Torville Ashburn M. Jones (born 6 April 1984), better known by the stage name Tokio Myers, is an English musician and record producer best known for his work as a pianist. He won the reality show Britain's Got Talent in 2017, [1] after which he released many of his independent compositions, including his debut album Our Generation .

Early life

Myers was born Torville Ashburn M. Jones in London on 6 April 1984. He is of West Indian descent. As an 11-year-old student at St George's Catholic School in Maida Vale, he witnessed the murder of the school's Irish headmaster Philip Lawrence at the hands of a local youth branch of the Wo Shing Wo gang, and was ushered to safety inside the building by his music teacher. [2] He later studied with a full scholarship at the Royal College of Music.[ citation needed ]

Career

Myers has previously supported Kanye West, The Police, and Amy Winehouse when he toured with producer Mr Hudson's band Mr Hudson and the Library. Myers also supported Lianne La Havas on her 2016 European Tour. [3]

He used synths and a sample pad as part of his performances, fusing classical roots with dance and pop genres. He was signed to a publishing deal with BMG. [4]

In June 2017, Myers featured in and co-produced a charity single of "Bridge over Troubled Water" to raise money for those impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire, which happened in North Kensington on 14 June 2017.

On 13 October 2017, he released his official debut single, entitled "Bloodstream", which is his studio rendition of his audition performance at Britain's Got Talent. It was also announced as being the lead single from his debut album, entitled Our Generation, which being released in November 2017.

On 5 November 2017, Myers performed as a guest on The X Factor , performing "Angel", and he returned in the final, to duet with Kevin Davy White performing "Fastlove, Pt. 1" by George Michael.

On 4 February 2019, Myers competed in America's Got Talent: The Champions . The first time travelling to the US, his performance consisted of performing a medley of Claude Debussy's "Clair de lune" and Ed Sheeran's "Bloodstream" on the piano and drums. He failed to make it to the final. He returned in the finale as a guest along with Voices of Hope Children's Choir, performing "All We Got" by Robin Schulz.

On 11 September 2019, Myers performed as a guest on America's Got Talent along with Stewart Copeland, performing "Safe and Sound". [5] English singer Grace Davies performed the vocals.

<i>Britains Got Talent</i> Televised British talent competition

Britain's Got Talent is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. Presented by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, it is produced by both Thames and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year in late Spring to early Summer. The show was originally intended for production in 2005, but filming was suspended in the wake of a dispute between ITV and the programme's originally planned host. Following the success of America's Got Talent that year, production resumed, and the programme eventually premiered on 9 June 2007.

Julian Smith is an English saxophonist and music teacher from Birmingham, England. He is also known by his stage name Joolz Gianni. He has made guest appearances alongside artists such as Tony Hadley, Gwen Dickey, Hamish Stuart and Steve Ferrone, and has performed on national television together with Chris Rea, M People, and Dina Carroll. In 2003, he released a solo album, Chilled 2 the Sax, which features Acker Bilk, Dina Carroll, and Ola Onabule. Smith became better known after appearing on the third series of Britain's Got Talent in 2009 and finished in third place behind singer Susan Boyle and winning dance troupe Diversity.

Ronan Parke is an English singer from Poringland, Norfolk, UK who came runner-up in the fifth series of ITV show Britain's Got Talent in 2011 when he was 12 despite being the bookies' favourite to win. Since appearing on the show, he had signed a joint record deal with Sony Music and released a charted self-titled debut album Ronan Parke on 24 October 2011 which reached 22 on the Official Chart. Jai McDowall is a Scottish singer–songwriter, who won the fifth series of Britain's Got Talent in June 2011. As the winner, he received £100,000 and performed at the 2011 Royal Variety Performance. McDowall was signed to Syco Music, a subdivision of record label giant, Sony Music. His debut album Believe was released on 9 December 2011. The lead single "With or Without You" was released the same day.

