The Marionette and the Music Box is a 2003 concept album by the instrumental rock group Unwed Sailor. [5] [6] The album consists of 17 instrumental tracks, each of which coincide with a painting by graphic artist Jamie Hunt in the included booklet. [7] The paintings and song titles tell the story of a marionette who journeys out of his cottage and discovers a music box. [8] The pages following their initial meeting go on to detail the entrance of a mysterious unicorn, the marionette's subsequent "enchantment," his "hopeless pursuit" of the unicorn, and eventually his return to the open arms of the music box.

Contents

The album was released on compact disc, vinyl, and also in a hardcover book that included large versions of all the paintings in the CD and vinyl booklets, along with the compact disc attached to the back cover.

Critical reception

The A.V. Club wrote that "for all [the album's] conceptual weightiness and lofty artistic goals, it's sublime and endlessly rewarding as background music, too." [7] Exclaim! called The Marionette and the Music Box an "album of subtlety and focus ... just plain soothing on the ears. One of the best records of the year." [9]

Extended play Musical recording longer than a single, but shorter than a full album

An extended play record, often referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. Contemporary EPs generally contain a minimum of three tracks and maximum of six tracks, and are considered "less expensive and time-consuming" for an artist to produce than an album. An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well.

This is the discography of Apple Records, a record label formed by the Beatles in 1968. During its early years, the label enjoyed a fair degree of commercial success, most notably with Mary Hopkin and Badfinger, as well as discovering acts such as James Taylor and Billy Preston who would go on to greater success with other labels. However, by the mid-1970s, Apple had become little more than an outlet for the Beatles' solo recordings. After EMI's contract with the Beatles ended in 1976, the Apple label was finally wound up. The label was reactivated in the 1990s with many of the original Apple albums being reissued on compact disc, and the company now oversees new Beatles releases such as the Anthology and 1 albums as well as the 2009 Beatles remastering programme. In 2010, Apple set about remastering and reissuing its back catalogue for a second time.
