The Mortuary Assistant is a 2022 horror game developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP. Set in 1998 in a small town in Connecticut, players control a newly hired assistant at a haunted mortuary.
Players control Rebecca, an assistant at a mortuary who embalms corpses under the watch of her boss, Raymond Delver. [2] Players must engage in the mundane aspects of this job while avoiding demonic possession in the haunted mortuary. This involves jump scares and puzzles. PC Gamer described it as "more or less a walking simulator with some haunted scenery". [3] It is played from a first-person perspective. [4] Players must correctly identify which corpses are possessed, the demon possessing them, and perform the correct exorcism to survive. [5] This process is timed, as indicated by a set of Post-It notes to show the progress of the demon possessing Rebecca. It has multiple endings, [3] and a new ending was added in July 2023. [2] The story is procedurally generated, but the game remembers which vignettes the player has seen and shows different ones in each playthrough. [6]
Brian Clarke developed The Mortuary Assistant himself, based in Connecticut. [3] He had previously worked on massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Clarke's influences included creepy online videos and found footage films, especially Paranormal Activity . A prototype was released in 2020, and Clarke was surprised to find that many people wanted a full simulation of embalming. After researching embalming, he mostly implemented it realistically. Some aspects were streamlined for time, and he used archaic procedures when he thought they made scenes creepier. [6] DreadXP released it on Windows on August 2, 2022, and on Switch on April 20, 2023. [7] A film adaptation was announced in September 2022. DreadXP said it will focus on "the overall narrative" rather than replicating specific gameplay elements or endings. [4]
On release, it became a bestseller on Steam. [8] The Mortuary Assistant received mixed reviews on Metacritic. [9] Despite saying that it is short and "a little rough", GamesRadar said its atmosphere makes up for these shortcomings. [5] They also included it in a list of top horror games. [10] Polygon called it "a little clunky" and said the puzzles can be confusing, but they felt it "delivers a fun set of scares" while being a satisfying simulation. [11] Bloody Disgusting praised the game's content but said they encountered many technical issues. [12]
Tony Todd is an American actor who made his debut as Sgt. Warren in the film Platoon (1986), and portrayed Kurn in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1990–1991) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1996). He achieved stardom for his roles as Ben in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, as the title character in the four films of the Candyman film series (1992–2021) and William Bludworth in the Final Destination franchise (2000–2011). He also starred as Dan in The Man from Earth (2007) and voiced The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Darkseid in the DC Animated Movie Universe, Zoom in The Flash and Venom in the Spider-Man 2 (2023) game.
Phantasm II is a 1988 American science fantasy action-horror film and the sequel to Phantasm (1979). It was written and directed by Don Coscarelli and stars Angus Scrimm, James LeGros and Reggie Bannister. The first film's protagonist, Mike, recently released from a mental institution, recruits Reggie and some new friends in an effort to defeat the villain Tall Man.
Mortuary is a 2005 American zombie horror film directed by Tobe Hooper. It stars Dan Byrd, Alexandra Adi and Denise Crosby. Mortuary was Tobe Hooper's last US-produced film before his death in 2017.
Paranormal Activity is a 2007 American supernatural horror film produced, written, directed, photographed and edited by Oren Peli. It centers on a young couple who are haunted by a supernatural presence inside their home. They then set up a camera to document what is haunting them. The film uses found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later films of the series.

Conarium is a Lovecraftian horror adventure video game, inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness. The game was developed by Turkish game development studio Zoetrope Interactive, published by Dutch indie game publisher Iceberg Interactive, and was first released for Microsoft Windows in June 2017. It was subsequently ported to Linux and macOS in 2018, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019, and the Nintendo Switch in 2021.

One of the best-known examples of the Internet aesthetic of liminal spaces, which depicts usually busy locations as unnaturally empty, the Backrooms was first described as a maze of empty office rooms that can only be entered by "noclipping out of reality".

Puppet Combo is an American independent video game development studio founded by Benedetto "Ben" Cocuzza in 2012 as Pig Farmer Games and based in Brooklyn. Puppet Combo's games, such as Nun Massacre (2018) and the critically acclaimed Murder House (2020), are mostly survival horror games developed solely by Cocuzza and modeled after early PlayStation games and VHS. They are also frequently inspired by 1980s horror films, specifically grindhouse and slasher films. Puppet Combo primarily releases their games through Patreon and Itch.io. Cocuzza launched Torture Star Video, a video game publisher for lo-fi horror games, in 2021.
MADiSON is a first-person horror video game developed and published by the Argentine studio Bloodious Games. It was released on July 8, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The Nintendo Switch version was released on August 26, 2022.
No Players Online is a short horror game released on Itch.io, a website for indie games. It was created by Belgian university students Adam Pype and Ward D'Heer and sound designer Viktor Kraus as part of the Haunted PS1 Jam in November 2019. Initially intended to be a twenty-minute horror game, the developers continued to expand the game into an alternate reality game (ARG) involving cryptic messages and secret passcodes. Players quickly solved the ARG on a dedicated Discord server.
Dread Delusion is a video game under development by independent developer Lovely Hellplace and released for early access by DreadXP in June 2022. Described as an "open world" role-playing game brimming with strange places and dark perils," Dread Delusion encourages player exploration and discovery over the use of combat and grinding.
Sucker for Love: First Date is a parodic dating sim and horror-themed visual novel developed by indie developer Joseph "Akabaka" Hunter, and published by DreadXP. It was released on January 20, 2022, for Windows and December 19, 2022, for Nintendo Switch. The game revolves around a young man who obtains a pink version of the Necronomicon, and begins performing rituals to summon moe anthropomorphic beings from the Cthulhu Mythos, such as Ln'eta, a female version of Cthulhu, sacrificing his body parts and ultimately threatening the world with annihilation. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised its writing, voice acting and artwork, but criticized its short length, glitches, and low emphasis on romance for a dating sim. A sequel further exploring the Cthulhu Mythos, Sucker for Love: Date to Die For, was announced later in 2022.
Chasing Static is a video game released by Headware Games, the studio of independent developer Nathan Hamley. Described as a "psychological horror short story", the game is an exploration-based horror adventure game set in an open-ended Welsh countryside. A demo of the game was released as part of the 2021 horror game compilation Haunted PS1 Demo Disc, curated by independent developer Breogán Hackett. Chasing Static received a mixed reception from reviewers, with praise directed to the game's presentation, writing and atmosphere, and criticism of its short length and ending. In January 2023, the game was ported by publisher Ratalaika Games to consoles.
Lust from Beyond is a 2021 horror game developed by Movie Games Lunarium and published by Movie Games. It is the sequel to Lust for Darkness and, like the previous game, features an erotic horror story influenced by H. P. Lovecraft, H. R. Giger, and Zdzisław Beksiński.
Quantum Error is a 2023 action horror video game developed and published by TeamKill Media. The game was released digitally for the PlayStation 5 on November 3, 2023. It was then released physically for the PS5 in the United States on November 17, and in Europe on December 8.