<i>Britains Got Talent</i> series 7 Season of television series

The seventh series of British talent competition programme Britain's Got Talent was broadcast on ITV, from 13 April to 8 June 2013; because of England's international friendly with the Republic of Ireland that year, the show took a break on 29 May to avoid clashing with live coverage of the match. Because of the work schedule of Stephen Mulhern, host of Britain's Got More Talent, filmed auditions had to be pushed back to mid-January that year, while no guest judge was brought in despite the absence of Simon Cowell for an audition session. Following the previous series, the programme's format was given a minor amendment - the cash prize offered to winners was reduced to £250,000 from this series onwards.

Bars and Melody are a R&B and rap duo consisting of rapper Leondre Devries and singer Charlie Lenehan, who took part in the eighth series of Britain's Got Talent in 2014. During their audition, they were automatically sent into the semifinals of the competition after the head judge, Simon Cowell, pressed the golden buzzer. They ultimately finished in third place in the series. Their first single after the show, "Shining Star", was released on 30 July 2014, accompanied by the acoustic version of their song "Hopeful".

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a British cellist who won the 2016 BBC Young Musician award. He was the first Black musician to win the competition since its launch in 1978. He played at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on the 19th of May, 2018 under the direction of Christopher Warren-Green. Also performing at the wedding was the traditional choir of St. George's Chapel led by James Vivian and a gospel choir conducted by Karen Gibson named, the Kingdom Choir. As of 2021, Kanneh-Mason plays a Matteo Goffriller cello that was made in 1700.

<i>Britains Got Talent</i> series 11 Season of television series

The eleventh series of British talent competition programme Britain's Got Talent was broadcast on ITV, from 15 April to 3 June 2017; because the One Love Manchester concert was to take place on 4 June, the live final was brought forward a day to avoid clashing with it. Following the closure of Fountain Studios the previous year, the live episodes were broadcast from Elstree Studios. The change in location allowed for a revamp of the studio used by both the main programme and its sister show, Britain's Got More Talent.

The X Factor is a British television music competition to find new singing talent. The fourteenth series began airing on ITV on 2 September 2017, presented by Dermot O'Leary. For the first time in seven years, the judging panel remained the same as the previous series, with Nicole Scherzinger, Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh returning. This is the first series not to include companion show The Xtra Factor, after it was cancelled in January 2017. Its replacement is a programme called Xtra Bites presented by Becca Dudley on the ITV Hub. This is also the first series to be sponsored by Just Eat, with the show having been sponsored by TalkTalk since 2009, as well as the second time the show has premiered in September, rather than August, since the first series in 2004. Rak-Su won the competition on 3 December 2017 and they became the second group to win the competition and Simon Cowell became the winning mentor for the fourth time.

Daliso Chaponda is a Zambian-born Malawian stand-up comedian currently residing in the United Kingdom. In 2017, he became a finalist in the variety show Britain's Got Talent, finishing third overall. In 2018, he launched a BBC Radio 4 series Daliso Chaponda: Citizen of Nowhere.

Our Generation is the debut studio album by British classical musician Tokio Myers. It was released on 17 November 2017 through Syco Music and features contributions from Ed Sheeran, J'Danna, Latir, Meave, Vera Hall, Guy Farley, Craigie Dodds, Hugh Fothergill and Alex Hepburn.

She is best known for her original song "Roots", which she performed during her first audition on the fourteenth series of The X Factor in 2017 - where she came runner up, mentored by Sharon Osbourne.

<i>Britains Got Talent</i> series 12 Season of television series

The twelfth series of British talent competition programme Britain's Got Talent was broadcast on ITV, from 14 April to 3 June 2018. For this series, the live episodes were broadcast from Hammersmith Apollo, and presented by Dec Donnelly only; while Ant McPartlin suspended his TV commitments on 19 March 2018, he still appeared in the audition episodes as these had already been filmed in January and February earlier that year. Compared to previous years, this series featured a higher number of participants for the judges to select semi-finalists from, not counting those who received the Golden Buzzer, and saw the return of the Judges' Vote to the show's format.
