch Steak, Carbone, Le Pavillon, Le Bilboquet, Nick & Sam's Steakhouse,Casa Cipriani, Casa Lever, Lola Taverna, Bemelmans at the Carlyle, the Grill, the Lobster Club and Tutto il Giorno serve it. As with any Scotch whisky, a single malt Scotch must be distilled in Scotland and matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years, although most single malts are matured longer.

Single barrel whiskey is a premium class of whiskey in which each bottle comes from an individual aging barrel, instead of coming from blending together the contents of various barrels to provide uniformity of color and taste. By contrast, some other whiskeys, even ones that are not blends, may be combined from more than one batch, or even from differing years to achieve consistency. The whiskey from each barrel is bottled separately, with each bottle bearing the barrel number and in most cases the dates for the beginning and end of aging. Single pot still whiskey Style of Irish whiskey

Single pot still whiskey is a style of Irish whiskey made by a single distillery from a mixed mash of malted and unmalted barley distilled in a pot still. Somewhat similar to single malt whiskey, the style is defined by its inclusion of unmalted raw barley in the mash in addition to malt. However, small amounts of raw oats or wheat may have been used at times. This unmalted component is said to give the pot still whiskey a "spicier bristle" and "thicker texture" than the otherwise similar malt whiskeys. If the whiskey is not distilled completely on the site of a single distillery, then it may be termed pot still whiskey but not single pot still whiskey.
