The New York Times Simulator is a 2024 satirical news game created by Molleindustria, the alias of Italian game designer Paolo Pedercini. The user plays as the editor of The New York Times , and must draw readership while keeping various interest groups happy. The game criticizes media coverage of the Israel–Hamas war and editorial bias towards certain groups while drawing on themes relating to Noam Chomsky's theory of manufactured consent.
The player takes on the role of the editor-in-chief of The New York Times . As stories appear, they can be placed into one of four slots for articles on the front page of the paper. The goal of the game is to maximize readership with grabbing headlines, while also appealing to the approval ratings of three groups: the police, the rich, and the state of Israel. If at any point the player's approval with one of these factions drops too low, or they run out of readers, they will be "fired" and lose the game. [2] The player has the option to alter potential articles as they appear, possibly reframing them to be more favorable to the groups they are trying to keep happy. For example, one article presented in the game's tutorial is "Israel is starving Gaza's children", while rewriting it produces the headline "Starvation is Stalking Gaza's Children". Using the latter headline will prevent the article from losing the player points with the Israel faction. [3] The article slots above the fold are weighted more heavily and will draw more readership, with the main article slot, in the top left, worth the most. Articles will also lose readership the longer they are in the paper. [4]
The game was released for free on March 29, 2024, on itch.io. [1] According to Pedercini, the game mostly uses real headlines from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal , and other media outlets, and in some cases the in-game headline revisions are edits which actually occurred to those headlines. [1] [4] The game took Pedercini approximately three weeks to complete. [5] Pedercini used data from Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting to create the headlines used in the game, as well as Google News to compare how different outlets covered the same stories. Pedercini also annotated the game's data and released it to the public. [5]
Pedercini says that the game is based on Noam Chomsky's idea of manufactured consent and the propaganda model of communication, as the game reflects Chomsky's theory that the need of news organizations to keep certain groups happy can result in self-censorship. [1] [4] The game was inspired by Pedercini's frustration with media coverage of the Israel–Hamas war. [5] On his inspiration, Pedercini said, "The war crimes and the suffering of civilians are painstakingly documented, a great majority of Americans across party lines disapprove of Israel's conduct, and yet the Western elites united in supporting Netanyahu's government ... I think 'liberal' [publications] like The New York Times or The Washington Post are what these elites read, and they play a big role in manufacturing the consent for this genocide." [5]
Many of the headlines have the option to reword them into passive voice, in order to shift responsibility from the groups the player must keep happy. [5] [6] Critics, as well as Pedercini himself, have compared the game to The Republia Times , a similar news game set in a fictional authoritarian society. [1] [2] [5] [4]
The game has been praised for its commentary, though according to critic Joshua Wolens it is "more an extended joke than it is a challenge", taking only about 10 minutes to beat. [2] Ben Sledge of The Gamer gave the game a positive review, writing, "Put simply, I want my games to say something. The New York Times Simulator says a lot." [6]

Canadian filmmakers Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick expand the analysis of political economy and mass media presented in Manufacturing Consent, a 1988 book Chomsky wrote with Edward S. Herman.
Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a 1988 book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky. It argues that the mass communication media of the U.S. "are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function, by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion", by means of the propaganda model of communication. The title refers to consent of the governed, and derives from the phrase "the manufacture of consent" used by Walter Lippmann in Public Opinion (1922). Manufacturing Consent was honored with the Orwell Award for "outstanding contributions to the critical analysis of public discourse" in 1989.
Avram Noam Chomsky is an American professor and public intellectual known for his work in linguistics, political activism, and social criticism. Sometimes called "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He is a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona and an institute professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The propaganda model is a conceptual model in political economy advanced by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky to explain how propaganda and systemic biases function in corporate mass media. The model seeks to explain how populations are manipulated and how consent for economic, social, and political policies, both foreign and domestic, is "manufactured" in the public mind due to this propaganda. The theory posits that the way in which corporate media is structured creates an inherent conflict of interest and therefore acts as propaganda for anti-democratic elements.
Edward Samuel Herman was an American economist, media scholar and social critic. Herman is known for his media criticism, in particular the propaganda model hypothesis he developed with Noam Chomsky, a frequent co-writer. He held an appointment as Professor Emeritus of finance at the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. He also taught at Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

The film argues that the influence of pro-Israel media watchdog groups, such as CAMERA and Honest Reporting, has led to distorted and pro-Israel media reports. It features Noam Chomsky, Robert Jensen, Hanan Ashrawi, Sam Husseini, and Robert Fisk, among others.

He is also known under the pseudonym Molleindustria, the name of his website. He is known for games such as Queer Power, Faith Fighter and the McDonald's Video Game. The games are often offered as freeware under a Creative Commons NonCommercial license.

On 29 December 2008, the Israeli Supreme Court ordered that journalists be allowed into Gaza whenever the crossings were opened, but the IDF refused to comply.
