The Mend (subsequently known as Race the Horizon) were a British boy band consisting of members Kris Evans, Jay Kontzle and Craig Worsley. They originally auditioned for The X Factor in 2011 but failed to get any further than bootcamp, due to having a management deal. They went on to audition for Britain's Got Talent in 2012 and reached the semi-finals but, after the public vote was invoked, due to the judges' split decision, they failed to go through to the finals. They were then brought back by the judges for the final (as a wildcard) and finished in seventh place overall. They released their debut single "Where Were You" on 24 March 2013, independently.

A boy band is loosely defined as a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their twenties at the time of formation, singing love songs marketed towards young women. Being vocal groups, most boy band members do not play musical instruments, either in recording sessions or on stage, making the term something of a misnomer. However, exceptions do exist. Many boy bands dance as well as sing, usually giving highly choreographed performances.

Martin-Smith stated in an interview that, in seeking members for the band, he, "wanted them to be ‘streetwise’ as well as having bags of personality, a good voice and looking good in front of a camera." [2]

In early 2010 Martin-Smith auditioned for a fifth member, which resulted in the addition of Kris Evans to the group. At this point Lewis Conroy left the line up and the group became a four-piece consisting of Evans, Kelly, Kontzle and Worsley. [3]

In 2011, due to the negative associations linked to the name ASBRO, the group became known as The Mend. Of the change, Dean Kelly stated in an interview, 'We loved the name Asbro, but we felt it was holding us back because there was negative feedback about it. We thought ‘we need to mend this’, hence how we came up with The Mend.' Jayme Kontzle added of the name change, "No record label has seen us as The Mend so it’s like a new start for us. It also stands for The Manchester End." [4]

They stated during their first appearance on Britain's Got Talent in early 2012 that they had been together for three years.

The Mend performed for a second time during the first semi-final on 6 May 2012, singing a mash-up of "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" and "Written in the Stars", and once again received rave reviews from the judges, with Cowell stating that there is a market for the band, and praising their vocals. The Mend were in the top three for the voting that night, and with dog act Ashleigh and Pudsey (the eventual winners) being the highest ranked act of the night with the highest number of votes, it was down to the judges to choose between The Mend and Only Boys Aloud for the next place in the final. Walliams and Holden opted for Only Boys Aloud, while Cowell and Dixon opted for The Mend, leading to a split decision. It was then revealed that Only Boys Aloud had the higher number of votes and were through to the final.

However, Ant & Dec announced at the start of the first semi-final that the judges had a wildcard and would be able to send a previously-eliminated act through to Saturday's final. The judges eventually narrowed the choices down to three: The Mend, Four Corners and Twist and Pulse Dance Company and it was announced at the beginning of the final that The Mend would take that wildcard. They then went on to perform "Without You" and despite getting praise from the judges and a good response from the audience, The Mend finished in seventh place with 2.6% of the vote.

Series Six of Britain's Got Talent, a British talent competition series, began broadcasting in the UK during 2012, from 24 March to 12 May on ITV - many media outlets criticised the series' premiere date, believing it was a deliberate attempt to start a "ratings war" with the BBC, which was launching The Voice UK at the same time. Following the previous year, Simon Cowell returned to the programme to oversee auditions for the sixth series, while the departure of both David Hasselhoff and Michael McIntyre after the fifth series, led to the producers replacing them with Alesha Dixon and David Walliams. Because of her pregnancy, Amanda Holden had to miss some of the auditions, leading to Carmen Electra standing in for her as a guest judge.

Series Seven of Britain's Got Talent, a British talent competition series, began broadcasting in the UK during 2013, from 13 April to 8 June on ITV; because of England's international friendly with the Republic of Ireland that year, the show took a break on 29 May to avoid clashing with live coverage of the match. Filming of the Judges' auditions was pushed back, so as to not conflict with the filming schedule that year of Stephen Mulhern, host of Britain's Got More Talent, while Simon Cowell was unable to attend a day of auditions due to illness. Other than these events, no changes, permanent or temporary, were made to the hosts and the judges for this series. However, the cash prize was reduced to £250,000, following the last series. The series is mainly notable for being the first one to be won by a foreign act, and for an incident that occurred during a performance by a finalist, in which an individual stormed the stage and pelted Cowell with eggs.

The series is most notable for holding auditions in Northern Ireland for the first time, instead of Scotland as had been done since the second series, as well as for the hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly having to stand in for Simon Cowell, after illness forced him to be absent during a day of auditions. It was also the first series in the show's history to have a buzzer used during the live final, and was the first to include the "Golden Buzzer" - a format introduced to the programme, which had begun to appear within the Got Talent franchise since it was first introduced on Germany's Got Talent in 2012.

Sharon Osbourne, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger left after series 10. Former judge Tulisa returned as a guest judge for the final on 13 December due to Mel B being ill. The series also saw the lower age limit decreased from 16 to 14, as it was in series 4 and 5. This was Walsh's final series as a judge before returning in series 13. It was also the only series in which Mel B was a main judge. It was O'Leary's final series as presenter on the main show, as he announced on 27 March 2015 that he was leaving to pursue other projects, before returning in series 13. The change in location allowed for a revamp of the studio used by both the main programme and its sister show, Britain's Got More Talent.

Series Thirteen of Britain's Got Talent, a British talent competition series, began broadcasting in the UK during 2019, from 6 April to 2 June on ITV.
